Introduction
Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our weekly round-up section called ‘This Week’ on Premier Skills English.
Jack: Hi there. I’m Jack. We’ve got lots of interesting words and phrases to help you talk about football in English.
Rich: We want you to use and practise these phrases by interacting with Premier League fans from around the world in our comments section.
Jack: If you listen to us on Spotify or Apple Podcasts, you can leave your comments in the review section. We do read all the reviews and would love to hear from you.
Rich: You can find all our latest content on the Premier Skills English homepage or the Premier Skills-British Council Facebook page.
Rich: This week we have news from two rounds of Premier League matches. Matchweek 24 and Matchweek 25.
Jack: Let’s start with our headlines!
Headlines
Jack: City fall to shock defeat at Newcastle.
Rich: Newcastle Utd beat Manchester City by two goals to one and pull themselves out of the relegation zone. It all looked rosy for City when Sergio Aguero put City ahead after just 23 seconds - the fastest goal of the season. In the second half, Newcastle came back with goals from Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie to send the Geordie fans home happy and make Liverpool fans even happier.
Jack: Liverpool fail to capitalise on City slip.
Rich: Following Manchester City’s defeat, Liverpool had a chance to go seven points clear at the top but were held to a 1-1 draw by a resolute Leicester City team.
Jack: City close the gap once again.
Rich: In Matchweek 25, City closed the gap on their title rivals with a convincing win against Arsenal. Sergio Aguero scored his tenth Premier League hat-trick and is now only one hat-trick away from Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League record.
Jack: United up to fifth and big weeks for Wolves and Spurs.
Rich: Manchester United salvaged a draw against Burnley and got a 1-0 win against Leicester to go above Arsenal and make it ten matches unbeaten for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Wolves and Spurs were the only teams to take maximum points from Matchweeks 24 and 25.
Jack: Some great games there and some shock results. Who saw that Newcastle result coming?!
Vocabulary alert!
Rich: In our vocabulary alert, we look at some football English that we used in the headlines.
Jack: Our six words and phrases this week are: to put ahead, to come back, to salvage, to look rosy, a convincing win and to take maximum points.
Rich: Let’s start with put ahead. Sergio Aguero put Manchester City ahead against Newcastle. To put ahead means to score first.
Jack: If another team equalises and then the other team scores again we can say the player put his team back ahead.
Rich: Newcastle came back to win against Manchester City and Manchester Utd came back against Burnley. To come back means to equalise or to go ahead in a match.
Jack: To salvage means to get something out of a bad performance. Manchester Utd salvaged a draw against Burnley.
Rich: To look rosy means everyone is happy and everything is going well. It was all looking rosy for Manchester City when Aguero scored after just 23 seconds against Newcastle.
Jack: The next phrase is a convincing win. This is a common phrase when one team wins easily and plays well. Manchester City had a convincing win against Arsenal.
Rich: The last phrase is to take maximum points. This phrase means to win and take all three points that are available for a victory. Wolves and Spurs were the only teams to take maximum points from Matchweeks 24 and 25. They both got six points.
Football Awards
Rich: Right, every week, we give out three Matchweek awards.
Jack: The awards are Player of the Week, Team of the Week and Goal of the Week.
Rich: In the comments section, you need to tell us if you agree with our choices.
Jack: Let’s start with Player of the Week. There were some strong performances in the last two Matchweeks.
Rich: Raul Jimenez scored three times over the two Matchweeks and Alexander Mitrovic had a great game for Fulham in Matchweek 24.
Jack: But our Player of the Week is Sergio Aguero. Despite losing to Newcastle, Aguero still got on the scoresheet and then scored a hat-trick against Arsenal. What a player!
Rich: What about our Team of the Week? A really difficult choice this week. Newcastle had that amazing win against City but were then beaten by Spurs. Spurs won both their games but our team of the week is another who took home maximum points: Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Jack: Finally, Goal of the Week. Wolves’ Mexican striker, Raul Jimenez scored a great little chip over the goalkeeper against West Ham and Marcus Rashford scored another good goal for Manchester Utd.
Rich: But our pick is Andre Gomes’ goal for Everton against Wolves. Everton finished on the losing side in a 3-1 defeat but it was a great finish by the player who is on loan from Barcelona.
Matchweek Prediction
Jack: Every week, Rich predicts the result of one Premier League match and we want you to make your prediction, too.
Rich: It’s Matchweek 25 and the match I’m predicting this weekend is Manchester City against Chelsea. City bounced back from that defeat against Newcastle with a convincing win against Arsenal. Chelsea bounced back from their own defeat (4-0 against Bournemouth) with a convincing 5-0 win against Huddersfield. Both teams will want to take maximum points from this one for different reasons. Chelsea are fighting for a Champions League place while City are in a title tussle with Liverpool. I think City will come out on top. Final score: Manchester City 2-1 Chelsea.
Jack: I think Gonzalo Higuain will be the difference for Chelsea. I think the London team will win 1-0.
Rich: Make your predictions on the page below. You get one point if you predict the right result and three points if you predict the right score.
Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for. I hope you have enjoyed this football round-up. Join the discussion at the bottom of the page.
Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

1. Kun Aguero was happy with his new hat-trick in Premier League. In one hand we can say that he has been enjoying scoring for a great team which of course have been staying giving him numerous occasions to put the ball home. On the other hand we would mention that it is hard to stay in form as City first striker when talented player like Gabriel Jesus is struggling to take his chance in the same place. In fact only Allan Shearer of Newcastle has ever scored one hat-trick morethan Aguero.
2. Two perfect weeks for Wolves this time. Hope they will again make such good results.
3. I am not a fan of Andre Gomes who has not been brilliant when playing for Barcelona.
4. Chelsea had a convincing win against Huddersfield with five goals but it was a surprising defeat of four to nile away to Bournemouth. For their part City need to keep Liverpool under their results until the last week.

I totally agree with your choices.
I think the games are becoming more and more competitve especialy at the top of the table, Liverpool needs to take the maximum points from their games if they want to win the Premier league title this season, while Manchester City has to avoide losing any points in the upcoming games to keep all their chances to take the lead and maintain the title.
