English Language Day

English Language Day

In this week's Premier Skills English podcast, Rich and Jack talk about the latest news from the Premier League and also look forward to this weekend's FA Cup semi-finals. This week is English Language Day which is celebrated by the UN so we also speak about English and why many people think it is important to learn it. We listen to two Premier League players and they say why they think English is so important, too. As always, we have a new football phrase for you to guess and announce our Player of the Week. Enjoy!

Vocabulary

How much did you understand?

In the podcast, Rich and Jack used some words and phrases that might be new for you. You can see two examples here:

It will be a difficult game against an in-form City team.

A football chant is something fans repeat lots of times.

There were a few more tricky words in the podcast. Can you remember all of them? Try the activity below, then, listen to the podcast again to hear how we used the words in context. This can really help with understanding.

Activity 1

In this activity, have a look at the vocabulary and try to match it to the correct definition.
Can you match the words to their definitions?

Listen to Jose Fonte (centre) talk about the English language.

Learning

The English Language

In this week's podcast, Manchester City's Vincent Komapny and West Ham Utd's Jose Fonte spoke about the importance of English. Listen again. Look at the list of reason to learn English below. Who spoke about the reasons? Jose Fonte? Vincent Kompany? Neither of them? Both of them? Do you think these are good reasons to learn English?

Reasons to learn English

  1. To pass an exam.
  2. To speak to people from the UK.
  3. To speak to people from around the world.
  4. To learn about different cultures.
  5. It helps you learn other languages, too.

Can you think of any other reasons for learning English? Why are you learning English?

You can find all our interviews with Premier League players in our Player Interviews section. Each video has language activities, a quiz and a discussion

Listen to Vincent Kompany talk about the English language.

English Language Day

Rich: Big Day on Sunday.

Jack: I know. There will probably be a big celebration. It’s Shakespeare’s birthday.

Rich: Oh. Have you been invited?

Jack: To Shakespeare’s birthday party? He’s been dead for 400 years.

Rich: Oh. William Shakespeare.

Jack: You didn’t think I was talking about the Leicester manager, Craig Shakespeare!

Rich: No, of course not!

Welcome

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich

Jack: and I’m Jack

Rich: and welcome to this week’s Premier Skills English podcast

Jack: Where we talk about football and help you with your English.

Jack: What’s happening this week, Rich?

Rich: In this week’s show, we’re going to talk about the latest in the Premier League and because this week is English Language Day we have some interviews with Premier League talking about why English is important.

Jack: But first, let’s look at the Premier League headlines.

Headlines

Rich: The Special One strikes back.

Jack: Last weekend, Manchester Utd beat Chelsea 2-0 at Old Trafford. Goals from Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera gave Jose Mourinho his first win against his old team and kept alive Utd’s hopes of finishing in the top four.

Rich: Record breaking Spurs are chasing hard.

Jack: Spurs won for the 7th Premier League match in a row - the first time they have won 7 consecutive top division matches in 50 years. Tottenham are now only four points behind Chelsea. Bournemouth were Tottenham’s latest victims with the North London club winning 4-0.

Rich: Wembley Stadium ready for a big weekend.

Jack: There are two huge matches at England’s national stadium this weekend. Chelsea play Tottenham and Arsenal play Manchester City in this season’s FA Cup semi-finals.

Rich: This is what I was talking about earlier, Jack. When I said Big Day on Sunday!

Jack: Ah yes, it is and I’m predicting an Arsenal victory of course.

Rich: But it will be a difficult game against an in-form City team.

Jack: We speak more about the FA Cup semi-finals in this week’s prediction. There is a link on the side of this page. You can listen to our predictions and make your own predictions and discuss everything about this weekend’s semi-final matches.

Rich: Not just what you think will happen but let us know if you are watching the game and tell us what you thought after the match, too!

Player of the Week

Rich: There were lots of great performances in the Premier League last week.

Jack: Manchester City had a great 3-0 win away at Southampton. Leroy Sane is looking better every week for City and it makes a big difference for them to have Vincent Kompany back in the team.

Rich: Yes, Kompany scored, too! City have missed him this season. It’s a pity he’s had so many injuries recently.

Jack: But, this week we wanted to celebrate Tottenham’s record breaking run. It’s the first time Spurs have won 7 consecutive matches for 50 years.

Rich: It’s a fantastic achievement. Lots of Spurs players have been playing well. Mousa Dembele, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

Jack: But we’ve chosen Son Heung-Min as our Player of the Week.

