Five tips to improve your writing skills

Five tips to improve your writing skills

In this week's Premier Skills English podcast, Rich and Jack talk about the latest news from the Premier League as Chelsea continue to win and Liverpool get back to winning ways. The language focus this week is on different ways to improve your writing skills. Jack and Rich share five tips that could help you with your writing skills and they look at how to answer an essay question about football. We also have a new football phrase for you to guess and announce our Player of the Week. Enjoy!

How much did you understand?

Vocabulary

In the podcast, Rich and Jack used some words and phrases that might be new for you. You can see two examples here:

Goals from an in-form Eden Hazard and Diego Costa gave Chelsea a comfortable win against West Ham.

The fans create brilliant atmospheres in Premier League stadiums.

There were a few more tricky words in the podcast. Can you remember all of them? Try the activity below, then, listen to the podcast again to hear how we used the words in context. This can really help with understanding.

Activity 1: In this activity, have a look at the vocabulary and try to match it to the correct definition.
Can you match the words to their definitions?

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Tyrone Mings have been suspended for three and five matches, respectively.

Learner Training - Writing Skills

In this week's podcast, Rich and Jack shared five tips to improve your writing. Think about the advice they gave you and how it can help you develop different learning strategies and study skills. Look at the five tips again. Do you do any of these things? Do you think they could help you with your English?

Five tips to help you with your writing

  1. Brainstorm. Before you start writing, think about what you have to write and all the possible answers. No idea is too silly at this point!
  2. Organise your ideas. Decide which ideas are the most important or the most interesting. To create a balance opinion essay you should include opposite opinions.
  3. Write paragraphs. Include an introduction and a conclusion. Put each idea into its own paragraph. Write a topic sentence at the beginning of each paragraph.
  4. Use linking words. These help the reader understand relationships between sentences and paragraphs. For example; 'in addition' will add an extra opinion and 'on the other hand' is used to contrast two different opinions.
  5. Proofread. When you finish your essay, read it again and check vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. Then, use an online grammar check such as Grammarly to help.

One of the tips that Jack and Rich gave you in the podcast was using linking words. Linking words are very helpful to give your essay structure because they can help you link one idea to another. For example, if you use 'in addition' at the beginning of a paragraph, the reader will know that the paragraph you are writing gives more information about the same idea. But, if you use 'on the other hand' the reader will know that the paragraph will include an idea or opinion that is different from the previous one. In this activity, take a look at some more linking words and decide if they are used to give the same or different ideas.

Activity 2: In this activity, look at the different linking words and decide if they are used to give the same idea, a different idea, a reason or to put something in order.
Can you put the linking words in the correct group?

Can you think of any other strategies that you use to get more writing practice and improve your writing skills? Can you think of any other situations where you might use some of these tips?

Southampton's Manolo Gabbiadini is our Player of the Week.

Welcome

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich

Jack: and I’m Jack

Rich: and welcome to this week’s Premier Skills English  podcast

Jack: Where we talk about football and help you with your English.

Jack: What’s happening this week, Rich?

Rich: In this week’s show, we’re going to talk about the latest in the Premier League and we’re going to give you five tips to help you with your writing skills.

Jack: Writing, OK. Have you heard the joke about the broken pencil?

Rich: Sorry, what did you say?

Jack: Have you heard the joke about the broken pencil?

Rich: Errr. No.

Jack: It doesn’t matter. It’s pointless.

Rich: Sorry I don’t get it. I don’t understand.

Jack: The pencil is broken. It has no point.

Rich: Ahhhh! Awful. That’s just a terrible joke, Jack.

Jack: Sorry.

Rich: So, we will be looking at writing tips later - things to help you with your writing. And we won’t have any more terrible jokes.

Jack: No, we won’t. I promise. But, before we talk more about writing, let’s take a look at this week’s Premier League headlines.

Headlines

Rich: Chelsea go 10 points clear at the top.

Jack: Chelsea beat West Ham 2-1 at the London Stadium. Goals from an in-form Eden Hazard and another from Diego Costa gave Chelsea a comfortable victory.

Rich: Manchester Utd are held at home by Bournemouth.

Jack: United could only draw at home to Bournemouth who battled bravely for nearly an hour with only 10 men. Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed a penalty and is now banned for three matches after he was suspended for using an elbow that wasn’t seen by the referee.

Rich: Liverpool get their season back on track.

Jack: Liverpool beat Arsenal 3-1 at Anfield to get back into the Champions League places and leave their opponents in fifth place and worried about not qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years!

Rich: A great win for Liverpool, Jack!

Jack: Yes, let’s not talk about Arsenal this week!

