Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our Monday round-up section on Premier Skills English.
Jack: Hi everyone. I’m Jack. Every Monday, we discuss last weekend’s action, the best players, the best matches, Fantasy Football, Football English phrases and make some predictions for next weekend.
Rich: We want you to practise your English and, at the same time, interact with Premier League fans in our comments section.
Jack: Either on the Premier Skills English website or the Premier Skills-British Council Facebook page - if that’s where you are listening to us.
Rich: Let’s get on with this week’s round up!
Jack: Let’s take a look at this week’s headlines …
Next, we’re doing section 2: the headlines
Headlines
Rich: Chelsea win at Wembley.
Jack: Chelsea got their first win of the season as they beat Tottenham 2-1. Marcos Alonso scored a stunning free-kick for the visitors. Spurs equalised with 10 minutes to go but there was still time for Alonso to get his second and Chelsea’s winner.
Rich: United hit four past Swansea to record back to back 4-0 wins.
Jack: Manchester Utd won 4-0 for the second week running and are the early Premier League leaders. The scorers were Eric Bailly, Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.
Rich: Jese stuns Arsenal on debut to give Stoke all three points.
Jack: Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season as they lost 1-0 at Stoke City. The ex-Real Madrid player, Jese Rodriguez, scored the winning goal on an exciting debut for Stoke.
Rich: A great weekend of Premier League matches.
Jack: Yeah, some great matches. What about that game at Wembley?
Rich: Not the best start for Tottenham at their new home. I think they were a bit unlucky - Chelsea scored a stunning goal but Spurs had all the possession but just couldn’t get the ball in the net.
Jack: Maybe … Chelsea showed how strong they are at the back and it looks like they are getting back into form after that surprise home defeat to Burnley on the opening day of the season.
Rich: Manchester Utd scored another four goals. That’s back to back wins for Utd - two consecutive 4-0 wins. They’re looking really strong in attack.
Jack: Yes, you’re right, although it was only 1-0 until the last few minutes. I think 4-0 was a little harsh on Swansea. They didn’t deserve to lose so badly.
Rich: Arsenal didn’t look so good at Stoke.
Jack: I think they were just unlucky. The opposite of your team, Liverpool, who got a lucky 1-0 win against Crystal Palace.
Rich: Lucky? We should have scored 10!
Matchweek Awards
Rich: Right, every Monday, we give out three Matchweek awards. Player of the week, Team of the week and match of the week.
Jack: In the comments section, you need to tell us if you agree with our choices …
Rich: Last week, most of you agreed with our match and team of the week, but some of you had some different ideas about who should have won player of the week.
Jack: Italy96 from Italy, Amgad from Egypt and Neryweh from Turkey all thought that the prizes should have gone to Lukaku for his performance against West Ham. It was a tough choice as there were some great performances - what about this week, Rich?
Rich: So many to choose from again … Jese Rodriguez getting the winner on his debut for Stoke, Henrikh Mkhitaryan with a couple of assists for Manchester Utd or maybe Riyad Mahrez who was looking really good for Leicester City in their 2-0 home win.
Jack: But we can only choose one and our Matchweek 2 Player of the week award goes to … (drumroll) Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso.
Rich: A great match for Alonso; a fantastic free-kick and the winning goal for the Blues.
Jack: Our next award is for team of the week …West Brom, Manchester Utd and Huddersfield all have two wins out of two but …
Rich: Our Matchweek 2 Team of the week goes to … (drumroll) Manchester United!
Jack: A perfect start for Jose Mourinho’s men.
Rich: And our third and final award is for the match of the week. There were 20 goals scored on the second weekend of the Premier League season - not including the Manchester City - Everton match that is being played tonight. Our match of the weekend is Southampton 3-2 West Ham.
Jack: A fantastic match; 5 goals, a red card, a comeback and a late winner for the hosts.
Rich: Charlie Austin got the winner so I’ve got to say this.
Jack: Say what?
Rich: Austin powers Saints to victory. Austin Powers. Do you get it?
Jack: Not awful but pretty bad, Rich.
Fantasy Football
Rich: What’s been happening in fantasy football this week, Jack?
Jack: Lots of points being scored - it was a good weekend for Manchester Utd defenders - especially Eric Bailly - Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso was the top scorer with 16 points.
Rich: Remember that Premier Skills also has a private league which you can join for free. The only thing you need is a private league code.
Jack: The code is 883788-212918.
Rich: You can join now and each matchweek we will announce the Fantasy Premier Skills team of the Week!
Jack: Who’s this week’s Fantasy Premier Skills team of the week so far?
Rich: The Premier Skills Fantasy Premier League Team of the Week for Matchweek 2 is The Ekualisers which is managed by Marc Harrison from Malaysia (clapping) The Ekualisers have scored 76 points and have gone to the top of the Premier Skills league!
Matchweek Prediction
Jack: Last week’s prediction was Tottenham v Chelsea. You thought Spurs would win - bad prediction, Rich. However, some of our listeners predicted a Chelsea win. Amgad from Egypt, Italy96 from Italy, and RafaelRC from Brazil all predicted a Chelsea win. Well done to all three of you!
Rich: Not a great prediction from me but most people thought Tottenham would win, you know.
Jack: Yeah, yeah … Which match are you going to look at this week?
Rich: This weekend’s big match is Liverpool v Arsenal. It’s my team against yours Jack! Both teams have had a mixed start to the season. Liverpool have four points and Arsenal have three. Liverpool are playing an important Champions League match on Wednesday so could be a bit tired on Sunday. That’s my excuse in case we lose, but I think Liverpool will have too much for Arsenal. Liverpool are at home and I think Sadio Mane will get the winner in a 2-1 win for the Reds!
Jack: You must be joking! Arsenal will be nice and relaxed and win the match 2-0!
Rich: We’ll see … we want you to make your predictions at the bottom of the page on the website. Are you a good predictor?
Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for now. I hope you have enjoyed this Monday round-up. Don’t forget to join the discussion at the bottom of this page.
Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