Rich: He’s now the highest scoring Asian player in Premier League history. You can read all about him in the article in our player of the week section.

Topic/Language Focus

Jack: We mentioned earlier that this week the United Nations celebrates English Language Day.

Rich: Yes, it’s on the 23rd of April - this Sunday. It’s actually a big day in the UK and England. It’s also Shakespeare’s birthday, World Book Day, and St.George’s Day which is the national day of England.

Jack: Maybe we should learn to share some of these celebrations around. I wonder why we have all of them on the same day.

Rich: No idea! Anyway, we are going to talk about English and why we think it’s important to learn it.

Jack: A while ago, the Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany and West Ham Utd’s Jose Fonte spoke to Premier Skills English about why English is important.

Rich: So we’re not going to tell you why English is important we’re going to let these two Premier League players tell you what they think.

Jack: We want to know if you agree with their reasons.

Rich: Let’s start with a European Champion. This is Jose Fonte who won Euro 2016 with Portugal and now plays for West Ham.

Jose Fonte: It’s very important because everywhere in the world someone will speak English to you so you need to know a little bit of English so you can communicate with everyone. And it must be one of the most talked languages in the world.

Jack: Sound like good reasons to me. Next up is the Manchester City captain, Vincent Kompany.

Vincent Kompany: It does give you a chance to communicate with so many people from other cultures. And I’m not speaking just about the English but worldwide.

Rich: Vincent Kompany also has some good reasons for speaking English.

Jack: We’re not going to repeat what the two players said because your challenge is to listen to the players and tell us if you agree with their reasons for learning English in the comments section.

Rich: So when you listen to the players, try not to look at the transcript!

Jack: You can look at it afterwards to check you understood but to improve your listening skills you should just listen the first time.

Rich: I think people from the UK are often really lucky.

Jack: Why’s that Rich?

Rich: I was thinking about what the players said. People in the UK don’t need to learn English and people from around the world learn ours.

Jack: It’s true but that doesn’t mean people in the UK shouldn’t learn other languages and that’s what Vincent Kompany says. Have a listen.

Vincent Kompany: My advice to the English kids would be to learn other languages, too!

Rich: It is a good piece of advice. Which other languages do you think are important to know? Are other languages becoming more and more important?

Jack: Let’s ask our listeners this question in the comments section.

Can you work out this week’s football phrase?

Rich: Have you got a football phrase for us this week?

Jack: Yes, I have, but first, last week’s football phrase. The phrase was You only sing when you’re winning! Sing when you’re winning!. This is an example of a football chant. A football chant is something that fans repeat lots of times.

Rich: Well done to Liubomyr from Ukraine, Emir from Bosnia, Mon from Egypt, Kwesimanifest from Ghana and Ahmed Adam Mamado from Sudan. You all got the right answer!

Rich: What’s this week’s phrase?

Jack: We’re going to have an easy phrase this week. The phrase is ***** ****.  It’s something that you might see in this weekend’s FA Cup semi-finals. If, after 90 minutes, the scores are level the teams have to play 30 minutes of ***** ****.

Rich: Too easy, Jack!

Jack: Before, we go we want to tell you about this week’s fan of the week! It’s Abdallah who is a Chelsea fan from Kuwait.

Rich: If you want to know more about Abdallah - head over to the new section - fan of the week - in the fans section - there is a link on the side of the page.

Jack: And if you want to be a Fan of the Week, just send us an email or a comment and we will help you put an article together in English.

Rich: We would love to get a Premier League fan from every country in the world!

Jack: We’ve got two now - Montenegro and Kuwait so not many more to go!

Rich: Right, that’s all we have time for this week.

Jack: Don’t forget to write your answers to our questions and make a guess at our football phrase in the comments below.

Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football!

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
1-I agree with them. English is important because it's a key to communicate with people all over the world and to get information about different cultures.
2- English is a language of science and provides plenty of sources related what topic you interested. Learning language helps improving human brain.English has been useful for me in many cases like talking with tourists or understanding English written documents at my work.
3- English became a global language because after industrial revolution many developed countries accepted it as an official languages. British people are also maritime nation. They carried their language to many countries all over the world. Spanish,Chinese and Arabic might be more important nowadays but in the far future I think world'll speak a common language like Esperanto.

I think that learn english is important for me because in my job there are many literatures about my area in english. Many people come from USA/Japan to my city for work (I work in an big Iron Ore Mine). All equipaments are north american. But there are few people that know speak english in the company, mainly in the operacional area. Because this know how to comunicate in english can be very good.
Also is very good learn about another culture, another peoples and how they live and think. I want to know many places like UK, Canada, Australia..., and when I learn english I learn too about the culture, this is very important.

