Introduction

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our Monday round-up section on Premier Skills English.

Jack: Hi there. I’m Jack. Every Monday, we discuss last weekend’s action, the best players, the best matches, Fantasy Football, and make some predictions for next weekend.

Rich: We want you to practise your English and interact with Premier League fans from around the world in our comments section.

Jack: You can do this on the Premier Skills English website or the Premier Skills-British Council Facebook page - if that’s where you are listening to us.

Rich: There were some great matches in Matchweek 8 so let’s get on with this week’s round up!

Headlines

Rich: From zeroes to heroes as Palace stun the Champions.

Jack: With no goals and no points from their first seven matches of the season, Crystal Palace stunned Chelsea by beating the Champions 2-1. An own goal got Palace’s first, Tiemoue Bakayoko got the equaliser for Chelsea but Wilfried Zaha got the winner for Palace!

Rich: City are in seventh heaven!

Jack: Manchester City smashed Stoke City on Saturday. City raced into a 3-0 lead, Stoke threatened a comeback when they pulled it back to 3-2 but City then scored another four goals to win 7-2. Pep Guardiola described it as the best performance since he became CIty manager.

Rich: Arsenal get stung by the Hornets!

Jack: Watford are up to fourth in the Premier League after beating Arsenal 2-1. Everything was looking good for Arsenal when Per Mertesacker gave them a first half lead, but a controversial penalty gave Watford the chance to equalise. Then, in the third minute of injury time, Tom Cleverley scored the winner to send the Watford fans home happy.

Vocabulary Alert!

Rich: Tiemoue Bakayoko got the equaliser for Chelsea … a penalty gave Watford the chance to equalise. Equalise? Equaliser? What does this mean?

Jack: The equaliser is the goal that is scored to make the scores level in the match. For example, Palace were winning 1-0 then Bakayoko scored. He scored the equaliser. You can use it as a noun or a verb. Watford equalised against Arsenal with a controversial penalty.

Rich: Mmm … yes I wasn’t sure if it was a penalty or not. Troy Deeney scored the equaliser for Watford. After the match, he said that it was going to be a really bad weekend because his son is an Arsenal fan!

Matchweek Awards

Rich: Right, every Monday, we give out three matchweek awards. Player of the Week, Team of the Week and Match of the Week.

Jack: In the comments section, you need to tell us if you agree with our choices …

Rich: Last week, not all of you agreed with our choices.

Jack: For example, Milos from Serbia and Haruyuki from Japan both said we shouldn’t have chosen Marouane Fellaini as Player of the Week for Matchweek 7.

Rich: They both thought it should have been Harry Kane. He did have a great Matchweek 7.

Jack: And that’s why we have the comments section. To agree or disagree with our choices.

Rich: OK, let’s start with the Player of the Week. There are lots of players to choose from. Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, Tom Cleverley, Wilfried Zaha, David De Gea, Manolo Gabbiadini … They all had great matchweeks.

Jack: But we can only choose one and our Player of the Week this week is Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha!

Rich: He had a great match against Chelsea. He scored the winner and he could be the player to turn around Palace’s season.

Jack: Yes, it was his first match back after injury. Palace will want to keep him fit.

Rich: Our next award is for Team of the Week. There were good wins for Manchester City, Watford, Swansea, Palace and Spurs.

Jack: But our Team of the Week has to be Manchester City. Seven goals and some sensational play from Pep Guardiola’s men.

Rich: Our third award is for Match of the Week. Unfortunately, it isn’t Liverpool v Manchester Utd that was a disappointing goalless draw.

Jack: Our Match of the Week is Palace vs Chelsea. For me, that’s what the Premier League is all about - anyone can beat anyone on their day.

Rich: No goals and no points and then they go and beat the Champions. I agree, it was brilliant.

Fantasy Football

Rich: What’s been happening in fantasy football this week, Jack?.

Jack: The top scoring player so far in matchweek 8 is Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling with 15 points. No surprise that it was a City player!

Rich: The Premier Skills team got 56 points and are in fourth place!

Jack: Who’s this week’s Fantasy Premier Skills team of the week?

Rich: The Premier Skills Fantasy Premier League Team of the Week for Matchweek 8 is Xhaca Laca Boom Boom managed by Udhbhav Gupta, an Arsenal fan from India.

Jack: Udhbav has scored 68 points so far with the Leicester - West Brom match still to play. Well done to you!

Rich: After Matchweek eight, the leader of the Premier Skills League is still FC Tozo managed by Dimitar Tanevski , a Manchester Utd fan from Macedonia. Well done to you too!

