Introduction

Jack: Hello my name’s Jack

Rowan: My name’s Rowan

Rich: and I’m Rich and welcome to this week’s Premier Skills English podcast.

Jack: In the Premier Skills English podcast, we talk about football and help you with your English. 

Rowan: And this week’s podcast is a very special podcast, isn’t it Jack?

Jack: Yes, it is because this podcast is Rich’s last ever Premier Skills English podcast because Rich is leaving us.

Rich: Nice music. Well, I’m feeling sad but I’ve had a great time over the last five years writing and hosting the podcast and I really hope that I have helped our listeners with their English.

Rowan: You’ve written more than 700 episodes and we’ve had more than 7 million listens to the podcast so we’ve definitely been doing something right.

Rich: Yes, I hope so and I know that many of our listeners have been listening for a long time so I want to say a big thank you to all of you and thanks for listening. Listen out for the Richard Moon podcast soon! No, I don’t think so, but maybe … who knows!

Jack: So, if you’re not going to do a new podcast the big question is what are you going to do next? Have you got your dream move to Liverpool and we’re going to see you lining up with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane next week?

Rich: I wish but that’s what my final podcast is all about - what I’m going to do next. What’s my new job?

Rowan: In our roleplays this week, Rich tells us what his new job is and because it’s his final podcast we let him talk about some of his favourite words in English - that’s this week’s language focus.

Jack: This week’s podcast comes in three parts. In each part, Rich tells us what his new job is - a different job in each part. After each roleplay, we have a task for you to do.

Rowan: We want you to think of Rich’s career change and try to use some of Rich’s favourite words in English.

Rowan: Lots of our comments this week were on our podcast about GameZero which was the first-ever major net-zero carbon football match that was played between Tottenham and Chelsea.

Rich: OK, I think it’s time to reveal last week’s football phrase and see who got the right answer.

Last Week’s football Phrase

Rich: Right, our football phrase. If you’ve not listened to the podcast before, every week we set our listeners a challenge. We explain a football phrase or word and you have to guess what it is.

Jack: Last week’s football phrase was a brace. Generally, this word is used to describe two of the same thing and comes from shooting – a brace of pistols means two pistols, a brace of birds are two birds that have been shot for food. In football, you can score a brace - two goals in one match. Last weekend, Cristiano Ronaldo and Odsonne Edouard both got a brace for their clubs.

Introduction to Roleplay

Rich: As we said earlier, I’m leaving the Premier Skills English podcast this week so in this week’s roleplays we’re going to look at three jobs that I might possibly do instead.

Jack: You are about to hear this week’s first roleplay. We’ve just found out that Rich is leaving the podcast and we want to find out what he is going to do next. 

Rowan: While you listen we want you to answer a question: What is Rich’s new job?

Roleplay

Jack: Have you heard Rich is leaving?

Rowan: Yes, just this morning. I couldn’t believe it. It was a big surprise. I bet he’s got a big job lined up. Probably doing something in the football industry.

Jack: Do you think? I’m sure he would have said something if he’d found something connected to footie. Here he comes now.

Rowan: Hey, Rich. How’s it going? We’ve heard the news that you’re leaving us.

Rich: Good news travels fast, eh?

Jack: Don’t be a nincompoop - we’re going to miss you. Why didn’t you say anything? 

Rich: Well, I didn’t want to say anything until it was certain. I only got the news that I’d passed all the training last week and then I needed to make sure I was joining - it’s only a temporary contract but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

Rowan: I told you, Jack. You’ve got some kind of football job - as a translator at Liverpool or something.

Rich: Haha! No, it’s nothing to do with footie. You might be a bit surprised actually.

Jack: So, what are you going to do?

Rich: I’m going to be a ringmaster. 

Rowan: A what? A ringmaster?

Jack: Like in the circus. The ringmaster - the master of ceremonies. The guy with the top hat and tails and the whip.

Rich: That’s the one. I’m joining a travelling circus. I don’t use a whip and we don’t have any animals but I will introduce all the acts - trapeze artists, clowns, jugglers, magicians and I do have a shiny new top hat.

Rowan: It’s certainly different …

Rich: Ladies, and gentlemen, boys and girls, roll up, roll up. Welcome to the greatest show on Earth! 

Rich: We have the funniest clowns, amazing acrobats and the most spectacular jugglers in town. Sit back, relax and enjoy. Now, on with the show!

Rowan: Rich, Rich you’re daydreaming. So, are you going to tell us what your new job is? 

Language Focus

Rowan: Before the roleplay, we asked you a question. The question was: What is Rich’s new job?

Jack: Well, the answer is of course a ringmaster. Rich’s new job is to introduce all the acts at the circus and welcome everyone into his big top.

Rowan: A bit of a career change, Rich.

Rich: Not, really Rowan - it’s still voice work just like on the podcast. I’ll have to watch out for the lions though.

Jack: No animals remember at your circus although you might want to avoid the clowns. I always find them a bit scary. 

Rowan: OK, so we’re looking at some of your favourite words this week and you sneaked three of them into this roleplay.

Rich: Yes, I did. I wonder if our listeners spotted them or not. The first word is footie.

Jack: So, you can probably guess this is an informal word for football. Why do you like this word, Rich?

Rich: Well, as you probably all know, I love football but when we’re talking about footie it probably means I’m talking about football with friends or going to play football with friends.

Rowan: Did you watch the footie last night?

Rich: I did. Manchester United got a last-minute winner. They were very lucky.

Jack: What’s the next word that you like from the roleplay, Rich?

Rich: The word is shiny. I described my hat as shiny - it describes something that is bright because it reflects the light. Maybe I’m like a magpie - you know that bird that collects shiny things.

Rowan: It’s a nice sound isn’t it shiny?

Rich: I like the sh- sound and I also like adjectives that end in y because it makes me think that English is simple even though you might not think it is. Think about why we have these adjectives: shiny, dirty, funny, hungry, rainy.

Jack: And one more word from the roleplay, Rich.

Rich: The last word I want to talk about is juggle. I just love the sound of this word - juggle.

Rowan: Can you juggle, Rich?

Rich: With three balls it’s easy and I can juggle with four but I usually drop something after a few seconds.

Jack: So, juggle means to throw things in the air and catch them and repeat. We usually jungle for fun. Clowns at a circus are usually very good jugglers.

Rich: Juggle and juggler - both of them are just great words.

TASK

Jack: Right, it’s time for your task. In the roleplay, you just heard, Rich told us that he’s leaving the Premier Skills English Podcast to be an international super-spy.

Rowan: Rich also told us three of his favourite words.

Rich: We actually have two tasks for you to do. First, we want you to tell us if you think I would be a ringmaster. What kind of qualities do I need to have? What do I need to be good at and what do I need to avoid doing?

Jack: The second task is connected to the three favourite words that Rich spoke about. The words were:

Rowan: Tell us if you knew these words. Are they new for you? Do you like them? Tell us three of your favourite words in English.

Football Phrase

Rich:  This week’s football phrase is **** *****. This phrase describes a player who is not bound by a contract and so can join any team at any time. Clubs often sign **** ****** on short-term deals outside of the transfer window.
