Introduction

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our Monday round-up section on Premier Skills English.

Jack: Hi there. I’m Jack. Every Monday, we discuss last weekend’s action, the best players, the best matches, Fantasy Football, and make some predictions for next weekend.

Rich: We want you to practise your English and interact with Premier League fans from around the world in our comments section.

Jack: You can do this on the Premier Skills English website or the Premier Skills-British Council Facebook page - if that’s where you are listening to us.

Rich: There were some great matches in Matchweek 7 so let’s get on with this week’s round up!

Headlines

Rich: De Bruyne stunner gives City the win in top of the table clash.

Jack: Manchester City won all three points with a 1-0 win away to Chelsea. It needed a magnificent goal from Kevin De Bruyne to separate the two teams. City stay at the top of the Premier League table while Chelsea slip to fourth.

Rich: United keep pace with City at the top.

Jack: Manchester Utd are still level on points with City after beating bottom club, Crystal Palace 4-0 at Old Trafford. Juan Mata, Romelu Lukaku and a double from Marouane Fellaini was enough to beat Palace who have now played seven matches and are yet to win a point or score a goal.

Rich: Tottenham tear into the Terriers.

Jack: Tottenham matched Utd’s 4-0 win with victory at Huddersfield. Harry Kane got two of the goals for Spurs and scored a total of 13 goals in September - a personal record for him. Before this match Huddersfield had only conceded three goals all season!

Definition Alert!

Rich:  Huddersfield had only conceded three goals all season. Conceded? What does this mean?

Jack: In football, concede is a verb that is used a lot. It’s kind of the opposite of score. You score goals at one end of the pitch and you concede goals at the other.

Rich: You might hear in a match report: Swansea conceded a last minute goal to West Ham or Palace conceded an early goal in their match against United.

Jack: If you look at the full Premier League table, you can see the points that each team has got, how many games they have won, lost and drawn. It also says how many goals they have scored, sometimes this says for, and it says how many goals they have conceded, sometimes this says against.

Rich: How many times did Palace and Huddersfield concede last weekend?

Jack: Four times.

Matchweek Awards

Rich: Right, every Monday, we give out three matchweek awards. Player of the Week, Team of the Week and Match of the Week.

Jack: In the comments section, you need to tell us if you agree with our choices …

Rich: Last week, not all of you agreed with our choices.

Jack: For example, Khaldoun83 from Algeria thought that Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne should have been last week’s Player of the Week instead of Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata.

Rich: De Bruyne had a great Matchweek 6 and he played brilliantly in Matchweek 7 too.

Jack: Sh! OK, let’s Let’s start with the Player of the Week. There are lots of players to choose from. As you just mentioned, Kevin De Bruyne was great against Chelsea, but other contenders include Watford’s Richarlison who was brilliant as Watford came from behind to draw with West Brom, Harry Kane had a brilliant week and Philippe Coutinho scored another free kick.

Rich: But our Player of the Week this week is Manchester Utd’s Marouane Fellaini.

Jack: Two goals for the big Belgian. He gives United another option and the United fans have started chanting his name which must fill him with confidence.

Rich: Our next award is for Team of the Week. There were good wins for Manchester City and United, Stoke, West Ham, Arsenal and Burnley.

Jack: But our Team of the Week this week is Tottenham Hotspur. 4-0 away from home against a team that had only conceded three goals all season. A great achievement.

Rich: yes Spurs are getting stronger. Our third and final award is for the Match of the Week. The award goes to West Brom v Watford.

Jack: The two teams shared four goals with an injury-time equaliser for Watford. A great game and Watford’s Brazilian, Richarlison looks like a player to keep an eye on.

Fantasy Football

Rich: What’s been happening in fantasy football this week, Jack?.

Jack: The top scoring players last week were Marouane Fellaini and Tottenham’s Ben Davies with 16 points.

Rich: The Premier Skills team got 70 points and have moved up to third place!

Jack: Who’s this week’s Fantasy Premier Skills team of the week?

Rich: The Premier Skills Fantasy Premier League Team of the Week for Matchweek 7 was Andrei Sinelschikov from Russia. His team Los Guerreros scored 91 points.

Jack: After Matchweek seven, the leader of the Premier Skills League is FC Tozo managed by Dimitar Tanevski , a Manchester Utd fan from Macedonia. Well done to you too!

