In this week's Premier Skills English podcast, Rich and Jack talk about the latest from the Premier League and a bad-tempered match between Manchester City and Chelsea. The language focus this week is on words and phrases that we use to show that we are angry. We also have a new football phrase for you to guess and a Premier League prediction for you to make. Vocabulary

In the podcast, Rich and Jack used some words and phrases that might be new for you. You can see two examples here:

Tottenham thrashed Swansea City 5-0.

Liverpool lost ground at the top of the table.

There were a few more tricky words in the podcast. Can you remember all of them? Try the activity below, then, listen to the podcast again to hear how we used the words in context. This can really help with understanding.

Words - Getting Angry

In the podcast, we looked at lots of words that are used to show that you are angry. Here are a couple of examples from the podcast:

Chelsea came out on top in a bad-tempered match with Manchester City.
When I'm grumpy, I complain a lot about small things.

Bad-tempered means to become angry easily. This could describe a person (the mood that he or she is in) or an event; a football match that is bad-tempered will have lots of fouls and bad tackles.

Grumpy also means to become angry easily but also someone who complains a lot. This time grumpy can only be used to describe a person. You can be grumpy but a football match can't be grumpy.

We often use different words to describe how angry we are. We might only be a little bit angry or we might be very, very angry. Take a look at these adjectives and the level of anger from a little to a lot:

irritated > cross > annoyed > furious > livid

Language - Extreme Adjectives and Gradable Adjectives

Some adjectives are gradable which means that you can change how strong they are by using 'very' or 'a bit'.

I get a bit irritated when someone stands in front of me at a football match.

I get very cross when nobody helps an old person in the street.

Extreme adjectives are not gradable. The only adverbs you can use are ones like: 'really', 'completely' and 'absolutely'.

I was absolutely livid when the other team scored a last-minute goal.

I was absolutely furious with the referee when he gave my favourite player a red card.

In this activity, take a look at the sentences and decide if you should use a gradable adjective or an extreme adjective.

Phrases - Getting Angry

In the podcast, we looked at some phrases that are used to show that you are angry. Here are a couple of examples from the podcast:

Players from both teams had to be separated when things boiled over.
Sergio Aguero saw red in more ways than one last weekend.

There are lots of idioms that are connected to being angry. To boil over means for a discussion to get out of control or to get too much. This can result in a discussion or a protest turning into violence. To see red means to get really angry and to lose control which can again mean being violent or just shouting and screaming a lot.

Jack: Where we talk about football and help you with your English.

Jack: What have we got going on this week Rich?

Rich: In this week’s show, we’re going to talk about all the latest news from last weekend’s Premier League football and we’re going to take a look at some vocabulary you can use to talk about getting angry.

Jack: We also have a new football phrase for you to guess and a Premier League prediction for you to make - our Premier League prediction league is getting really close!

Latest news

Jack: Let’s start with the Premier League headlines this week.

Rich: Chelsea come out on top in a bad-tempered match with City.

Jack: Chelsea stayed top of the Premier League after a fantastic 3-1 away win at Manchester City. Diego Costa, Willian and Eden Hazard got the goals for Chelsea. City had Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho sent off in injury time.

Rich: London rivals Arsenal and Spurs both hit five.

Jack: Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez hit a hat-trick as Arsenal beat West Ham 5-1 and Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham thrashed Swansea 5-0.

Rich: Bournemouth battle back to beat Liverpool.

Jack: Liverpool lost ground at the top of the table as they lost to a brilliant Bournemouth team. Liverpool went 2-0 and 3-1 ahead but Bournemouth battled back both times and won the game 4-3 with the winning goal arriving in the fourth minute of injury time.

Player of the Week

Jack: Some great performances last week. Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser came on as substitute and won a penalty, scored a goal and got an assist, Christian Benteke scored twice to help Palace to their first win in eight Premier League matches

and Eden Hazard had a great game for Chelsea.

Rich: But our player of the week this week scored a fantastic hat-trick last weekend and it’s Arsenal’s ……... Alexis Sanchez!

Jack: Great choice! He’s just amazing at the moment. Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are keeping Arsenal up near the top. We’ve got to keep them fit!

Language Focus: Vocabulary - Getting Angry

Rich: Earlier we said the City - Chelsea match was bad-tempered. What does this mean?

Jack: Bad-tempered means to get easily annoyed or angry. So, in a bad-tempered match you will see bad tackles, lots of fouls, yellow cards and probably red cards, too.

Rich: Yes, in the City-Chelsea match there were two sendings off in the last minute and both clubs have been charged with failing to control their players.

