The Chelsea breakfast club
Why do children not have breakfast at home?
Why don’t children have breakfast at home and how are Chelsea FC involved? Well, in many cases both parents have to start work very early and aren’t able to give their children breakfast at home. In others there are personal or financial difficulties.
As a result Chelsea have set up a series of breakfast clubs with the local council in five local schools. In fact, over half of the primary schools in the area run these programmes.
What is a Chelsea FC breakfast?
First the food itself. The children’s breakfast is made up of cereal, toast, fruit and dairy foods like milk and yoghurt. This selection is based on the Chelsea first team’s diet because the programme is designed by the same people – called nutritionists – who make sure that Chelsea’s Premier League stars are eating the best food for a winning performance.
Why is it so popular?
The children also have a Chelsea-branded sticker book to record their attendance. Children who attend regularly and arrive on time get a medal, a certificate and gifts from Chelsea FC at an awards ceremony. Some can even visit the Chelsea training ground and meet stars such as Petr Čech.
Why is breakfast so important?
We asked the food expert – Chelsea Football Club Nutritionist, Nick Broad. ‘Without a doubt breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Fruit and cereal provide a continuous release of energy and eating them regularly improves concentration and mental functioning. In addition, vitamins, minerals and calcium are essential for growing bodies. A healthy breakfast is a good habit to get into at an early age.’
More than food on the menu
Schools say that pupils settle in to the day, work harder and learn better if they have something nourishing to eat and drink in the morning. Teachers have said that children really are more focused in class and that concentration levels have improved. ‘Since the clubs began the pupils are at school on time – some are even early!’ said one teacher.
Let's leave the last word to Chelsea 'keeper, Petr Cech
‘It’s really important that kids get a good start in the morning; it helps them at school as well as making them healthier. Whether you are a professional footballer or a pupil at school, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.’

Yes, the Chelsea Breakfast Club is an excellent idea. It addresses two key issues: ensuring that children start their day with a nutritious meal and promoting better concentration and performance in school. I try to maintain a healthy diet by eating balanced meals with fruits, vegetables, proteins, and grains. It’s important to ensure that the body gets all the necessary nutrients for energy and mental focus, just like the Chelsea nutritionist mentioned. For breakfast, I usually have something simple but healthy, like cereal or toast with fruit and yogurt, similar to what’s offered at the Chelsea Breakfast Club. Sometimes, I’ll also have eggs for added protein.

Yes, it's a good idea but sadly we don't have something similar here. I try hard to have a healthy diet but I can't say I have one. I usually have a cheese sandwich and cup of milk for breakfast.

This is a good idea, because children have to know that the breakfast is hte most important meal at day, and they can be more involved if who say it is a football star.

Many players recently recognized the importance of healthy diet and avoiding some ingredients in the food. Now we have gluten free food for example. And they keep experimenting because they are aware of the importance of giving your body exactly what it needs to get the highest performances out of it. We are all very different and we should find food we are not allergic at and use it properly.

I think the Chelsea Breakfast it's a example to follow, it's a great job. I'm from Brasil and in my country we have similar projects in schools where kids don't have breakfast at home, sometimes is the only meal that they have during all the day. I think I have a healthy diet, I normally eat milk, fruits and cereals in my breakfast.

I would like to applaud Chelsea for their remarkable job. But, i would like to take it further. For instance, in Africa, we dont have this type of nutritions, breakfast in the school. in fact the meal of the day is tough, but yet we are strong and full of energy. However, the concentration and focus level thats what we are missing.

I have a ideal, breakfast is very important for everyone, especially for children. The children need much energy to start a day, teachers in primary schools have to explain the role of breakfast to parents.
I hope Chelsea FC will set up a same program in Viet Nam as soon as possible.
