In this week's Premier Skills English podcast, Rich and Jack talk about Wayne Rooney and his incredible goalscoring record and the 'magic' of the FA Cup - is the FA Cup 'magical' or is this just a football cliche? The language focus this week is on football cliches and we have a little video for you to look at. We also have a new football phrase for you to guess and a Premier League prediction for you to make. Language - clichés
In this week's podcast, Jack and Rich spoke a lot about clichés, but what is a cliché? A cliché is a phrase or expression that has been used many, many times and has lost most of its original meaning. They are expressions that should be avoided in creative writing because they sound very uncreative. The word cliché comes from French and means ' the sound of a printing plate', the machine prints the same plate many, many times; always making the same sound. If someone uses a cliché it sounds like they haven't thought about their words very much. Some common clichés that you may see in either a written or spoken form are:
Don't judge a book by its cover.
Every cloud has a silver lining.
Like a child in a sweetshop.
Language - Football Clichés
There are lots of clichés in football. You often hear them from players and managers in interviews after the match. This is understandable, managers and players are paid to play football not to be clever with words and they often have to give interviews seconds after a match. On the other hand, you may also see journalists and TV commentators use clichés. Maybe, people who are paid to talk and write about football should use fewer clichés? What do you think? In the podcast, Jack and Rich gave you five football clichés. Here they are again:

Jack: Where we talk about football and help you with your English.
Jack: What’s happening this week Rich?
Rich: In this week’s show, we’re going to talk about all the latest news from the Premier League, the magic of the Cup and Manchester Utd’s Wayne Rooney.
Jack: Ah yes, last weekend there was a break from the Premier League but Premier League teams were still in action - they were playing in the FA Cup.
Rich: Did you know that it was the oldest football competition in the world? It was first played in 1871!
Jack: That is a long time ago. You must have been just a boy back then, Rich.
Rich: Yes, very funny Jack – what else do we have in this week’s podcast?
Jack: As always, we have a new football phrase for you to guess and a Premier League prediction for you to make - we will have all of that later, but let’s start with this week’s headlines.
Headlines
Rich: Rooney becomes United’s record goalscorer.
Jack: Wayne Rooney scored his 249th goal for the Red Devils as Manchester Utd beat Reading 4-0 to move into the next round of the FA Cup. He’s now scored the same amount of goals as Man Utd legend – Bobby Charlton.
Rich: Bournemouth are beaten by giant killers.
Jack: In the FA Cup last weekend, most Premier League clubs progressed comfortably to the next round but 5 Premier League clubs went out of the competition. Bournemouth were the biggest victims – losing to Millwall who are two divisions and 42 places lower than them in the English league system.
Rich: Premier League players off to Africa.
Jack: Many Premier League stars will be away from their clubs this month as they fly the flag for their countries in the Africa Cup of Nations. Stars like Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, West Ham’s Andre Ayew and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez will be in Gabon playing for Senegal, Ghana and Algeria.
Rich: That’s a great phrase - giant killers. It makes me think of that fairy tale - Jack and the Beanstalk.
Jack: It’s quite a common phrase that is used when a small team beats a big team. When we talk about giant killers though we’re not talking about say Watford beating Manchester Utd against Chelsea - we’re talking about a team from a different division beating a Premier League team.
Rich: That’s right. When Hull City or Watford play Manchester Utd they are the underdog but they’re not a giant killer. That’s an even bigger shock result - like Millwall beating Bournemouth last weekend.
Player of the Week
Jack: There were some great performances last weekend in the cup competitions, especially by players from smaller clubs against Premier League teams. In addition to the Millwall team who knocked out Bournemouth; players from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Derby County should also be proud as they beat Premier League Stoke City and West Brom.
Rich: Yes, those players needed to give 110% to beat Premier League teams, but our player of the week this week goes to a player who has equalled a record that has lasted over 40 years to become the top scorer at one of, if not the biggest, football club in world football.
Jack: That player, of course, is Manchester Utd’s Wayne Rooney.
Rich: Rooney now has 249 goals for Manchester Utd which is the same amount of goals as Sir Bobby Charlton scored between 1956 and 1973. Rooney has taken 215 fewer matches than Charlton to score 249. An amazing achievement.
Jack: Yes, he is certain to break the record soon and is one of the best ever Premier League strikers ...but the best….I’m not sure ...we will leave that for you to decide in the discussion at the bottom of this page.
Language/Topic Focus: The Magic of the Cup
Rich: As we mentioned earlier, Premier League clubs were in action in the FA Cup last weekend. The FA Cup is the oldest cup competition in the world and fans, players, managers and most of all TV presenters often talk about the magic of the FA Cup. But what is this magic? What do you think makes it so special, Jack?
Jack: Mmmmm….I’m not sure. I think one of the reasons is that it’s a cup competition that is open to so many clubs. Teams from the 10th level of English football can enter.
Rich: That is pretty amazing. It means that this season there were 736 teams in the FA Cup. It began back in August long before Premier League clubs start to play in it.
Jack: Yes, the idea that a small village team of postmen, factory and office workers can, theoretically, make the final at Wembley to play against Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester Utd is pretty magical.
Rich: Yes, I agree and over the years this has happened, maybe not in the final, but there are giant killings every year including professional teams losing to amateurs.
Jack: I think the idea of normal players playing against professionals is what makes it special but there are other things, too.
Rich: There are replays a nd penalty shoot-outs - there are often very exciting climaxes to matches because one team has to win - you can’t draw.
Jack: Yes and the final is always at Wembley with half of the tickets for each team - there is a lot of tradition - I think the Queen has been a few times. Did you know that she was an Arsenal fan?
Rich: Really? That must upset her grandson - Prince William. He supports Aston Villa!
Jack: But some people say that the FA Cup isn’t special and that ‘the magic or romance of the cup is just a cliche’.
Rich: Ahh yes, there are lots of cliches in football. A cliche is a phrase that is used a lot and has been used too much.
Jack: And because they’re used so often they lose their original meaning. The phrase ‘the magic of the cup’ is used all the time and has become less powerful maybe it’s just what people say but maybe they don’t really mean it.
Rich: Maybe I’m not sure. It is a cliche but when people think about it more I still think that they think the cup is a bit special.
Jack: Right what we’re going to do now is give you a few more cliches and a little video for you to watch from the BBC.
Rich: And we’ve also got a challenge for you. We want you to listen to the cliches, watch the video and then tell us what you think the cliche means and if you think it is a cliche or not.

