Sport and Inclusion

Sport and Inclusion

In this issue, kids from Greenfield College, a school for children with disabilities, join Five United for football training.

Ipul has an announcement. Next week, some students from Greenfields college are going to come and train here. The kids all look concerned – Hendro says “But Greenfields is for disabled kids”.

The coach says: ‘Football is for everyone – we can all train together.” Hendro is unhappy and the rest of the kids are worried. We’ll have to make some changes to our training, but it will be fun. We can all have a good time. Hendro announces that he’s not going.

Activity 1: In this activity, think about what has happened in the story so far, and think about what the different characters are thinking and why? Choose the answer you think is best, there isn't always a correct answer here.
What are the characters thinking?

Adhi and the team are sitting and talking. Adhi doesn’t want to train with the disabled kids and says it will be a waste of time. Budi says it doesn’t matter and he’s happy to train with anyone. Rini and Santi are a bit worried, but say that they will join in the session. Iwan says he doesn’t know.

Understanding

At the beginning of the story, some of the team are not sure about training with the team from Greenfield College and others are a bit negative. Take a look at these examples and then have a go at the activity to learn some similar phrases.

"It's a waste of time." Adhi reacted negatively to training with the kids from Greenfield College.

"I don't know, it'll be a bit diffferent, won't it?" Iwan wasn't sure about training with the kids from Greenfield College.

Activity 2: In the story there were some different reactions to training with the kids from Greenfield College. In this activity, put the different phrases into the correct categories: positive, negative or neutral.
Can you put each phrase in the correct group?

When the kids from Greenfields arrive, there are 5 of them. Two look very shy, one is on crutches. Two are in wheelchairs. They each have a person to help them. The group leader from Greenfields introduces the kids and the assistants. He says that the kids are shy and sometimes don’t like to join in, but asks people to be patient and to talk to the kids.

Ipul organizes a fitness activity that involves teams competing to complete some kind of activity course. Everyone gets really competitive and has a good time. Iwan says it looks like fun and joins in. Adhi watches from the sideline.

Grammar

the story, Iwan and Adhi used tag questions. We usually use tag questions in spoken language. For example:

"It's not really football training, is it?"

If the main part of the verb is negative (is not), the question tag is positive (is it?).

"It will be a bit different, won't it?"

If the main part of the verb is positive (will be), the question tag is negative (won't it?).

Have a go at the activity below, or check out our Learn English website for a few more of the rules about question tags and some practice activities.

Activity 3: In the story you saw some examples of tag questions. In this activity, try to type the correct question tag at the end of each sentence.
It's not difficult, is it?

At one point one of the kids in the wheelchairs falls over and Rini and Santi look scared, but Budi just helps them back into their chair. They keep on training and have a good time. Adhi is impressed by how well they work together.

Page 7: Adhi learns an important lesson.

The training session ends. The Greenfields kids and assistants are happy but tired. They leave and everyone says goodbye. Five United tell Ipul that it was a great training session. We learnt a lot about teamwork.

I do think Adhi made the right decision. I do think all people with disabilities should be involved, like people who are blind, people in wheelchairs and, people with crutches. We can help involve people with disabilities by not being rude and not knock their confidence.

Yes, he needed this kind of training too.
We involve them when a group of them comes to train with us or we go to their centre for training together

We should not understimate anyone. We all can learn something from each other, no matther who we are. I think people with some kind of disabilities can teach us about courage, strengh, positiveness, teamwork and many other skills that we might not have ever thouht about it due to the fact that we have never had this need before.

That's a good example of inclusion. In this way people with disabilities feel they are needed, which is very important for them. And I do agree that it is a nice activity to train teamwork. Unfortunately, there is not much attention paid to people with disabilities in my country. But I think sport can surely make a difference for them. I can't help admiring people with disabilities who strive for achievements in sports (e.g. the Paralympic games), and I must admit Ukrainians have got pretty much to be proud of.

In my community people with disabilities take part in basketball matches, bowling and darts. There are so many ways to show their talent, only that the social institutions should take care more of them, insure their financial condition and make space for coordination and presence in all social events.

We should all organise competitions, and give all the people with disabilities to improve themselves in many fields, not only in sport activities. But, yes, sport is a great opportunity to show everyone it can be a competitive and interesting event.
