Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to Premier Skills English - Premier Vocabulary.

Jack: Hi there! I’m Jack. We’re here to help you with your football English. Premier Vocabulary is a mini-podcast for you to learn football English one word at a time.

Rich: We have three different levels for you: easy, medium and hard.

Jack: This episode is easy so we’re looking at common football words and phrases; things you use and need to know to play the game.

Rich: The word we are looking at in this episode is: kit.

Jack: The word kit is usually used to describe a set of something.

Rich: Let’s start with our main football example and then we’ll look at some other types of kit.

Jack: When we’re talking about football and we use the word kit we’re nearly always talking about what we wear to play football.

Rich: A football kit is the set of clothes we wear to play football. A football kit consists of the football shirt, shorts and socks.

Jack: We talk about home kits and away kits and sometimes even third kits.

Rich: A home kit is what a team wears when they play at home and an away kit is what a team wears when they are playing matches away from home.

Jack: And a third kit?

Rich: This is what a team wear when their away kit and home kit clash with their opponents home kit.

Jack: A kit clash is when two teams’ kits are very similar to each other.

Rich: You can’t have this. The players wouldn’t know who to pass to.

Jack: That’s why we have third kits. Manchester City’s is really cool - a paisley shirt.

Rich: I’m not so sure. It might look good for a night out but not on a football pitch.

Jack: Have a look at the Manchester City players in their paisley shirts on the main page for this podcast and tell us if you like this kit.

Rich: OK, we’ve been talking about football kits but there are many other types of kit.

Jack: Remember kit is usually used for a set of something. You can get all kinds of sports kits: tennis kit, cricket kit, rugby kit.

Rich: When we talk about football kit we are usually just referring to clothes but for other sports, we might be talking about clothes and equipment.

Jack: You need a lot of kit for cricket. Clothes, helmet, pads, and of course a bat.

Rich: We also talk about kits when we talk about music. I think the most common type of kit in music is a drum kit.

Jack: A drum kit is a set of drums.

Rich: We also talk about a toolkit or a first-aid kit. Again this would be a set of tools or medicine and bandages and things - usually in a box.

Jack: Kit is also used to describe a set of things you need to put together.

Rich: You might enjoy putting together model aeroplanes, boats or cars from a kit or maybe you’ve bought a drone kit and made your own drone.

Jack: We talk about it more generally, too. What kind of kit might you need before going camping for example?

Rich: We might also talk about kit for things someone needs for a specific purpose. Doctors, nurses, soldiers and police officers all carry kit with them.

Jack: There is the final whistle!

Rich: We’ll be back soon with more Premier Vocabulary from Premier Skills English.

Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

As I know, the badges of the teams is always in front of the kits. But at the " Cleverly designed " this kit, it was on the back of the player's neck. Therefore Turkish club Fenerbahçe FC. young player Mohammed should have turned his head three hundred and sixty (360) degrees to find and kiss it after scoring-:)

My favourites are always those simple ones: less sponsors and more exposition to the team's banner. Like Leeds United kits.
My favourite ever football kit was 1990's Bragantino's home kits. The "Carijó" kit.

Describe your favourite team's football kit. What's your favourite ever football kit?
I don’t prefer colourful kit. Black and white is my favourite colours. It can be combined like white shirt without stripes, black shorts and white socks.
Some teams play with pink colour shirt or a shirt with wide stripe from opposite shoulder to waistline. It looks funny.

The last season Watford had a quite remarkable Adidas "half and half" yellow-black shirt. I really liked it, because it looked fresh. This season Watford changed supplier to Kelme, but the new shirt with sunbeam pattern looks 'psychedelic' and strange to me.
And its a pity for me that in 2016 Premier League allowed more sponsor branding on the kit, i.e. on the sleeves. I prefer a minimalistic design with the fewer ad as possible.

My favourite ever kit is of Dinamo Kiev of 70-80-90-ies with the blue "Д" (D) on a white jersey. I used to have and wear it in my childhood. I was even a young Dinamovite taking wrestling lessons on the Dinamo sports complex at the age of 12.

Well , I like lots of kits that are either stylish or have good memories.
My favourite three are the umbro red home kit of Manchester United season 1998/99 , England umbro white kit in World Cup 1998 and Romania's adidas classic yellow kit which was worn in World Cup 1994.

My favourite team's football kit has to be back in 1998/99 season which was the home kit of Manchester United , a red umbro kit sponsored by SHARP with umbro brand mascot striped on the sleeves of the shirt with standard old Premier League sleeve patches. It looked brilliant on players and on me too especially the one with long sleeves.

Thanks, Muhammad, I need to explain: this T-shirt is not Beckham's himself but with #7 and his surname on it. :-)