Language/Topic Focus

Jack: We said earlier that we are going to give you five tips to improve your writing skills in this week’s podcast.

Rich: Writing is important. You might need to write an important email at work, you might need to write an essay or an exam question. We all have to write sometimes.

Jack: Yes, sometimes it might be quite formal like what you said before or it might be more informal like a comment on this website or really informal like a whatsapp message or on your mobile.

Rich: There are many types of writing but what we want to help you with is a longer piece of writing. Something that will help you develop your writing skills and allow you to give opinions and use lots of language.

Rich: We’re going to take one question and think about how we might write an opinion essay.

Jack: Our question or essay title is: Is the Premier League the best league in the world?

Rich: We’re going to ask you to give an answer to this question at the bottom of the page. But first, we want to share five tips with you that will help you give a better answer.

Jack: Let’s start with tip number one. Tip number one is brainstorm.

Rich: This means putting your pen down and thinking about as many ideas as possible. Empty your brain!

Jack: It’s good to do this with a friend but you can do it on your own as well. You need to think of as many answers as possible. No idea is too silly!

Rich: Let’s brainstorm our question, Jack.

Jack: It’s the most exciting League. There are lots of goals, there are players from all over the world, the fans create brilliant atmospheres in the stadium, teams at the bottom can beat teams at the top, the managers have the best beards!

Rich: Yes, there are lots of good reasons. We want to create a balanced essay so we need to think of some opposite arguments, too.

Jack: Well, maybe the game is too fast or a Premier League team hasn’t won a European competition for a while.

Rich: OK, good. We have lots of ideas. What is tip number two?

Jack: Tip number two is: organise your ideas.

Rich: You don’t want to write down all the ideas that came into your head. Some of them are better than others. We won’t put your idea about beards into the essay!

Jack: No, probably not. So we can decide which ideas are the most important or interesting. For this essay let’s choose two reasons why the Premier League is the best and two why it might not be.

Rich: So we have the ideas that we are going to use in the essay. What’s tip number three?

Jack: Tip number three is to write in paragraphs. For this essay we would have six paragraphs; an introduction, then two paragraphs for the positive reasons, two paragraphs for the negative reasons and finally a conclusion.

Rich: We should think about each paragraph as a mini essay with an introduction, a middle and a conclusion.

Jack: yes, each paragraph should have a topic sentence and it is probably easiest to write them at the beginning of each paragraph.

Rich: A topic sentence tells the reader what the rest of the topic is about.

Jack: In our essay, we might write ‘first of all, the Premier League is the most equal League in the world’.

Rich: The topic sentence is like a title. The rest of the paragraph will be about ‘why’ it is the most equal league in the world.

Jack: What’s tip number four?

Rich: Tip number four to improve your writing is to use linking words.

Jack: Linking words help the reader when you are changing the topic, giving an extra bit of information or giving an opposite point of view. They are often at the beginning of a paragraph or sentence but not always.

Rich: In the example earlier I said ‘first of all the Premier League is the most equal in the world’. This tells the reader I am making my first point. The next paragraph might begin with ‘in addition’ or ‘secondly’.

Jack: And when we want to give the opposite point of view we might begin the paragraph with ‘on the other hand’ or ‘ in contrast’.

Rich: What’s our final tip. Tip number five.

Jack: Tip number five is proofread. When you have finished, your writing, read it again and check for errors with vocabulary and grammar, check your topic sentences and think about the linking words you have used.

Rich: It’s best to do this yourself at first but then you can use online spell checkers. Microsoft word checks for grammar and spelling and there are online tools like grammarly that can help you with your writing, too.

Jack: So, there are our five tips to improve your writing. Let’s remind you what they are.

Rich: Tip number one: brainstorm.

Jack: Tip number two: organise your ideas.

Rich: Tip number three: write paragraphs

Jack: Tip number four: use linking words

Rich: Tip number five: proofread.

Jack: We’d love to see you practise your writing by answering the question in the comments section below.

Rich: Right, let’s get back to the football.

Player of the Week

Jack: Our player of the week this week is a player who has had an instant impact on the Premier League.

Rich: That’s right, it’s Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini. He’s scored six goals in his first four matches for the Saints.

Jack: Maybe you don’t know who he is. Well, you can find out more about him by reading the player of the week article. It’s up on our homepage and there is a lin on the side of this page.

Rich: We also have this week’s Football English Quiz in this article and we ask you who the best-ever Italian footballer in the Premier LEague.

Jack: It would be interesting to know what you think.

Can you work out this week’s football phrase?

Rich: Have you got a football phrase for us this week?

Jack: Yes, I have, but first, last week’s football phrase. The phrase was ‘hat trick’ and it is, of course, the phrase we use when a player scores three goals.

