This Week: Big Football Quiz

Rich: Hello and welcome to This Week on Premier Skills English. My name’s Rich.

Jack: And my name’s Jack and we’re here to talk about football and help you with your English.

Rich: This week we’re going to challenge your football knowledge in our big football quiz.

Jack: That’s right. We’ve decided that every month throughout the season we’re going to do a quiz. This is the quiz for July.

Rich: In this quiz, you have to guess the Premier League player, manager, club, stadium or badge.

Jack: We thought it’d be a fun, extra thing to do every month. In our podcasts, we focus on language but the focus in these quizzes is football but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn lots of new words and phrases as you listen.

Rich: You might be listening on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or another podcast platform but if you listen to us on the Premier Skills English website you’ll also find the transcript so you can read and listen at the same time and there are free activities to help you understand.

Football Phrase

Jack: Before you listen to our big football quiz we want to give you the answer to last week’s football phrase and congratulate those of you who got the right answer.

Rich: StevenNguyen from Vietnam was the first with the right answer on the website last week so well done to you!

Jack: The correct answer was a soft penalty so well done to Kiran Raj K S who was first on YouTube and well done to HSN and Muhamed Beckham from Turkey, Marco Zapien from Mexico who also got the right answer. Let’s hear last week’s football phrase once again:

Rich: Last week’s football phrase was a soft penalty. This is when a player goes down in the box very easily and there is minimal contact between the attacker and the defender but the referee still points to the spot. Maybe it should have been given or maybe not and commentators may describe the award as a soft penalty.

Jack: At the end of the show we’ll have a new football phrase for you. Now it’s time to listen to our big football quiz. Are you ready?

Quiz

Rich: You’re listening to Radio UK and now it’s time for our big football quiz.

Jack: That’s right listeners. It’s time for our monthly football quiz. What’s going to happen in this quiz, Rich?

Rich: Well, Jack. We want our listeners to guess what we are talking about.

Jack: And what will we be talking about?

Rich: We will be talking about Premier League clubs, players, managers, stadiums and badges.

Jack: And when our listeners know the answers or want to make a guess. What do they do then?

Rich: Well, it’s just for fun but if you want to know the answers you’ll find the quiz on the Premier Skills English website. This quiz is called the big football quiz - July. You’ll find all the answers there!

Jack: Let’s crack on! Here’s our big football quiz on Radio UK.

QUESTION 1

Rich: Here’s question number one. We want you to name the Premier League club I’m talking about. This club has been around for a long time and is one of the oldest in the professional game and is actually older than their more successful, in terms of trophies won, city rivals. This club is managed by a Spaniard who has won the Champions League but hasn’t won it for this club.

Jack: I like it. There are two possibilities I think but only one that is correct.

QUESTION 2

Jack: Here’s question two. I’m going to describe a club badge and you have to tell me the club. While I describe the badge, try looking at the Premier Skills English homepage where you will see all twenty club badges. Ok, so this badge has a white rose - a type of flower - on it which is a symbol of where this club is based. The badge is in the shape of a shield and it has the initials LUFC running vertically down the badge.

Rich: That last bit probably gives the answer away, Jack.

QUESTION 3

Rich: Here’s question three. I’m describing a Premier League stadium but which one is it? This stadium is the oldest in the Premier League that has continuously been used for football since it was built. It has one of the smallest capacities in the division but this team is one of the best-supported teams per capita in the country. The town where it is based only has 70,000 people but they usually get over 20,000 at each Premier League match they play.

Jack: I think I have it. A small town in Lancashire.

QUESTION 4

Jack: Question 4. I’m describing a Premier League player. This player is a three-time Premier League Champion for his current club. He is very skilful and has lots of pace. In 2021, he was made a Member of the British Empire by the Queen for services to racial equality in sport.

Rich: And he plays in Manchester, right. I’ve got it.

QUESTION 5

Rich: Question 5. I’m describing a Premier League manager. After guiding one club to the Premier League he led this team full of compatriots from his own country to successive top-half Premier League finishes. This summer, however, he departed for pastures new and has taken over from a fellow Portuguese manager.

Jack: He’s done well and I expect him to continue doing well this season.

