PFA Premier League Team of the Year
On Sunday the 26th of April, the PFA awards ceremony took place in London. Most of the best players from the Premier League were there, including all the nominees for the Player of the Year award; Eden Hazard, Harry Kane, Alexis Sanchez, David De Gea, Phillipe Coutinho and Diego Costa. Who won what? and which players were named in the Premier League team of the season?
What is the PFA?
The PFA is the Professional Footballers' Association, which is a trade union which looks after the working conditions and rights of professional footballers in England and Wales. The PFA is the oldest professional sport's union in the world. The PFA currently has over 4,000 members who play, or have played in all four professional divisions in the English league.
Who votes for the PFA awards?
The PFA awards have been going for over 40 years. Each member of the PFA votes for a player, which means the awards are highly valued because other professional footballers vote for the winners. Players cannot vote for players at the same club. The voting takes place in March so the winning players don't always come from the team that wins the League! There are awards for both men and women, for senior and young players, and a team of the season is also named.
Who won this year?
This year's winners were:
- Player of the Year: Eden Hazard, Chelsea.
- Young Player of the Year: Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur.
- Women's Player of the Year: Ji So-Yun, Chelsea.
- Women's Young Player of the Year: Leah Williamson, Arsenal.
Eden Hazard won the main award after a fantastic season with Chelsea. Hazard has scored 13 goals and made 8 assists in 33 matches for Chelsea this season and has been the creative force behind Chelsea's fight for a fourth Premier League title. Hazard can add his award to the Young Player of the Year award he won last season!
"I don't know if I deserve to win but it is good for me. It is better to be voted by the players - they know everything about football." Eden Hazard, talking at the PFA award ceremony.
Who was named in the team of the season?
Goalkeeper - David De Gea was selected in the PFA Team of the Year for the first time. He has been a key part of the defence that is close to reaching the Champions League after Manchester United missed the competition last season.
Defenders - England's Gary Cahill has been named in the team for a second consecutive season and this time he is joined by his defensive teammates; John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic. Ivanovic, like Cahill, is in the team of the season for a second time, and Terry is named in the team for a fourth time. Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne is the only defender that stops the team from being a Chelsea back four. Chelsea and Southampton have both had excellent defences this season and both teams have conceded the same amount of goals (26) after 34 matches.
Midfielders - Chelsea's Nemanja Matic is another Chelsea player that makes the team. Matic has had a superb season and is probably the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League. Alongside Matic and Hazard in midfield, are Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez and Phillipe Coutinho from Liverpool. Sanchez made a sparkling start to the season after his record-breaking transfer from Barcelona and has become one of the stars of the Premier League. Coutinho has also had a fine season and his Brazilian flair has been a bright spot in a slightly disappointing season for Liverpool.
Forwards - The two strikers included in the team are Chelsea's Diego Costa and Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur. Costa has provided plenty of goals for Chelsea in an area where they had found difficulties the previous season. Kane has been the Premier League's revelation this seaon. A player who only made his debut last season and was not guaranteed a first team place until December, he has taken the League by storm. Kane has 20 goals and Costa 19 after 34 matches. One player that might be disappointed not to make the team is Sergio Aguero. He currently has 21 goals and may finish the Premier League's top scorer this season, but a disappointing season for Manchester City may have cost Aguero a place in the team.
What do you think?
There is only room for 11 players in any team of the season. Do you agree with the choices? There is no place for goalkeepers such as Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois or West Ham's Adrian, who have had excellent seasons. In defence, there were no places for Southampton's Jose Fonte or Ryan Bertrand. In midfield, does Manchester City's David Silva, Tottenham's Christian Eriksen or Man Utd's Ander Herrera deserve a place? Are there any other strikers that could have been in the team? What about Manchester Utd's Wayne Rooney, QPR's Charlie Austin or of course Manchester City's Sergio Aguero?

I think he did. Hazard's been on fire when he is not struggling with clinical conditions.
The team of the season was perfect. It's became more and more difficult to confirm just 11 players in a competittion like PL.

He totally deserved it because he is very skillful and creative.
The team of the season was well picked although I think there are too many Chelsea players.
I would have chosen Sergio Aguero.
Some of Manchester United and Manchester City players.

Chelsea needs to make some changes, some players are not giving their best this season. They are like some Championship team in this first half of the season..

Yes he did. Fair enough, it's not easy to choose best 11, so I agree this year's list. Maybe I would mention Olivier Giroud and Raheem Sterling.. I predict that Andre Ayew and Alexis Sanchez will find their place in the top 11.

it is well deserved. This guy made a great season and despite the fact Chelsea was playing without striker due to Remy and Costa injuries, he was the one who scored important goals like the one against Man Utd which was a decisive win for the tittle

I think that Hazard deserved the award for this season because he is leader and engine of the Chelsea. More or less I agree with the team of the season. Maybe I would change Costa for Aguero. Next season I think that award for the young player can win Hector Bellerin from Arsenal because his game is exciting, he is one of the most speed players and also he has good shot technic. Maybe he can be also in the team of the season with a more players from Arsenal (Ozil, Cazorla, Coquelin).