Rich: And many of you got it right, too! So well done to all of you!

Jack: The phrases this time is ** ** ******. It means not to be allowed to do something officially. For example, smoking ** ****** in public places in many countries.

Rich: And Zlatan Ibrahimovic *** **** ****** for three matches. I wonder how they will do without him.

Jack: Well, we’ll find out when Manchester Utd play Chelsea next Monday in the FA Cup.

Rich: If you want to know more about that match and make a prediction take a look at our prediction pages in the fans section on the website

Jack: Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for this week.

Rich: Don’t forget to write your answers to our questions and make a guess at our football phrase in the comments below.

Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football!

'Is the Premier League the best League in the world?'
At first, England is mainland of football. It’s been spread out across the world from there. It has football deep rooted historic tradition .
What’s more Premier League teams have high volume transfer budget, spirit of team-work,well-experienced scout teams. Their fast played game is always exciting the fans.
However having the best league didn’t contribute international footballer portfolio of country. It’s been especially seen when the forming national team for competitions. So there is no much options for the keeper or striker positions.
Consequently teams shouldn’t only having star players but also give chance to the unknown young players to improve and to be transferred higher divisions.

I agree that Premier League is the best league in the world because of the variety of players and techniques. Secondly , it's so competitive as the team in the last position of the league might beat the first position team. Furthermore , it has the best players in the world and it's very organised even the fonts of the players names at the back of the shirts are the same for all the teams
Whereas , the teams are sometimes exhausted while playing the Champions League due to the lack of taking rest during Christmas holiday
In conclusion , the Premier League is the best but with some slight changes in the regulations

The advice was very useful and I'm going to use them from now on
One of the tips I do think it's helpful too is to have a draft to write down the points you want to talk about in a bit of detail before you start your official essay

Hi Rich, Hi Jack, thank you for all these tips; they help.
The writing task is so hard and it's really stresful.
Could you please expalin to me what does mean the phrase "bullet points" ?
In academic writing, I found this sentence: "Writing test
answers must be given on the answer sheet and must be written in full. You may write entirely in capital letters if you wish. Notes or bullet points in whole or in part ARE NOT acceptable as answers".
I have googled the expression with no convincing explanation.
Please see these links:

What do they mean by "written in full" ?

Hi Haydi

Good to hear from you. A quick answer to your questions. Bullet points are what you use to write notes at the beginning of a line. For example, today I need to remember to:

  • feed the cat
  • buy some milk and bread
  • go to the dentist at 1700

The bullet points are not complete (or full) sentences. They are notes. When writing the IELTS exam you need to avoid using them.

Hope that helps.

Hi Rich, many thanks for responding me, I really appreciate it. I was confused; I don't know why I thought that bullet points are those notes we take quickly to save time, as info. instead of information! When I googled the expression, I found that what we call "hierarchical points", so things became more ambiguous in my head. Now, it's so clear what bullet points are. thank you again.

Writing requires a person to have a good eye and ear to language. You know, in the pre-digital era, humans needed only a pen and a sheet of paper to create a masterpiece. Today, writing is rather typing. This process is less spectacular (no one tears papers yelling “it’s my tragedy”), but it became creative indeed.  First of all, the new techniques have already appeared. Long-reads, mapping, and other interactive forms of writing broaden the horizons of expressiveness. At the same time, an open access to any source of information raises the risk of plagiarism occurring. Because clicking on the combination of “CTRL C” + “CTRL V’’ never takes much time.  Therefore, at the final step checking the work for plagiarism is quite reasonable. It won’t steal the priceless time, but will solve such a perennial problem as plagiarism. By the way, it doesn’t cost a lot, and, actually, this plagiarism checker https://unplag.com/  is free. So, I recommend to use it for those who want to feel confident in their originality.

Hi Maurice

Thanks for sharing. As most of the people on this site are learning English, I don't think that they need to worry too much about plagiarism, but we're always interested in online tools that learners can use to enhance their experience and improve their English. Do you use any other tools?

Thanks

Correct me
There are so many leagues in the world but, In my opinion, the premier league is the best league in the world . First of all, I have never seen so competitive league, each club fight until the end of the game. Each club do their best. Secondly, the premier league collects the best players from all over the world. Third, all matches are played at a high tempo until the final whistle. Have you ever seen so fast and intensive games anyway? And of course the atmosphere at stadiums is unbelievable.
On the other hand, english clubs can't show their best in the Europe. It is sad, but I think it is temporary. The premier league has so much money and requires a lot of effort, consequently, the clubs can't focus on European competition.