QUESTION 6

Jack: Let’s move on to the second half of our football quiz. Here’s question 6. I’m describing a Premier League club. The club is based in the North East of England and the club’s most famous player must be the Premier League’s all-time top scorer. People from this part of the world are known as Geordies and the Premier League’s all-time top scorer is a Geordie, too.

Rich: One of the best atmospheres in the Premier League if you ask me.

QUESTION 7

Rich: Here’s question seven. I’m going to describe a club badge and you have to tell me the club. While I describe the badge, try looking at the Premier Skills English homepage where you will see all twenty club badges. OK, so this badge has a bird on it but it’s not a bird of prey. It’s a bird that might steal your fish and chips at the seaside where this team plays its home matches.

Jack: A great place to go for the weekend.

QUESTION 8

Jack: Here’s question eight. I’m describing a Premier League stadium but which one is it? This stadium isn’t new and the clue to that is in its name. Its nickname is the theatre of dreams and it’s the biggest club stadium in the UK.

Rich: I’ve been but only as an away fan and it didn’t feel like the theatre of dreams to me!

QUESTION 9

Rich: Question 9. I’m describing a Premier League player. This player was at the heart of a Premier League-winning defence last season and I don’t think he’s been given the credit he deserves despite being named as the Premier League’s Player of the season. To arrive at a club and to fit in straight away like he’s been there for years. Magnificent.

Jack: He must have been good because not many defenders win that award.

QUESTION 10

Jack: Question 10. I’m describing a Premier League manager. He’s German and has made a stunning impact on a club that he has only been managing for a short time. He took over and took his club up the league table and made the team extremely hard to beat as Manchester City found out to their cost at the end of last season.

Rich: Yes, and I fancy this team to do very, very well this season, too.

Jack: Thanks for listening to our big football quiz on Radio UK.

Football Phrase

Jack: OK, our football phrase. If you’ve not listened to the podcast before, every week we set our listeners a challenge. We explain a football phrase or word and you have to guess what it is.

Rich: You will hear this football phrase in every podcast we release this week so you have a few chances to think and guess our football phrase.

Jack: When you know the answer, go to the podcast page on the Premier Skills English website, Apple Podcasts or YouTube and write the word or phrase in the comments. If you’re correct we’ll announce your name on next week’s podcast.

Rich: So what is this week’s football phrase, Jack?

Jack: This week’s football phrase is ** *** *****. We use this phrase to say that we are in the same place as something that is happening. We didn’t watch the match on TV, we saw the players and watched the match ** *** *****. It’s a more idiomatic way of saying that you were at the stadium watching the match live.

Rich: Thanks to HSN from Turkey for this football phrase. If you have a football phrase that you would like us to use in the podcast, just get in touch and let us know.

Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for now but we will be back later this week on Apple Podcasts and Spotify with the Premier Skills English podcast. .

Rich: Don’t forget to write your guesses in the comments below. If you get it right, we’ll announce your name on next week’s podcast and live on YouTube.

Jack: Before we finish we just wanted to say that we hope you found this lesson useful and we hope all of you stay fit and healthy.

Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

Hi Rich! I'm confused with the definition. It's like gathering at the same place. I perceived that it's not an individual activity-:) Stay fit and healthy.
P.S. We have a phrase close to "in the flesh"

Hi HSN,

In the flesh means to see someone or something live rather than on TV. Here's an example:

Many years ago, I met the ex-football player, Ferenc Puskas in the flesh. I was working as an English teacher in Budapest twenty years ago and a friend invited me to a Ferencvaros match. We sat in an executive box (very lucky, I know) and at half-time, there was free food and drink I got to meet Ferenc Puskas in the flesh. He was meeting and greeting people.

Hope that helps,

Rich - The Premier Skills English Team

Hi Rich!
I'd like suggest a football phrase. I think it's called "Marking" in English. Let me describe situation; A shot directed to the goal but doesn't go into net.The ball usually hit the post or go over it. In this position we say the player failed to stick the goal. In Turkish "Futbolcu (the player) Kaleyi (the goal) tutturamadı (failed) "
Stay fit and healthy.