Jack: Fernandinho will be banned for three matches and Sergio Aguero for four matches after his bad tackle on David Luiz. He gets an extra match ban or sometimes we say suspension because he was also sent off earlier in the season.

Rich: Not very good news for City or millions of Fantasy Premier League managers!

Jack: And it wasn’t the only Premier League match where the players were getting hot under the collar this weekend. West Brom and Watford have also been charged with failing to control their players.

Rich: Yeah, Watford had a player sent off in that one and players from both teams had to be separated when things boiled over!

Sting

Jack: Let’s look at some of the vocabulary from this section, Rich. So, we have the word bad-tempered. Bad-tempered means to be angry.

Rich: We often say that we lose our temper which means to be in a bad mood or become angry. You can say it was a bad-tempered match or I was feeling bad-tempered - I was in an angry mood. I’m often bad-tempered in the morning.

Jack: There are lots of words to describe being angry. When Rich said he was bad-tempered in the morning he probably means grumpy. Grumpy is used to show you are in a bad mood, you probably don’t shout and scream, do you Rich?

Rich: Grumpy is a great word and no I don’t shout and scream but it’s true I’m often grumpy in the morning. When I’m grumpy I complain a lot; I always find some small problems. My coffee's cold, I can’t find the toothpaste and I can never find two socks that match.

Jack: That’s one word that is similar to angry, now we’re going to give you a few more words that you can use to show how angry you are. The words we’re going to look at first are irritated, cross, annoyed, furious and livid.

Rich: Sometimes we are just a little bit angry and sometimes we’re very, very angry and in English we have lots of words to show how angry someone is.

Jack: Let’s start with a little bit angry. If you are a little bit angry you might be irritated.

Rich: I get irritated when the bus is late or when someone stands in front of me when I’m trying to watch the match.

Jack: Oh yes that is very irritating. Can you see the difference there? Rich is irritated when the bus is late. The bus arriving late is irritating. The adjective finishes in -ed when it describes how you feel but it finishes in -ing when it describes the thing that makes you feel that way.

Rich: Going back to the meaning…. irritated means a little bit angry, then we can get more angry by using the next word ‘cross’. Cross is a little stronger than irritated and we can put some adjectives in order to show how strong they are. Let’s look at those synonyms of angry again.

Jack: Irritated is the weakest then we have cross and then annoyed. After annoyed we have furious and then we have livid. Each word is stronger than the next so irritated means just angry a little bit and livid means really, really angry.

Rich: Cross and annoyed are probably the closest in meaning to angry. Cross is a little bit less powerful. I am cross when I see people not helping old people in the street but I’m not angry - I’m not going to go over and hit them in the face.

Jack: No, I hope not. That would mean you are furious or livid but I still hope you wouldn’t hit anyone!

Rich: No, of course not - I do shout and scream sometimes when I am angry but, no, that would be too much. Let’s look at how we use these words some more.

Jack: When we use irritated, cross, annoyed and angry we can use the word ‘very’ to make them stronger or ‘a little’ to make them weaker. These types of adjectives are called gradable adjectives because we can change how strong they are.

Rich: But the other two adjectives ‘furious’ and ‘livid’ are called absolute adjectives - they already have the word ‘very’ in their meaning. Furious is stronger than very, very, very, very angry.

Jack: But if you want to make absolute adjectives even stronger there are a few useful adverbs you can use. These are really, completely and absolutely.

Rich: You can say I am absolutely furious or absolutely livid. I think livid is the strongest word you can use to talk about being angry so saying you’re absolutely livid is super strong.

Sting

Rich: There are also some interesting phrases to talk about being angry. We’re going to look at three of them. ‘To get hot under the collar’, ‘to boil over’ and ‘to see red’.

Jack: Let’s start with to get hot under the collar. The collar is the top part of your shirt. The phrase means, of course, to get angry.

Rich: When you are angry you can imagine getting hot and feeling your collar because it feels tight.

Jack: The next phrase is to boil over - water boils at 100C and you can say arguments or anger boils over which means to erupt in anger - like a volcano.

Rich: Yes, anger definitely boiled over at the end of that City-Chelsea match. The last phrase is to see red. When someone sees red it means that they are furious and uncontrollable like a bull running at a red flag.

Jack: So we can say that Sergio Aguero saw red in more ways than one at the weekend!

Rich: Yes, maybe it would have been better if he had calmed down before that tackle and Fernandinho could have turned the other cheek before reacting.

Jack: Calm down and turn the other cheek. Two nice phrases to talk about reacting to anger. We look at these more in the explanations and activities on the podcast page on the website.

Can you work out this week’s football phrase?

