This Week: Champions League Special

Read the transcript and listen at the same time.

This Week: Champions League Special

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our weekly round-up section called ‘This Week’ on Premier Skills English.

Jack: Hi there. I’m Jack. We’ve got lots of interesting words and phrases to help you talk about football in English.

Rich: If you want to listen and read at the same time we have a transcript of this podcast on the Premier Skills English website.

Jack: This week we focus on the Champions League Final and a special day for Brentford football club.

Rich: We’re going to look at three headlines from the weekend’s action and in each headline, we will take a look at some football language for you to practise.

Jack: Don’t forget that you can find more football and English on the Premier Skills English website or you can subscribe to our YouTube channel.

Rich: You’ll be very surprised to hear that our YouTube channel is called Premier Skills English.

Jack: The vocabulary we are looking at this week is:  to go round the keeper, a defence-splitting pass, to leave someone out, to pay the penalty, Play-Off Final and top flight.

Rich: Remember that we’ll also have a language challenge for you to have a go at later in the show so you need to be ready for that.

Headline 1

Jack: Chelsea are Champions of Europe.

Rich: Chelsea won the Champions League for a second time with a 1-0 win against Manchester City in the all-Premier League clash. Kai Havertz got the winning goal late in the first half when he went round the keeper following a defence-splitting pass from Mason Mount.

Jack: A big congratulations to Chelsea for winning the Champions League. It was a great performance.

Rich: Yes, it was fully deserved. Chelsea created the best chances and were defensively excellent. N’Golo Kante was the best player on the pitch for me.

Jack: Chelsea’s defence was brilliant - Reece James, Ben Chilwell - and Antonio Rudiger was immense.

Rich: I’m sure the fans will remember this on for a long time to come. OK, we’ve taken a couple of phrases from the headline - let’s look at those.

Jack: The first is to go round the keeper. When a striker is running towards goal with only the goalkeeper left to beat they have a few choices.

Rich: They can shoot - they could chip the ball over the goalkeeper maybe or they could try to go round the goalkeeper.

Jack: This is what Kai Havertz did. He took the ball round the keeper and then put the ball in an empty net.

Rich: Let’s look at another phrase. I described Mason Mount’s pass as defence-splitting. I said ‘Kai Haverts went round the keeper following a defence-splitting pass from Mason Mount’.

Jack: A defence-splitting pass is usually a long pass that allows a striker to run into space between defenders. The pass splits - it breaks the defence.

Rich: It was a superb defence-splitting pass from Mount.

Jack: Let’s move on to our next headline.

Headline 2

Rich: City fall at Final hurdle.

Jack: It was disappointment for Manchester City who went into the final as favourites. Guardiola surprisingly left out both Fernandinho and Rodri from his starting eleven and they paid the penalty with Chelsea creating the better chances throughout the evening.

Rich: Commiserations to Manchester City. A very disappointing result for City but they will be back next season and they have won the Premier League.

Jack: I imagine that is of little consolation right now but they can still look back on a great season with two trophies and a first Champions League Final.

Rich: Let’s look at a bit of language. The first phrase I want to look at is to leave out. Jack said that Pep Guardiola left out Rodri and Fernandinho.

Jack: This is a common football phrasal verb. It usually means not to include someone in the starting eleven. Rodri and Fernandinho were not included in Manchester CIty’s starting eleven.

Rich: The other phrase I want to look at from the headline is to pay the penalty. This is an idiom and it means to suffer because of something that you have done.

Jack: We are saying that Guardiola paid the penalty for not including Fernandinho or Rodri in his starting eleven. It was a risk and it didn’t work out.

Rich: We also use the word price with this idiom - we can pay the penalty or pay the price for something that we have done.

Jack: Let’s move on to our final headline.

Headline 3

Jack: Buzzing Bees promoted.

Rich: Brentford won promotion to the Premier League for the first time with a 2-0 win against Swansea in the Play-Off Final. It’s the first time that the Bees have been in the top flight for seventy years and they become the 50th club to play Premier League football.

Jack: A big congratulations to Brentford for what will be a first-ever Premier League season. What can we tell people about Brentford, Rich?

Rich: Brentford are a London team - they are based in West London so not too far from Chelsea and Fulham. Their nickname is the Bees and they have a Danish manager called Thomas Frank.

Jack: And he’s done a brilliant job! I’m sure we’ll telling you a lot more about the Bees when the new season arrives. For now, let’s look at a bit of language.

Rich: Brentford won the Play-Off Final. We see play-offs in lots of sports especially American ones but they have become popular in football to decide a final promotion place.

Jack: A play-off or the play-offs are a series of matches between a number of teams to decide a winner.

Rich: In English football the play-offs are played between the teams finishing third, fourth, fifth and sixth. There are semi-finals and then the final.

Jack: Brentford won the Play Off Final and have been promoted.

Rich: The final phrase we’re going to look at today is the top flight. The top flight is another way of describing the top division.

Jack: In England, the top flight is the Premier League. Brentford have been promoted to the top flight. They will be playing top-flight football for the first time in over 70 years.

Rich: OK, we’ve looked at three stories and six words and phrases in our headlines. The language we’ve looked at was: to go round the keeper, a defence-splitting pass, to leave someone out, to pay the penalty, Play Off Final and top flight.

Jack: Listen to the headlines again to hear this language in context and don’t forget to look at the website for the transcript if you want to check your understanding of any of this vocabulary.

Headlines - Repeat

Language Challenge

Jack: To finish up the show we’ve got a quick language  challenge connected to this week’s vocabulary.

