Premier Skills English Podcast 7
Memphis Depay, the Dutch international, has already signed for Manchester United and he is one of the first major transfers of the summer. In this week's podcast, Jack and Rich talk about some other players that could be moving this summer and take a look at the language of speculation and rumour.
How much did you understand?
Jack and Rich used some different phrases to speculate about the future. Listen again and complete the sentences.
Jack: Hello my name’s Jack and welcome to this week’s Premier Skills English podcast.
Rich: Hi everyone. I’m Rich and every week we talk about football and help you with your English.
Jack: What are we going to talk about this week, Rich?
Rich: Well, the summer is here and many of the players and fans will be enjoying a deserved break. But I’ve been wondering what Premier League managers do in the summer.
Jack: I think I can answer that one, Rich. They’re scouting for new players.
Rich: Sorry, scouting? I was in the Scouts when I was younger.
Jack: Ha, very funny! Not the Scouts! To scout is a verb and means to watch players from different teams to see if they would be good for their team.
Rich: Of course, I imagine that there are lots of Premier League managers scouting at the Copa America, looking at players from South America.
Jack: Yes, I’m sure there are. And for us fans, the summer is also an exciting time. The transfer window is open and every day I look at the football news and see that we have been linked with another player or two.
Rich: Yes, there are always lots of rumours flying around in the summer.
Jack: What’s a rumour, Rich?
Rich: Ah yes, well, a rumour is some information that lots of people talk about that might or might not be true. I read this morning that Radamel Falcao might move to Chelsea.
Jack: Really? That’s an interesting rumour. I think he would be great for them. So when we talk about rumours we often use the word might because we don’t know if the information is true or not.
Rich: Yes, that’s right.
Jack: Can you give us another example?
Rich: Well, I’ve heard that Lionel Messi might sign for Liverpool.
Jack: Really, Rich. I’m not sure about that one!
Rich: Maybe, maybe not. Who knows?
Jack: Right, our challenge for listeners this week is to tell us a rumour that you’ve heard or read about.
Rich: Can you tell us which players might move to the Premier League during the summer? Which players might change clubs?
Jack: Write your answers in the comments section below and see if you can be the first with your rumour.
Rich: Well that’s all for now. Thanks for listening.
Jack: If you’re listening to this on itunes or elsewhere, come back to Premier Skills English for some language activities, a quiz and lots more. You can find us at www.britishcouncil.org/premierskillsenglish.
Rich: Don’t forget if you sign in, you can score points to see if you can get your club, your country and your name to the top of our leaderboard.
Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

I rarely follow rumors in the transfer window. Many of them aren't correct. I prefer waiting until everything is confirmed.

As someone mentioned before, there seem to be some issues with the transcript. I ended up correcting it to help out a student of mine, so I might as well post the corrected version here:

Jack: Ha, very funny! No, not the Boy Scouts! To scout is a verb and it means to look for something in different places. So, when managers are scouting, they are travelling around to watch players from different teams to try to find the next star player.
Rich: Of course. I imagine that there are lots of Premier League managers scouting at the Copa America, looking at players from South America.
Jack: The word scout is also a noun and is short for talent scout. These are people whose job (it) is to travel around and search for new players.
Rich: Players of local clubs get very excited when they hear that there might be a scout watching.
Jack: Yes and I’m sure there are lots of young players hoping to impress the scouts and managers at the Copa America.
Rich: For us fans, the summer is also an exciting time. The transfer window is open and every day I read the football news online to see which players might be coming to Liverpool and the Premier League. There are always lots of rumours flying around in the summer.

It seems there are some problems with the transcript.
missing word:
Jack: Ha, very funny! Not the 【Boy】Scouts! To scout is a verb and means to watch players from different teams to see if they would be good for their team.
Also three or four sentences are missing.

I've heard that Steven Gerrard announced that he might join Liverpool again, to play his last football season. Now, he is with the American club LA Galaxy. Isn't He ? Rich, That's true? (see the site web : metronews.fr). The 'transfer window' is same of 'mercato' ?

Hi Haydi,
Gerrard has said that this season will be his last so I would be surprised if he returned to Liverpool to play, but you never know! When he finishes the season with LA Galaxy I think he would love to return to Liverpool as a coach, and in the future maybe even as manager. I think all Liverpool fans would love to see him back at the club.
My French is not that great so after asking Google Translate for a little help I discovered that 'foot mercato' is the same as the 'transfer window' in English. I think 'mercato' on its own is 'market' in Italian? But maybe, in context, you can just use 'mercato' to mean 'transfer window' in French?
Thanks for your comment Haydi.
