Clara and friends - Clara is leaving the youth centre, waving good bye to her friends who look on.

The Youth Council

The Youth Council

This story is about Clara. This week, Orlando the coach asks Clara to represent Morro Verde at the Football Association's Youth Council.
Clara has just finished football practice with her friends. As she’s leaving the pitch, the coach asks her to hold back because he wants to speak to her. The coach gives Rini a letter from the national sports youth council. It’s an invitation to represent Morro Verde at the city’s youth sports council. The coach asks her to talk to her friends about the issues she should bring up. Her friends laugh – Why would you want to represent Morro Verde? What a waste of time!

Vocabulary: In this activity, you have to match the words from the comic with the descriptions
Match the words to the descriptions
When she arrives at the council meeting rooms (attached to a hotel in the city centre), she looks for information. There’s a display with an agenda and list of participants. There are also name badges. She stands behind a couple of kids from rich neighbourhoods who are looking at the information and overhears one of them, (Rita) saying: “I can’t believe they’ve invited someone from Morro Verde… That place is a dump.” Clara is embarrassed and puts her name badge in her bag.

She makes friends with the other representatives and gets on well with most of them. The discussion is good and she participates fully. She goes back to Morro Verde and tells her friends all about it (except for the part about lying about where she’s from) and how fantastic it was. She tells her friends that next week she will be taking part in a debate at the council.

Activity 2: In this activity, you have to read statements about the story so far and decide if they are true or false.
True or false?
At the youth sports council: The council is talking about a citywide sports tournament. Clara is one of six representatives at the youth sports council - each representing an area of the city. The representatives discuss where the tournament should be held in front of an audience of senior council members and other interested parties. Rita stands up and states that the tournament should be held at her school because they have the best facilities and pitches. We can’t risk our lives by going to Morro Verde - we’ll all be mugged the moment we set foot there!

Clara stands up. She states that each area should hold matches. All areas should have this opportunity. Kids from poorer areas can’t afford to cross the city - it takes time and money. Other representatives agree and the audience applauds. Rita looks angry.

Activity 3: This activity is about expressions with the very 'get'. You have to drag the verbs into the correct sentences so that they match the descriptions.
Phrases with 'get'
Her team is playing in the youth tournament. Their first match is against a team from one of the richest neighbourhoods in the city. As soon as the team arrives, she spots the Rita. Rita sees her and laughs and tells her that she will be thrown off the Youth Council when they find out she lied.

Morro Verde lose the match. Clara confesses to her coach. Her coach tells her it’s OK. They go together to visit the council to explain.

The council are very understanding and apologise for making her feel uncomfortable. They praise her, saying they value her presence in the council and ask her to stay. Rita is told off the by the Council for not welcoming Clara and not showing the spirit of football. Clara finds her name badge and puts it on.

Really good story. I think it was really well structured. It has a good plot twist at the end with Rita being told off. (Murilo)

They learn in poor quality, play in dangerous, eat unsafe food. They swear uncontrolled. They smoke early....Not always, but people think about them in negative.

Thanks for your answers, I agree with a lot of what you say. In question 7, you're right she is upset because she lied and leaving the youth council would be a consequence of this, so I would say that is the closest of the three options. What do you think?
