Fantasy Football – The Real Thing
Jon Reeson of Bedford in the UK, one of the recent champions in the Barclays Premier League Fantasy Football, beat 2.3 million others to win this famous competition.
It is meant to be as realistic as possible with January transfers included.
Rule Changes
Jon said "Previously, players had only one chance all season to make big changes. This gives people the chance to switch things around if they make a bad start but with the security of knowing they can still sign plenty of new players in the New Year.
"It should make the game even better although it is already excellent. It is easy to see why it is the world's biggest fantasy football game and, in my opinion, the best.
"It is not just the fact it is free - although that is a big bonus. It is the fact it is so well set up and it has evolved so well. The transfer values are spot on to the point where there are many occasions where you are just 0.1m short. It can be so frustrating - but that is also part of the skill and the fun."
Reeson still finds it hard to believe he beat so many other managers to top the Fantasy Premier League, winning a VIP trip to a Barclays Premier League match, hotel accommodation and £250 spending money.
He added: "I was top for the whole of the last three months of the season so the pressure was on me going into the final gameweek even though I had more points than anyone else.
"I hardly slept the night before the deadline as I thought about every decision to make sure I did not mess it up.
"But it all went well and I was thrilled when the points were confirmed and I saw my name still at the top.
"It feels quite strange to know I beat almost two and a half million people across the globe. But after leading for so long, it was more a feeling of relief than anything else.
"I ended up getting quite a lot of attention on various internet forums where people were talking about me. One person even pretended to be me and was giving people advice so in the end I had to register for the forum and tell people what was going on. He disappeared quite soon afterwards."
Extra Research
So what are the secrets of success for the real Jon Reeson?
He said: "I have been playing this game for years and I stick to the same formula consistently.
"I get cheap defenders and goalkeepers and I move them around according to their club fixtures and I save my money for the big-name players I really want such as Robin van Persie, Sergio Aguero and Eden Hazard.
"I had van Persie as captain most weeks and I was fortunate that the weeks I changed him were usually the ones where he had a low score and the person I picked in his place seemed to do well.”
Jon, a West Ham fan said “I always try to avoid picking Steven Gerrard. He is a great player but I have not forgiven him for almost single-handedly helping Liverpool beat West Ham in the 2006 FA Cup final." Well, that game was definitely reality!

I agree that Giroud is a good choice at the moment but he was quite unfortunate to score an own goal this weekend((( I'm glad he compensated that with an excellent header. Silva is back, but I don't think he is worth drafting in your team, 'cause their final third looks like to be Aguero, KDB and Sterling, in my opinion. I have kept Kane, taking into account his favourable fixtures in future, and he earned me just a point this weekend((( should have opted for Ighalo or Deeney. I have captained Sadio Mane and it turned out to be a bad choice(

I was awful this week, with 39 points I was again under average so I fell down on the table:( I thought that I made right decision, but I got wrong. Also I bought Sadio Mane, Ayew, Martial instead to buy Deeney, Ighalo or Mahrez. I think that I have found good investment for the future- Watmore(Sunderland, price 4,3)? Have you watched him, I think that he is auspicious for buying?

Even though I was above average this weekend (earned 60 points), I dropped a little bit because of my captain - Mane who brought me only 4 points. But I was lucky to have Mahrez on my squad. Those two Leicester players (Riyad and Jamie) are consistently earning points for me) If you are asking my advice about Watmore, I would say he is a promising youngster and could be a cheap differential for the upcoming home fixture against Watford, but with Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool coming next I don't think Sunderland players are a good investment. Instead, I have great expectations for Everton and Spurs, namely Lukaku and Kane. I am also keeping a close eye on Stoke (Arnautovic, Krkic and Xaquiri). If they show the same performance as they did at Etihad Stadium, they could improve their league standing. And now, Rema, I must ask you to apologise me, but I think they will beat West Ham this weekend.

I hope that your prediction about our defeat won't come true. I have only one correction, Stoke were played at home at Britannia Stadium not on Etihad Stadium. What you think about Wilfried Bony- our most discussion player(for this week)?

It turned out that Wilfried was a better option than Sterling (who was on my team). But I must admit Man City were very tired after their tough Champions League match vs Borussia Mönchengladbach. And I will quote here a cliche I've learnt from Rich 'Form is temporary, class is permanent.'

Firstly, I suppose there was some disagreement with Jose. Secondly, when the overall team performance is so poor, it's hard to pull out the whole team alone and, on top of it, when you are not getting results, you become more and more depressed. Thirdly, I believe last season his commitment and performance were so high that he had set the bar too high and now can't catch up with it. I am almost sure he will have a much better second half of the season.

Our defenders were very good on this match(without injured Winston Reid) :) On this match we made our second back-to-back clean sheets this season. Also it seems to me that Antonio will be a good reinforcement. What you think about buying him(FPL), maybe he can be good investment for the future(Bilic will give him more space in absence of our key's players)?

Congrats! Another proof of West Ham's resilient and solid defence in Wales: three clean sheets now in a row - quite an achievement considering that they are injury-hit. As for investment in the Hammers' attack, I would wait for Dimitri's return (expected back in full training in 10 days) and rather buy one of their defenders.