Rich: We looked at six words and phrases in this week’s headlines, and your language challenge is to use some of this language to complete some sentences.

Jack: Here are the three sentences. You have to try to guess the missing word. Are you ready?

Rich: Number one: Do you think Manchester City should have left Fernandinho _____ of the team against Chelsea?

Jack: Number two: Norwich and Watford have been promoted to the top _______ along with Brentford.

Rich: Number three: She went ______ the keeper and put the ball in the empty net.

Jack: We want you to write the answers on the Premier Skills English website where we have some more questions and activities connected to this week’s show.

Rich: Or write your answers on Apple Podcasts or on Youtube if that’s where you listen to us. Just write the answers in the comments and say hi.

Jack: Before we finish we just wanted to say that we hope you found this lesson useful and we hope all of you stay fit and healthy.

Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

1. Yes , I definitely watched the most important game of the season , the Champions League Final , and I think Guardiola paid the penalty for his philosophy and tactics nevertheless Chelsea had a brilliant game with exceptional performance from Kanté and the full backs of Chelsea. Congratulations for Chelsea fans all around the world.

2. I’m not surprised during the game because the team who wanted the trophy most have won despite I predicted a win for City before the game.

3. I have heard about them since last season and they were about to get promoted but they lost to Fulham in the play-off last season I guess.
I thought there was a city called Brentford like Bradford whereas I was surprised to know that the club is located in the West of London. I know they have an experienced striker called Ivan Toney. I’m looking forward to watching him with all the lads next season.

Hi Rich!
I'd like suggest a football phrase which is called "******** ************" According to FIFA transfer rules; when a young player becomes professional and signs her/his first contract it's paid to the previous club(s).

Talking about the headlines, I've watched the Champions League Final and in my opinion Chelsea deserved win. City didn't play well. Maybe Guardiola had been wrong to left out Fernandinho and Rodrigo. But, it's not necessary true. Chelsea played better all the final. It's not a surprise for me. Tuchel's team is a great squad too.
About the playoff final, it wasn't a surprise for mee too.
Brentford almost promoted for the last three years. I didn't know a lot about Brentford. Just that they known to its mascot, a bee, and that play in a new stadium in London. Its home town.
It's all. Best regards!

Did you watch the Champions League Final? What did you think?

I wasn't able to watch the final, but I just watched the goal and highlights from the match on youtube. If the match unfolds as it is shown on youtube, I would say it was a deserved victory.

Were you surprised by the final result?

I'm surprised that Manchester City has fallen at the final hurdle. But this is football, and they are in the top-flight league. So, no one was going to hand the title to them on a plate.

What do you know about Brentford? The latest team to play Premier League football for the first time.

This is the first time I heard about them. At least, now I know they are a football team from London and which nickname is "the bees." A big congratulations to the Bees. Hoping they are the bee's knees.

Hello guys,

I have a question. When describing teams in the UK, I'm not sure if you use plural while in the US they use singular. Is this correct? I mean,

Chelsea are Champions of Europe (UK)
Chelsea is the champion of Europe (US)

Do you think Manchester City should have left Fernandinho *** of the team against Chelsea?

Norwich and Watford have been promoted to the top ****** along with Brentford.

Hi Wilson2103,

It's an excellent question and one that we've been asked a few times. Actually, we've done a whole podcast about group nouns that centres on this question, but basically, you're right in the US the singular form is used while in the UK there is a tendency to use plural forms although if we are referring to the club as a business we will probably use the singular form.

Here's that podcast if you want to see our full answer: https://premierskillsenglish.britishcouncil.org/skills/listen/podcasts/g...

i think that we can define the match of chelsea as a ¨perfect match¨ in the sense that they never lose the control of the game, they always had the match under control despite not having the majority of possesion and obviusly, another fundamental factor to chelsea´s victory was another special night of in my opinion his MVP of the season, N´golo Kante. Congratulations to chelsea and specially his manager thomas tuchel for the work he has done until now and manchester city, it will be another time.

1-Yes, Chelsea looked eager to lift trophy and well organised.
2- I’m surprised. I'd predicted as the result would be draw. Extra time or penalty shooting would have determined winner.
3-I haven’t heard Brentford before. I've seen on internet that there are also Brentford Turkish fans society. Shame on me-:)
4-
Do you think Manchester City should have left Fernandinho *** of the team against Chelsea?
Norwich and Watford have been promoted to the top ****** along with Brentford.
She went ***** the keeper and put the ball in the empty net.

PHRASES
• Instead of going round the keeper the guaranteed way to score is chipping slightly the ball over the goalkeeper. Kicking the ball directly towards goalkeeper is a way achieve no result.

• A defence splitting pass that resulted goal is an indicator of much space in defence line and fault to form blocks against opponent strikers.

• Anybody who don't care about health would pay price of this faults when getting older.

• Both of my city and hometown teams have lost chance to promote upper divisions at the play-off matches in this unlucky year-:)

- Chelsea played aggressively and at the same time defensively, and it seemed to have come as a surprise to ManCity. Guardiola made a mistake with the starting 11 in my opinion and didn't manage to make the team feel victorious, and the German coach made no mistakes, it seems, at all. The result was prognosable.

- Were you surprised by the final result

- No way! I predicted Chelsea's win before the match.

1. Yes I did. It was a fantastic final.
2. No, I wasn't surprised. Man City won Premier League, but the last two between Man City and Chelsea were won by Chelsea (2-1 and 1-0). Chelsea has won 3 of their last 4 matches against Man City.
3 I don't know that team. Congratulation to them.
4 Yes I did.