1. I saw Alonso in the first Chelsea match of the season and I can say that he has been trying during all the play to do good things. His kick-offs were great and he pushes all the way through on his side. Undoubtiously he will be one of the stars this year.
2. Second best week match for Moreno' players. The Man United manager is still looking for adding new great names to the squad. Of course there will be some title on the end.
3. I can't choose the best match since I have seen only two of them involving the foxes and the blues.
4. The gunners will win and I agree with Jack's final score. Two from Welbeck and Giroud!

Hi Elghoul
Alonso is brilliant going forward. I'm surprised that he hasn't been called up by Spain Yet. Did you know that his dad and his granddad played for Spain?

The Reds are back to where they belong -- the Champions League!
Get in !!!
As for this week's awards, no doubt that Marcos Alonso is a great pick for the player of the week.
Man Utd a team of the week? I can't argue about that!
I agree with the choice of the Saints against the Hummers as the match of the week. It was another thriller!
My prediction for Liverpool-Arsenal game, well,,,, with the two sides easily conceeding goals, I think we could see a lot of goals. Of course, I hope for a Liverpool win, but sorry I predict a 3-3 draw. I hope the Reds prove me wrong!

Hi R!ch
Yeah, I think the Reds are in a much better group. hope they will go further this season.
As for Spurs, the are not lucky as they have been put in the group of death! Knowing that the German side are beasts at their home, I still think Spurs are capable of snatching the second seat to the last-16, if I said the Spanish Giants are the favourites to win the group. Of course anything can happen in this crazy game, so, that's only on paper!

Please correct if there is an error. At first I thank Manchester United who did not take me down. As such, I think Manchester United is the best team in the second week of the Premier League, if in just four minutes they could score three goals. I wish to go that way. Thank you

Hi Ahmed Musa
Thanks for your message. Manchester Utd had a great week! The main correction that I want to look at is: '... Manchester Utd who did not take me down'
The correct phrase is to let someone down which means to fail to help or support someone as expected.
The correct sentence should be 'Thanks to Manchester Utd who did not let me down'
Hope that helps!

Hi guys! :)
First of all, thank you very much for the podcast; it's a pleasure studying with you!
I definitely agree with your choices of "Team of the week" and "Player of the week".
However, also Huddersfield Town played very well, an impressive start by this team!
For the "Match of the week", I would have chosen Tottenham vs Chelsea.
It was a very great match with a fantastic final.
I have seen also another great match that is Huddersfield - Newcastle; very tactical one, congratulations to David Wagner and his team!
Steve Mounie, Huddersfield's striker, is a talented player, we should keep an eye on him.
Then, I really loved the atmosphere of John Smith stadium, what a wonderful fan base they have!
Regarding this week's big match, I predict a draw between Liverpool and Arsenal, maybe 0-0 or 1-1.
I don't want to talk about the disaster that I have made with my fantasy football team ahahah; Just to give an idea, I played the "Triple captain" and my captain was Salah...you can imagine!

Hi Italy96
Thanks for your message of support, it's very much appreciated! I didn't watch the Huddersfield match but I did notice Steve Mounie on the opening day when he scored two goals against Crystal Palace - he looked very good! Salah as captain - not a good choice! Player rotation can be a nightmare sometimes!! Martial as captain next week? That's a bit risky too!!

Hi my friends,
I agree with the award to Marcos Alonso, but he was very lucky that Wayne Rooney played on monday. This guy is wonderful.
I think Manchester Utd has started very well this season, but they have scored many goals in the last minutes, when the other team has their arms down. This weekend I would give the award to Chelsea. They win away to Tottenham at Wembley.
My prediction for the next big match is 1-0 win for Liverpool.
See you. I really like learn english in this website!!!!!
