Staying Safe Online

Staying Safe Online

In this issue, Filipe learns that everybody needs to think about what they share on their mobile phone and on social media networks.

Filipe and Lucas are at school. They are sat in the back row, messing about and whispering about the teacher. Filipe comments that the teacher makes a funny face when he is concentrating. Lucas whips out his phones and snaps a picture. The teacher hears the clicking sound but can’t identify who made it. When the teacher steps out of the room, they look at the picture and make it into a GIF and start laughing. Lucas shares it with Filipe via a messaging service. They quickly put their phones away when the teacher steps back into the room, but are smirking as they get on with their work.

Later at training... When Filipe arrives, the others are already there. They are looking at Lucas’ phone and laughing at the GIF of the teacher. They all ask Filipe and Lucas to send it to them and immediately start sharing it with their own friends.

Understanding

At the beginning of the story, Lucas and Filipe use their phones to take photos of their teacher and share them with their friends. What problems can this cause for the person who took the photos and for the person in the photos?

Activity 1: In this activity, have a look at each question and decide which is the best answer. Then, think if you have ever shared a photo that you shouldn't have shared?
To share or not to share?

The next day, at school... Filipe and Lucas are in the same teacher’s class as before. Everyone is laughing about the GIF, when the teacher arrives. Suddenly, everyone is quiet. The teacher looks flustered and slightly embarrassed. He drops his pen and everyone bursts out laughing. The teacher tells them off for being disrespectful and says he knows that the person responsible for the GIF is from that class and that he will find out who it is. Filipe and Lucas look at each other but they are confident that no-one will find out.

After class, Filipe is walking down the hallway when he notices that people are looking at him and giggling. Worried, he asks Lucas if he has something on his face. Lucas tells him not to be silly and they go and meet the others at the youth club. Filipe is still complaining about the strange looks when he gets to the youth club. Maria Julia and Clara exchange looks. “Well, you did write that strange status, Filipe and post that...interesting photo...of yourself”. “What are you talking about?”. Filipe gets out his phone and checks his social network page. Someone has written an offensive status and posted a picture of him.

The gang hang out of the youth club for a while, but Filipe still feels self-conscious and like everyone is staring at him. Some people are, but not everyone. Soon, the others start to tire of him and tell him that he is overreacting. Filipe decides to go home. On his way out, he passes Raphael and his group of friends. They are looking at a new poster. Raphael looks up at Filipe and says “you should pay attention to tip 6, chicken-boy” and waves his mobile phone at him, taunting him. Filipe realises Raphael must have hacked his social network, but he has no proof. Filipe looks at the poster.

Grammar

During the story, Filipe is sure that someone went onto his Facebook page, and he is sure that he knows who it was. He uses the phrase 'must have been' to show this:

"Someone must have been on my Facebook page!"

"It must have been Rafael"

We use the structure must + have + past participle to show that we are sure about something that happened in the past. We can change must to could/may/might to say that we are less sure, or to can't if we are sure that something didn't happen.

Have a go at the activity below to practise more of these types of sentence. If you want to know more, check out the Grammar Pages on our Learn English website.

Activity 2: In this activity, take a look at some sentences and decide which modal verb you should use: must, might, can't or could?
Can you put the modal verb in the right sentence?

The poster has 8 tips for staying safe online. Tip 1: Be nice to people online Tip 2: Take care with what you share Tip 3: Keep personal information private Tip 4: Check your privacy settings

Tip 5:Know how to report posts. Tip 6: Keep your passwords safe. Tip 7: Never meet anyone in person you’ve only met online. Tip 8: If you see anything online that you don’t like tell someone you trust.

Filipe feels embarrassed about being exposed online and realises that his teacher must have felt the same way. The following day, he owns up to to making the GIF and apologises to the teacher. The teacher accepts his apology but gives him extra work to do. Later at practice, the others ask Filipe if he is feeling better. He says that he is but he’s learnt his lesson and has changed all his passwords. The gang are relieved and Bruno invites him to look at something on his phone. Filipe looks wary, but Bruno says “don’t worry; it’s just a video of a skateboarding rabbit!”

Well, because it is not very courteous, and they might not like it very much. This could spoil your relations with them. A better idea is to always ask them if you could tag them before you post any of their picture. Plus you should be a positive person, by doing such things you only expose yourself and your mentality. But it is always a good idea to at least know about how to do these things, this will discourage people from hacking your account, as they would know that you are dangerous!

You should always deactivate your account when you do not intend to use it for a long time. and keep changing your passwords, know how to report issues.By the way, I have delete my fb account, so I shouldn't talk like a pro! ;);)

Some countries try to address those issues by introducing new laws. There are some examples across the globe. Is there any social media-related regulation in the UK, by the way?

Some people may just follow the rule 'Everything which is not forbidden is allowed'. There are two options: either FB or any other social media introduces and then enforces a new policy, or it's up to the users to decide whether they are ready to take the risks of sharing other people's photos or not.