Rich: Have you got a football phrase for us this week?

Jack: Yes, I have, but first last week’s football phrase. The phrase was a stretcher. A stretcher is what the medical team use to take players off the pitch if they can’t walk. Last week Philippe Coutinho was taken off the pitch on a stretcher and he’s going to be out of action for a couple of months.

Rich: And it looks like Liverpool need him after the result at the weekend! Well done to Alex and Liubomyr from Ukraine and Kwesimanifest from Ghana. You got the right answer last week!

Rich: This week’s phrase.... Is it an easy one, Jack?

Jack: Not sure. The phrase is * ***-****** ******. This is a type of challenge when you use both of your feet and both feet are usually off the floor and over the ball when they make contact with the other player. The ***-****** ****** is a foul and the referee will often give a red card for this offence.

Rich: Yes, ***-****** ******* are dangerous. Players need to keep their cool and not do these types of tackle if they want to stay on the pitch.

Premier League Prediction

Rich: Last week’s prediction was the match between Manchester City and Chelsea. I thought City would win and Jack thought it would be a draw but well done to our listeners - you went for Chelsea so a point for you! You predicted the right result but not the score because most of you thought it would finish 2-1 to Chelsea.

Jack: It’s very close in our Prediction League. That takes our listeners level with you Rich but you’re still behind me. I’m top by one point! Which match are you speaking about this week, Rich?

Rich: This week’s big match sees Manchester Utd take on Spurs at Old Trafford. Spurs had a great 5-0 win last week but United have drawn their last four home matches in the Premier League. This is not what Manchester Utd fans are used to and Utd need a win to close the gap at the top of the table. But I can’t see them doing it and I think this match is going to finish in another draw. Final score: Manchester Utd 1-1 Tottenham

Jack: As an Arsenal fan I can never go with Spurs. I think Utd will win 2-0.

2- It was a derby match between two rival teams of İstanbul (GS-FB), the most bad-tempered match I’ve ever seen. Before starting match the players of two teams came for stretching in the different parts of the pitch. Then they started arguing and shouting to each other. In the end there was five red card and bad-tempered match I didn.t enjoy it. What referee can do only smiles and try to calm things down.

• I get irritated when my colleague came to my office to chat even I’m working on a project which have a close date deadline. Small talks such as gossip irritating .
 I always get absolutely livid when I accused of any financial damage or blamed for something I didn’t do or didn’t say or someone’s fault.
• I get very cross when someones behaves selfish to buy more than needed on hard time like pandemic.

PHRASES
• A famous politician got hot under the collar when inteview on TV turned to her/his private life.
• She boiled out and started to shout at the seller when she realised that she was deceived.
• He saw red when someone made mock of him.
• “A” trashed “B” in the election.The main reason was unrealistic promises of “B” as a result of this “B” lost the ground in race.

I watched the game and Chelsea derserved to win because they were lethal in their opponent's area. It's not about possession it's about precision

I think the match between Al-Ahli and Al-Zemalik was a bad tempered match.Players from out the pitch went to the pitch and the official could not control things so he left the pitch and after 10 minutes they continued the match.

1.I saw a little part of it on TV. Chelsea really deserve to win.
2.The MCA VS USMA match for the trophy of season 2015/2016 was very bad tempered and the referee hardly monitered it. The newly designed coach of USMA Mr Put was really outset as he put it in an interview.
3.I usually became a bit irritated when I saw wasting bread in the street.
I was absolutely livid when my car was stolen.
I get very cross when the bus doesn't stop at the station.

1. I feel disappointed when City's players don't stay cool when they can't win or equalize. 2 years ago it happened in the match against CSKA Moscow. City scored 1 but conceded 2 goals in the first half. However cityzens couldn't equalize in the second half, they got hot under the collar and both Yaya Toure and Fernandinho were sent off. As far as I've seen the same during the match against Chelsea - unfortunately I have to admit that Chelsea deserved to win. Once again I'm absolutely livid and hartbroken due to the loan of Joe Hart. In my point of view he is much better than Claudio Bravo.
2. It was a match between Portugal and the Netherlands or "The Battle of Nuremberg" in 2006. 16 yellow and 4 red cards were shown by russian referee Valentin Ivanov. It was really difficult to see that match because it was more rudeness and whistles than football. Referee firstly told players stop to commit fouls and then booked and sent them off.
3. I get a bit irritated when somebody wakes me up before my alarm clock rings.
I get absolutely livid when somebody sets me a meeting and informs me that he or she will not come when 10-15 minutes before meeting left.
My best friend got very cross yesterday when CSKA Moscow was defeated by Tottenham.