Frankly speaking, I can't resist the temptation to play my wildcard at a very early stage. This year I used it somewhere in between GW2 and GW5)) For this GW I also bought Kurt, and I am sure Jose will continue selecting him for the first XI (unfortunately, the Blues could not keep the clean sheet against Bournemouth, and I'm really sorry that I advised you to invest in Chelsea's defence). However, with festive gameweeks ahead of us, based on my fantasy football experience, the defence should be solid, because all the midfielders and strikers will be under the threat of rotation, whereas good defenders will definitely seal their positions and time on the pitch.

No problem my friend, probably Kurt will be good investment for the future. By the way I'm glad about Bournemouth's victory against Chelsea because, first of all, I love when some underdog beat favorite and second I love that brave way of Bournemouth's playing(they haven't had enough luck because they have a lot of injured players, primarily Callum Wilson). I wish them luck in the future and I wish them to avoid relegation this season. I had Ritchie in my squad till this gameweek but I sold him. He is one great player but his price on the market was decreased and that was burdened my budget.

2) To tell you the truth, I was hoping for a 0-0 draw and I still believe that the goal-scorer Glenn Murray should have been ruled offside (remember our debate about introducing new technologies!))
3) I couldn't agree more on Bournemouth's brave style of playing. If I'm not mistaken, they are among the leaders in shots from the box. But considering their injuries and a pretty tough run of fixtures, you are right to part with Ritchie, 'cause I don't see many points coming from the Cherries in the near future. Who knows? Now I read a scout review about bonus points within http://fantasy.premierleague.com/ and I'm little confused.''Spurs left-back Rose won five of his eight tackles and added nine recoveries and seven clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) to his clean sheet.'' 1.)Tackle is a try to take the ball from a player in the other team, or (in rugby or American football) to do this by taking hold of the player and making them fall(Cambridge Dictionaries Online). 2.) Interception is the act of catching a ball intended for someone on the opposing team, 3.) clearance is an occasion when a player kicks the ball away from their goal. I got this from the OPTA website which collects Premier League data: a recovery is "where a player wins back the ball when it has gone loose or where the ball has been played directly to him." I can imagine a scenario after a corner, for example, where the ball is cleared but goes nowhere, when a player gets that ball it will be counted as a recovery. Does that help?

I can guess something. I imagine this situation to present on live example and I'm lead with your instruction. I choose West Ham defenders to describe this situation. Using the earlier definition I would say this was correct, yes. I was wondering, if Reid had cleared the ball and then had run after it, would he have been given a point for a clearance and a point for a recovery?

Theoretically I think that he is awarded with two points, for clearance and for a recovery, but I think that is practically can't be done. Who decides about this statistics?

What's the difference between obviously and apparently? We had this two adverbs in the learn section.

Hi Rema,
We normally use 'obviously' when a fact is easy to understand like; '1+1 is obviously 2' or when we are sure something is going to happen like; 'Chelsea are playing Sunderland at home so they're obviously going to win'. We use 'apparently' when we have heard something is true, but we're not sure about it e.g. 'Apparently, Rooney is going to sign for Everton, but I don't believe it for one minute!'. Hope that helps.

Thanks Rich, I understand your explanation and I must to find more examples to improve this. Who was the last year Premier League Fantasy winner and do you have the interview with him?

I'm not sure who won it last year. We should get an article on it. Have you chosen your fantasy football team for this season?

Not yet, I choose now players for my team. I have one proposal for you. I was talk with you last year and you tell me that you also play fantasy.
Now I think that we can create our own League- Premier Skills English within Premier League Fantasy site. Members of our League would be learners and teacher for Premier Skills English site. Also you can build here one section where we can comments about last game week, where we can exchange information about gameweek, talk with our winner for gameweek and many other thing we can do here... I think that would be great.

Thanks my friend for supporting this idea :) Now is little late for that league, but next year we can create our premier skills english league if Jack and Rich agree with that. Anyway, we can continue from this place to exchange advice about current form of players and a lot of other things in relations with FPL ;)

Jack-Rich, it's worthwhile for you to reckon on that. You've got at least two supporters :) We can launch a vote on the web site for creating the league next season. And you would be able to create content by using some interesting expressions and phrases from fantasy scout articles )

Thanks Nikosonris and Rema.
I've already made a note of your suggestion. We have thought about the best way to do this in the past, but never come up with a clear plan. When we plan next season's content, we'll think about this idea seriously!

First i know about fantasy football about 4 years ago, when my classmate by the university shared me link from the website of european football union. It was fantasy, based on Champions League, the most popular football competention in Europe. I was excited of the possibility to contest with the managers from the another countries, to try my manager skills, and, of course, to have a possibility to win some prize :)
My success was average comparing to other players, sometimes I was more successfull, than the most of others, sometimes less. But i have never been at the top. Actually my strategy was far not ideal, it rather from time to time strokes of luck in my oscillation results.
I played fantasy a couple of seasons. In the end i started to forgot to do checking of my squad before games. It shows decreasing of interest to fantasy football from me. This season I've tryed to renew my playing, but before play-off i've lost the most of interest to my fantasy team. I don't know why exactly, maybe i like live football more, than fantasy.

Maybe you was only played Champions League fantasy, not the Premier League fantasy.
This two fantasies aren't equal.