Hi Emil

Here are some corrections:

1. No need for a capital letter here

2. However, we do normally capitalise the Premier League.

3. This is an interesting mistake. We use so + adjective when the adjective comes after the noun. The Premier League is so competitive. If you want to add emphasis to an adjective before a noun, we use 'such a'. The Premier League is such a competitive league.

4. Each indicates a singular noun so the verb needs to agree as if it's the third person. 'Each club fights... Each club does their best.' This is confusing because each is often used with a plural prepositional phrase, but even then, it's still singular so the verb needs that third person 's'. Each of the clubs, does their best.

5. see 3

6. We use a comma after 'of course'.

7. This is a bit tricky. I know what you mean, but I would have said: English clubs don't do their best... or English clubs don't play as well as they should...

8. This last statement is general - it's about competitions.

I hope these are helpful.

correct me
I think, as many other people, Premier League is the best league in the world.
First of all, in this league, together with the Spanish league, is where there are the best players in the world. This is a good thing because the best players can do the best goals and offer the best football. And overall, I think It's the best because is the most competitive and the most equal. It's more equalise than the Spanish league, where Barcelona and Real Madrid both even wins the league. In the Premier League, although, anyone can win. For example last year Leicester won the championship.
In conclusion, for me, Premier League is the most exciting way to enjoy watching football and I recommend it to everyone.

The English Premier League is currently the best league in the world.
The EPL has the greatest players in the world and the most expensive transfers like Paul Pogba of Manchester united that was transferred last summer from Juventus for $116 million.
Another apspect is that the EPL is the most fastest and the most toughest league, the temp is very fast and ball goes around the ground very quickly.
On other hand EPL clubs didn't won Champions League or other competitions for many years and the Spanish or German clubs are more successful then the EPL teams.
Yet the EPL has the best coaches, players and fans in the world.

Correct me:
There are so many leagues in the world and most often the issue of which one of them is the best generates lots of talking point. These comparison of leagues ranges from players, managers, pitches to spectators among others.
The English Premier league is arguably the best in the world because it has an assembly of some of the world's finest players and managers in action every other week. From their dribbles to interceptions to passes and to instructions their abilities and talent are brought to book. These are what most fans would ideally like to see on the field of play and they get served each week.
Furthermore, there is greater competition in the English Premier League as underdogs are most likely to cause astonishment for the perceived gaints in the league. This sometimes result in waiting till the last game of the season to determine the winner of the season and at other times that things are different, that is when a winner emerges before the final game the difference in points of the top 4 teams are very little.
Having mentioned the above, there however is a limitation to why the premier league might not be the best in the world and that is their inability of the English teams to perform in the Champions league. The argument of most people is that if a team is that good it translate into its performance in the champion league and from that their league could be said to be the best.
Besides the English Premier league having some of the best players some people argue that, the worlds best players are most often chosen from the Spanish league and that qualifies it to be the best. What these persons forget however is that world best players are chosen based on club and country performance which vary based on the continent one finds himself that is for the country performances and the kind of countries that surround themselves performances.
In conclusion, even though the English Premier league teams do not seem to be doing very well in the champions league, it can still be said to be the best because of the audience it receives due to the parade of world class players and managers coupled with pitches as well as the intense competition that exist in the league.

Hi Kwesimanifest

Your writing, as always, is very good and there are not many mistakes in your essay. It's good to see that you are using lots of linking words at the beginning of paragraphs and substitution within your paragraphs (pronouns to replace nouns that you said earlier). I've made a few corrections below for you to think about. Get back to me if you have any questions.

1. The advice is useful. I can add that before the conclusion one would write the synthesis of the essai in a last paragraph.

2. Premier League is better than any other League in Football World.

It is born in the 19 century so it the first in the history. The rules have been established elsewhere in different countries in same forms.

Secondly we can assess that its budget is the wealthiest. The best players in the World are found in its teams.

Thirdly, one has to admit that the Premier League matches are seen through TV sets anywhere in the World.

In contrast we must easily accept that there are few English Clubs which have win European trophies these years.

In addition the English team is not the best in the World. They missed the final quatuors for years in fact.

In conclusion one have to say that the huge number of fans and the great amount of money they pay every year for seeing their favorite team are the better answer to this concern.

Correct me.
I believe that Premier League is the best league in the world. This is because the Premier League is very competitive, all matches played in high tempo till the final whistle and the best coaches in the world are there. Even in matches where leader hosts outsider the result could be unpredictable. Besides, there are such little things like high-quality pitches and packed stands which make the great atmosphere on every match.
But on the other hands Premier League clubs have little success in Europe which makes me believe that top-clubs from Spain and Germany are stronger than top English clubs. I think that in near future German Bundesliga could be named as the best league in the world if the leaders of English football couldn’t prove that they are among the very best clubs in Europe.