Matchweek Prediction

Jack: Last week’s prediction was Liverpool v Manchester Utd. It finished in a nil nil draw. Rich thought Liverpool would win but a few of our listeners made better predictions.

Rich: Well done to Haruyuki from Japan, Elghoul from Algeria and Sabonaleg from Ukraine who all predicted a draw.

Jack: Which match are you going to predict this weekend,Rich?

Rich: I’m going to go for another Liverpool match - sorry. In Matchweek 8 Liverpool go to Wembley Stadium to play Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs are up to third in the Premier League and got their first Premier League win at Wembley last weekend. Liverpool are not on a good run of form although they looked the most likely team to win against Manchester Utd last week. Both teams have Champions League matches in midweek - Liverpool go to Slovenia to play Maribor and Spurs are in Spain playing Real Madrid. Substitutes could be important in this match but as my predictions have been really bad this season I’m going to go with a Spurs win. Final score: Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool

Jack: I think Spurs will win too but not because of your reverse psychology, because they are in better form! Final score: Spurs 2-0 Liverpool.

Rich: We’ll see … we want you to make your predictions at the bottom of the page on the website. Are you a good predictor?

Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for. I hope you have enjoyed this Monday round-up.
Don’t forget to join the discussion at the bottom of this page.

Rich: Also, if you want to improve your English, take a look at our weekly podcast. There is a link on the side of this page.

Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

The Big Match

Tottenham v Liverpool

Rich's prediction this week is the match between Tottenham and Liverpool. Rich thinks that it will be a 2-1 win for Spurs and Jack agrees that Tottenham will be too strong for the Reds. Have a listen to what Rich and Jack say and then make your prediction at the bottom of the page.

Last week Rich got it wrong again! He predicted a 2-1 win for Liverpool against Manchester Utd, but it finished nil-nil. Some of our listeners have better prediction skills than Rich. Well done to:

  • Elghoul from Algeria
  • Sabanoleg from Ukraine
  • Haruyuki from Japan

Liverpool and Manchester Utd drew nil-nil. United's keeper, David De Gea, had a good game.

City was absolutely the best team in last Matchweek but this time I think that this "trophy" will take Tottenham and they will win against Live 3:1. Kane will scores 2 Times ;)

1- Yes, absolutely, because after eitgh match lost is too dificult to follow trying the victory.

2- I´m agree again with their choice. Guardiola´s tema play incredibly better than the rest. In fact,I´ve been watching them in live againts Napoli and nowadays for me they are the best team in Europe.

3- Great choice again, because it was the surprise of the weekend.

4- Both will play this match hopened. Both have got good results in their respective games in Europe. For me, it´s a bit unpredictable.

5- I´m from Pamplona (Spain) and obviously i support my local team which is Osasuna. But I was living in Liverpool now and i hope that they win their game on Sunday. I´m sure it will be amazing!

Correct me

Again the Citizens are involved in the biggest result of the season so far, a swashbuckling Man City never seem to stop scoring!

And the Gunners losing away at Wattford, I bet Liubmyr enjoyed that game a lot.

I watched Liverpool-Man Utd game and I was so disappointed that the Reds shared the points with the Red Devils. That wasn't a fair result because Man Utd didn't play as Liverpool did. Anyway, that's football, the unfair game.

I'm quite surprised, because the Eagles hadn't won in seven consecutive PL games before the last fixture, and when they won, they did it over the champions. How strange! I think they began to find some form and that win over Chelsea will definintely boost their confidence. In my opinion, they really deserve to be team of the week.

This week the prediction is gona be a daunting task for me, because Spurs are in a great form these days. They are undefeatable! It's a difficult looking away match for the Reds, I'm a little bit buzzled, Maybe a one all draw!

Hi teacher Rich, you've got to believe in th Reds, why don't you take that losing spirit out of you. I can't believe you went for a Liverpool defeat! You've got 48 hours to change your mind, points aren't that important...(only joking)

I can't agree with Jack and Rich and with their choice Wilfried Zaha as the POTW. I think Kevin De Bryune brought more favour for Manchester City than Zaha, but he is quite deserves this award.
Of course, i agree with Jack and Rich in their choice Manchester City as the TOTW. Manchester City show a beatufiul match, the victory was well-deserved.

1. If I had to choose the best player I would go for Jesus.

2. I totally agree with the commentators for the best eighteth week team and I might add its match in the awards.

3. A draw between Liverpool and the Spurs seems quite obvious.

I agree with your Matchweek Awards.
Zaha helped Crystal Palace seal a great victory against Chelsea and get confident.
Spurs are really in form this season.
But I hope Liverpool win with final score 1-0.
That’s because Spurs had very tough match against R. Madrid in midweek.
