Premier Skills English Podcast 13
In this week's podcast, Jack and Rich talk about a player who has fulfilled many childhood dreams. At just 16 years old, Reece Oxford, has made his Premier League debut. Jack and Rich talk about the young West Ham midfielder, what's happening in the Premier League and look at more football related vocabulary.
How much did you understand?
Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to this week’s Premier Skills English podcast.
Jack: Hi everyone. I’m Jack and every week we talk about football and help you with your English.
Rich: This week, we’re going to talk about the start of the Premier League season, hopes and dreams and I’m going to make another Premier League prediction.
Jack: But, before we start. Last week we had a comment from Rema from Serbia. Rema asked what the expression ‘left it late’ means.
Rich: It’s quite a common expression that means to do something at the last moment when you don’t have much time. In football it’s used when a team scores a goal late in the match to win a game or get a draw.
Jack: Manchester Utd used to be famous for leaving it late when Alex Ferguson was the manager.
Rich: And Liverpool left it late to score the winner against Stoke last weekend. I think it was the 86th minute.
Jack: I think they were a bit lucky! Anyway, the Premier League season started with a bang last weekend!
Rich: Yes, that’s a fun phrase. If something happens with a bang it means something is very successful and exciting and there were some really exciting matches, but what were the highlights for you Jack?
Jack: Before we talk about the football can you explain what ‘highlights’ are?
Rich: Highlights are the best parts of something. So the highlight of my summer holiday to Paris was going up the Eiffel Tower or in a football match the highlights are the parts of the match that are shown on TV later like the goals and other interesting action.
Jack: Well, the highlights for me last weekend were Manchester City’s 3-0 away win against West Brom. They looked great and David Silva was fantastic. And another highlight was West Ham’s performance at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal. That was a big surprise and a difficult match for Arsenal fans!
Rich: Yes, it was. West Ham played really well. And did you see Reece Oxford make his debut in midfield for West Ham?
Jack: Yes, he was brilliant and he’s only 16!
Rich: Yeah, I know. He’s the second youngest player ever to start a Premier League match.
Jack: Do you know that he gets his school exam results this week?
Rich: That’s right, all 16 year olds in the UK get their exam results this week. Well he certainly passed his exam at the Emirates with flying colours.
Jack: Another great expression! Can you explain what with flying colours means, Rich?
Rich: Yes, of course. To pass an exam or a test with flying colours means to pass something successfully and easily.
Jack: Did you pass all your exams with flying colours Rich?
Rich; Of course, Jack. But I remember feeling really nervous about getting my results. Exam results are really important because they can help you achieve your dreams or destroy them.
Jack: But not everyone’s dreams depend on getting good exam results.
Rich: Yes... I used to dream about becoming a footballer.
Jack: I think that’s a dream that many children have; to be a Premier League footballer!
Rich: I always wanted to be like Ian Rush and then like Robbie Fowler. But I never really got past the reserves at my school team!
Jack: It must be a dream come true for Reece Oxford.
Rich: Yes, after the match he said that ‘it was a dream debut’ and he was going home to celebrate with his mum and dad.
Jack: He also said that he got Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s shirt after the match. Oxlade-Chamberlain was also only 16 when he made his debut for Southampton.
Rich: When I was 16, if I’d been asked to play in a Premier League match, I’d have been scared stiff.
Jack: Yes, me too. To be scared stiff means to be so frightened that you can’t move.
Rich: I suppose that’s why they are professional footballers, eh?
Jack: Let’s move on to this week’s Premier League Prediction. You did quite well last week Rich. You said Liverpool would beat Stoke and The Reds won 1-0. You must have been quite happy.
Rich: Yes, I was. I was happy with the result and the prediction. A great goal from Coutinho and you can read all about the Brazilian on our homepage because he’s our Player of the Week.
Jack: Well, you got the result right but you didn’t get the score right because you predicted 2-1. Let’s see how well you do this week.
Rich: This weekend’s highlight in the Premier League has to be the match at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester between City and Chelsea. Chelsea are looking for their first win of the season but City started the season with a bang. Last season, Jose Mourinho got his tactics right and collected a 1-0 win and I’m sure Chelsea will defend and try to score on the counter-attack. But, Yaya Toure and David Silva have started the season in good form for City, so I think it will be close and City might leave it late but they will get the victory this time. My prediction is Manchester City 1-0 Chelsea.
Jack: If you disagree with Rich’s prediction, and many people do, then write your prediction in the comments section below.
Rich: Well that’s all for now. Thanks for listening.
Jack: If you’re listening to this on itunes or elsewhere, come back to Premier Skills English for some language activities, a quiz and lots more. You can find us at www.britishcouncil.org/ .
Rich: Don’t forget if you sign in, you can score points to see if you can get your club, your country and your name to the top of our leaderboard.
Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

When I was under five years old, my family said that I imagined to be a soldier. I don't know why. When I was in elementary school, I wanted to be a reporter. I thought, by being a reporter, I can visit many countries and see other worlds besides my home town. However, in senior high school, everything changed. My choices at that time were to be an accountant, chemical engineer, or doctor.
Now, I hope to have a balanced life. I work, but don't want to be too busy achieving many things. Just live a simple life and have a happy family.
I agree with Rich's prediction.

I have a lot of things to write for this podcast. Firstly, it’s “16 year olds in the UK…”or “16 years old in the UK…”
By the way, Reece Oxford with his tall of 1.90 might be a talented footballer and great future.
Secondly, the expression “‘left it late’” is same as saying ‘in the 90mn’ or ‘in lost time’ or ‘in extra time’ = an extension of time by some minutes that arbitrator gives to players when they lost time in match?
I remember that I left it late to prepare the exams; it was always one or two days before exam day, sometimes the night of exam for easy curses.
Thirdly, I wanted to be a doctor when I was younger, but my baccalaureate score wasn’t enough to get the school of medicine. It’s ok for my graduation, I’m engineer in Biology and I’m so satisfied and grateful. For now, I hope that I get the job of my dream, be a lab researcher! But, unfortunately, we have a small number of labs here.
Finally, for the prediction, you are so close Rich, it’s 3-0 not 1-0; Manchester City 3-0 Chelsea (SUN, 16 AUG 2015). I told you, you are the expert!

I'm one of the children who dreamed being a Football player, even when I was younger - around fourteen/fifteen, I played for my departamental team, so I was near to reach my dream, but I had to decide between my school and the soccer, so I finally decided by my school.
Right now I'm an amateur football player and usually play once a week.

When I was younger I strongly wanted to be a police officer and work on big criminal cases. Then I discovered the beauty of football and became a United fan, so every day I dreamt of visiting Manchester and Old Trafford. That dream came true this year and I was so impressed by the city and especially the kindness of British people that I wouldn't mind living there. So now I hope that some time in the future I will have the opportunity to leave for Manchester and watch every United home match from the stands of Old Trafford :) I am a bit late to make a prediction but I expected City to win as for now I can't see any weak points in this team.