Matchweek Prediction

Jack: Last week’s prediction was Chelsea v Manchester City. You thought Chelsea would win, Rich. But, City won 1-0. I think that’s four in a row you’ve got wrong.

Rich: Yes, I’m not doing that well. But, some of our listeners are much better predictors. Well done to Mon from Egypt, Ahmed Adam from Sudan, Sabonoleg from Ukraine, Haruyuki from Japan, Milos from Serbia and Khaldoun83 from Algeria. All of you predicted a City win.

Jack: Which match are you going to predict this weekend?

Rich: There are no Premier League matches this weekend because of the international break so my Matchweek eight prediction is for the 14th of October.

Jack: And which match is it?

Rich: It’s my team Liverpool against Manchester Utd. A massive match. Liverpool are finding it difficult to score goals at the moment. They create lots of chances but just can’t finish teams off. Manchester Utd are not having the same problem and are scoring goals for fun at the moment. Liverpool against United is always a special match with a special atmosphere and I think the Reds will rise to the occasion and beat United. Final score: Liverpool 2 -1 Manchester Utd.

Jack: You have to support your team, Rich but I’m going for an away win.

Rich: We’ll see … we want you to make your predictions at the bottom of the page on the website. Are you a good predictor?

Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for. I hope you have enjoyed this Monday round-up. Don’t forget to join the discussion at the bottom of this page.

Rich: Also, if you want to improve your English, take a look at our weekly podcast. There is a link on the side of this page.

Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

We think that United will win 2-1 because they are still in good dispostion and there is the amazing Romelu Lukaku, the Beast, and the defence block of ManU looks incredible. Looking at last matches of Liverpool and United, it's very possible that ther is gonna be a draw but  we still believe that Lukaku will score in the last minutes of the match and say "Goodbye" to the fans on Anfield Road.

Correct me

Spurs are doing really well at the moment in both the PL and the CL. They are good choice for the team of the week award.

In-contrasting-form Liverpool at home to in-form Man United? Now, this is not an easy game to predict, it's a six pointer! Despite The Reds dominating possession in their games, but they suffer a lot to find the back of the net. I'm almost sure that Morinho is going to park the bus to make it even more difficult espcially, with Man Utd's solid defence. However, I think this could be the game to put the Reds back on track since it's a classical game against the arch-rivals. One nill to Liverpool. Come on you Reds!

Hi Ahmed Adam

Your writing is really accurate as always. I like your 'in-contrasting-form'. Not technically correct, but an acceptable creative use of language.

Here's a correction: Despite The Reds dominating possession in their games, but they suffer a lot to find the back of the net.

You have used two conjunctions in this sentence. The easiest correction would be to drop the but. However, even that's not quite right. It's an interesting mistake because it shows how difficult it can be to match forms across complex sentences. The first part is fine, but the second part should be: they have been having problems finding the back of the net - or: they have been suffering from problems scoring goals.

Another suggestion: we say 'almost certain' a lot, but for some reason 'almost sure' sounds wrong.

The rest is great (spelling 'nil'). Park the bus - put the Reds back on track - fantastic!

Thanks

Jack

Thanks for saying that although it sounds accetable to you, it might sound strange to others. That was a silly mistake to make using "despite" and "but" at the same time! Your corrections are always special. Please keep them coming

1. Fellaini was great. It is amazing how a player who was near leaving the team this season became one of the best for Man. Thanks to his manager Mourinho.

2. Spurs were brilliant and I was happy to see them not only in the highlights but also on-live.

3. To be sincere I have got no idea about the choised match.

4. I think a draw is the worst thing for Man to happen.

I agree that Tottenham is the team of the week.
I think Harry Kane is better than Fellaini as the player of the week, because he matches La Liga goal machines Messi and Ronaldo for scoring 13 goals in a month.
He didn't take any goals in August though.

My prediction is 2-2 draw between United and Liverpool.

1-For the player of the week I don't agree again because I consider that Kevin De Bryne was the best in the week 6, I think we should not chose the player who scored a lot of goals, instead some players like the Belgian are creating chances for their teammate to score goals.

2- For the team of the week and match of the week I totally agree with you guys.

3- I think that Liverpool will beat Manchester Utd 2-0.