At final is excelent "share thoughts" with peoples from worldwide as in this website.

Correct me.
I don't think it's possible to find the opponents of these players' ideas for anyone to be against what the players said. On the other hand, there is an antiglobalist community in every country. The quantity number of antiglobalists differs from state to state and amongst these groups you'll hardly find the proponents of the mentioned point of view among the members of that societies anyone agreeing with this view about English.
England is a country (ok, a part of the country) with the longest football history in the world. Moreover, the football industry in England is one of the most developed in the world. English is necessary to read about football and all the activities connected with football because most of the documents and books are not translated into Russian. I don't want to wait for ages until somebody would translates it. It's possible that one day I will work in the UK because I'm sure that only sky's my limit. English will definitely be important in my future.

It's desirable to know a bit about the British history to answer the third question. The Age of Discovery which began at the end of 15th century started the period of European colonialism. Spain (which had recently began the become a united state after the Aragon and Castile unification), the independent Netherlands, France, Portugal and England (which still hadn't been united with Scotland) discovered and conquered new territories in both Americas, Africa, South Asia and Australia. When the world was fully divided by the European empires, the British one was consisted on of the British India (included current India, Pakistan. Bangladesh, Myanmar), Brunei, Australia and New Zealand, Canada (don't remember forget that the USA were the part of British Empire too), Malta, Cyprus, the Southern part of Africa, Egypt, Sudan, Kuwait, the Maldives, etc.
Look at the quantity of countries! Try to imagine the number of nations, the territory, which was under British control. The British Empire was called the empire on which the sun never sets. After the decolonisation process the UK kept its influence on the former dependent countries. Moreover, it's definitely important that both the UK and the USA were among the winners of both World Wars.
I partly agree with kwesimanifest and elghoul about the growing impact of Chinese and Arabic on the world politics and economics. I'm not so sure in the cases of German, French and Spanish. The last one is popular because it is widespread in the Latin America. However, I can't see the possibilities to be expanded for this language how it will expand in the future.

Hi Shobonenok!

I've made a few corrections to your message in your comment above. The most noticeable error is with articles. Have a look where I've added 'the' and wher I've deleted 'the'. Do you have any questions about this? I changed some sentences to make them sound a little more natural. Have a look at the longer phrases in red that I have written and then look back at yours. Why do you think I changed them?

Hope this helps,

Correct me. I learn English for few reasons. First of all I need it for my job which requires a communication with English-speaking people and a lot of information is available only in English. In my country your wage in my profession may vary more than twice depending whether you know English or not. Second, it is global, you could find any information in English, you could talk English abroad even in non-English country and they would understand you, and even when you need Google Translate to understand something in Dutch, for example, the translation to English would be more accurate than to your native language.
I think that English has become a global language because of a huge role that US plays in global economic and finance. English-speaking London and New York are two global cities and biggest financial centers and that pushed English to its global role after the WWII.
I’m not sure that any language could undermine English in future, but of course, German and Spanish also play a significant role in the modern world.

Hi Liubomyr

Please find a few corrections below:

I learn English for a few reasons. First of all I need it for my job which requires a communication with English-speaking people and a lot of information is available only in English. In my country your wage in my profession may vary more than twice depending whether you know English or not. Second, it is global, you could find any information you want in English, you could talk English abroad even in a non-English country and they would understand you, and even when you need Google Translate to understand something in Dutch, for example, the translation to English would be is more accurate than to your native own language.
I think that English has become a global language because of a the huge role that the US plays in global economics and finance. English-speaking London and New York are two global cities and are the biggest financial centers and that which pushed English to its global role after the WWII.
I’m not sure that any language could undermine English in the future, but of course, German and Spanish also play a significant role in the modern world.

As you can see, many of the corrections are connected to article usage. Apart from that, this is an excellent answer to the question which uses lots of complex vocabulary and grammatical structures. If you've got any questions, just let me know.

It’s funny, because I haven’t visited the web-site for almost a week, and it seems that I choose the right time to visit it again :))) And it also seems that something wrong happened with my points after I took the quiz on page of Abdallah from Kuwait. It looks that I got more than 4000 for that single quiz :)

We've been having a really odd problem with some of the quizzes. I'll correct your score and see if I can work out why the quiz is doing that.

Thanks