Rich: Have you got a football phrase for us this week?
Jack: Yes, I have, but first last week’s football phrase. The phrase was transfer window. The transfer window is the period of time when clubs can buy and sell players. The transfer window closes on the 31st of January.
Rich: Not much activity so far but it usually happens near the end of January. Well done to Aragorn1986 from Montenegro, AssemJuve from Palestine, Kwesimanifest from Ghana, Poui from Laos, Ghigo from Italy, Liubomyr and Alex from Ukraine, MS Aboelsafa from Egypt, Emir from Bosnia, Shobonenok from Russia and Furutaku from Japan - you all got the right answer! What’s this week’s phrase?
Jack: This time the football phrase is just one word: ******. In the FA Cup, if there is a draw the match is played again at the away team’s stadium. This is called a ******. In the past, there could be lots of ******* until there was a winner but these days if the teams are drawing at the end of the ****** there is a penalty shootout.
Rich: Liverpool could only draw with Plymouth last weekend so there will be a ****** next week.
Premier League Prediction
Rich: Last week’s prediction was in the FA Cup and I thought Preston would be the giant killers and beat Arsenal but the Gunners won with a last minute goal from Olivier Giroud - he’s in great form at the moment.
Jack: You thought Arsenal would lose, Rich. No points for you but a point each for me and our listeners we all thought Arsenal would win comfortably. What’s your prediction this week, Rich?
Rich: This week the Premier League is back up and running and I’ll be watching Manchester Utd against Liverpool. I want Liverpool to win but United have been playing really well recently so they might be the favourites especially as Liverpool are without Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho. However, under Jurgen Klopp Liverpool are always dangerous so I’ll be happy with a draw and I think it’ll finish level. Final score: Manchester Utd 1-1 Liverpool
Jack: Sorry Rich, I think Utd are going to win this one. I think they’ll win 1-0.
Rich: Right, that’s all we have time for this week.

What do you think?
1- I’m fan of Rooney, good player however I can't say "best ever striker" of M.Utd. We should evaluate whole history of club.
2- In my opinion; FA Cup is a football feast from which different divisions teams may " take a seat" to participate. Yes. It also happens in my country.

Correct me.
1. I'm not a fan neither Manchester Und nor Wayne Rooney. He is very important for both "red devils" and English national team but I'm not admired by his performance. I'm not sure that he will be able to score 300 goals for United because consistency in scoring goals has never been his quality in my point of view.
2. I love both of the tournaments, but I always enjoy watching games between Premier League teams and smaller ones from the weaker divisions. This also happens in Russia and there was a fantastic achievement of a tiny amateur club "Shakhtar Peshelan" (the fourth division) from a little village where nearly 100 people live. The club's stadium capacity is only 520 seats. This club had qualified to 1/32 of Russian Cup where lost in injury time to "Shinnik Yaroslavl" from Football National League (the second division in Russian football league system).
3. All the mentioned cliches were defined in the previous comments, so, it's nothing for me to add.

3. After 'I guess', you should use 'will' or 'going to': I guess he will score 300 goals...

CORRECT ME The football Phrase is ******. In my opinion Wayne Rooney isn't the best ever stiker of Man Utd. I think that is a a good player a good striker but in my opinion George Best was better then Rooney as a player. I think that Rooney can score more than 300 goals for Man Utd. I like very much both the Premier League and the FA Cup, i like the English fooball. it's very good that also the small teams can play against big teams and sometime the smaller teams can beat the biggest team. In my Country doesn't happen that, this is one of many things because i prefer the English Fooball. CORRECT ME The football Phrase is ******. In my opinion Wayne Rooney isn't the best ever stiker of Man Utd. I think that is a a good player a good striker but in my opinion George Best was better then Rooney as a player. I think that Rooney can score more than 300 goals for Man Utd. I like very much both the Premier League and the FA Cup, i like the English fooball. it's very good that also the small teams can play against big teams and sometime the smaller teams can beat the biggest team. In my Country doesn't happen that, this is one of many things because i prefer the English Fooball. 'at the end of the day' ..... uit's the last thing ‘take each game as it comes’... it's a good philosophy ‘The lads gave 110%’ the Players did the our job and all people of that team are satisfied. ‘Let’s take it one game at a time’ .... its a good point of wiew ‘I’m over the moon’ ....be excited about something that happened

OK there are quite a lot. Please don't be put off, I think that every mistake is a fantastic opportunity to learn!
1. Punctuation: In my opinion, should be followed by a comma.
2. OK - this is quite a normal mistake for Italian speakers. It is possible to use the format "of Manchester United", but it sounds very old fashioned and formal (The Queen of England). It would be much better to say: Manchester United's best ever striker.
3. Missing word - there is no subject in this clause - 'I think that he is a good striker'

I think the FA cup is important as it offers the premier teams an option of meeting a different opposition to toughen themselves for other competition such as champions league.
