Premier Skills English Podcast 4
In our latest Premier Skills English Podcast, we're looking back at some great Premier League careers and looking forward to seeing some new clubs in action.
How much did you understand?
Rich: Hello and welcome to our new Premier Skills English podcast.
Jack: Hi everyone! In this week’s podcast we’re going to look back and look forward.
Rich: At the weekend, we said goodbye to the Premier League for another season.
Jack: Yes, and there were some very exciting games.
Rich: Yes, Theo Walcott got a great hat-trick for Arsenal.
Jack: And Stoke scored six against Liverpool!
Rich: Thanks for reminding me, Jack.
Jack: And we said goodbye to some teams too. Hull City are going down to the Championship next season.
Rich: Yes, Hull have been relegated with Burnley and QPR - we won’t see them in the Premier League next year.
Jack: And who’s coming up?
Rich: Watford and Norwich City have been promoted and for the first ever time Bournemouth will play in the Premier League. It’s the first time in 125 years that Bournemouth will play in the top division.
Jack: Wow! I’m looking forward to watching them play.
Rich: We’re also saying goodbye to some famous players this week.
Jack: Who’s that, Rich?
Rich: Last weekend, Steven Gerrard at Liverpool, Frank Lampard at Manchester City and Didier Drogba at Chelsea played their last Premier League games.
Jack: Yes, it does seem like the end of an era.
Rich: What does that phrase mean, Jack? The end of an era?
Jack: Well, Rich. An era in an important time in history so when people say it’s the end of an era, it means when a period of time finishes and something important comes to an end.
Rich: And Gerrard and Lampard have been playing in the Premier League for a long time and they were record-breaking players so it’s certainly the end of an era.
Jack: So, Rich there’s no football now. What are you going to do?
Rich: I’m not sure. I haven’t thought about it yet.
Jack: Well, I’m looking forward to my holidays.
Rich: What does “looking forward to” mean?
Jack: It means to be happy about something that is going to happen in the future. What are you looking forward to Rich?
Rich: There’s only one thing I’m looking forward to. The start of next season!
Jack: Well. there’s only 72 days to go! Now listeners, what are you looking forward to seeing in the Premier League - maybe a new player or a new club - let us know in the comments section below.
Rich: Well that’s all for now. Thanks for listening.
Jack: If you’re listening to this on itunes or elsewhere, come back to Premier Skills English for some language activities, a quiz and lots more. You can find us at www.britishcouncil.org/premierskillsenglish.
Rich: Don’t forget if you sign in, you can score points to see if you can get your club, your country and your name to the top of our leaderboard.
Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

I don't know who had the best career in the Premier league between the three of them. Since I prefer Liverpool to Chelsea, I pick Gerrard. Yeah, it's pretty subjective, but his contribution to Liverpool was remarkable. One of the most important moments is when he played the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul. He scored 1st crucial goal for Liverpool in the second half of the match and was lauded as the catalyst for the comeback until finally Liverpool won the title by defeating Milan. Drogba and Lampard were also good when they were playing for Chelsea.
I'm looking forward to visiting my parents. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, I haven't met them and only communicate via video calls.
