Sergio "Kun" Aguero

Manchester City's new badge.

Is Agüero the best striker in the Premier League?

Manchester City fans will be hoping that Sergio Agüero is on form again this season. Since signing for City in 2011, Agüero has scored 102 Premier League goals in just 150 matches. Agüero has the best scoring ratio in the history of the Premier League, he scores a goal, on average, every 107 minutes. This is better than every striker to have played in the Premier League, including; Thierry Henry (122), Ruud van Nistelrooy (128) and Alan Shearer (146). Only Shearer (129 matches) got to 100 goals faster than Agüero (147) and of players who are still in the Premier League only Sunderland's Jermain Defoe (143) and Manchester Utd's Wayne Rooney (193) have more Premier League goals to their names. He's one of only five players to score five goals in a Premier League match and he's got more Premier League goals than any other South American. If City are going to win the Premier League this season they will want this man to be hitting the back of the net!

Where is he from?

Sergio 'Kun' Agüero was born on 2 June 1988 in Quilmes, Argentina. His first club was Independiente. He made his début for the first team when he was only 15 – the youngest footballer to play in the Primera División. He moved to Europe and Atlético Madrid in 2006. His goal-scoring partners there were Fernando Torres and Diego Forlán. He scored 101 goals for the Colchoneros in five seasons. His lethal finishing attracted the attention of lots of clubs and Manchester City bought him from Atlético in July 2011.

Agüero's nickname 'Kun' is from his favourite TV programme as a child.

What has he won?

Aguero celebrates goal number 2.

Kun Agüero had a sensational first game for Manchester City. He came on against Swansea and scored two goals and assisted David Silva for another in a 4-0 win. But he will be remembered forever by City fans for the last match of that season. Manchester City needed to beat Queens Park Rangers to take the title. The game was in the 94th minute and the score was 2-2. Mário Balotelli passed to Agüero who calmly put the ball in the net. City had won their first title since 1968. Since then, Agüero has led City to one more Premier League title, which they won in 2013/14.

Has he played for Argentina?

Agüero and teammates celebrate reaching the World Cup Final.

Agüero made his début for Argentina against Brazil (0-3) at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium in 2006 and has made 77 appearances for his country and scored 33 goals. He helped Argentina reach the 2014 World Cup Final in Brazil, which they eventually lost to Germany 1-0 after extra-time. Argentina have won the Copa América 14 times, the Confederations Cup once and the World Cup twice, in 1978 and 1986. Argentina have what some consider to be the best player ever: Diego Maradona. Others consider another Argentinian to be the best ever player: Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Have many Argentinians played in the Premier League?

Apart from Kun Agüero, there are a few other Argentinians that play in Manchester or have played in Manchester. Do you know who is or was Agüero's teammate and who has played for city rivals Manchester United? One of them has even played for both teams!

Martin Demichelis Sergio Romero
Pablo Zabaleta Marcos Rojo
Carlos Tevez Angel Di Maria

Agüero greets fans at the Etihad.

There are many other Argentinians that play in the Premier League, including; Leonardo Ulloa at Leicester City, Erik Lamela at Spurs and Manuel Lanzini at West Ham. Many famous Argentinians have also played in the Premier League in the past including Carlos Tevez (West Ham, Man Utd and Man City), Javier Mascherano (West Ham and Liverpool) Maxi Rodriguez (Liverpool) and Juan Sebastian Veron (Man Utd and Chelsea).

This is not a new thing. In 1978, recent World Cup champions Osvaldo 'Ossie' Ardiles and Ricardo 'Ricky' Villa played for Tottenham. They were very successful and proved that foreign footballers could play in England.

  • Sergio Aguero has scored 102 goals in the Premier League. Of current players, only Jermaine Defoe (143) and Wayne Rooney (193) have scored more.

  • Agüero is still a fan of his first club, Independiente.

  • Agüero has a tattoo of his name in 'Tengwar', a language invented by Tolkien, who wrote The Lord of the Rings.

  • Before 2012, Man City had only won two league titles (1937 and 1968).

  • In the last five seasons, City have finished 3rd, 1st, 2nd, 1st and 2nd.

  • Back in 1998, City were a third level league club.

I think Aguero was a top scorer in the Premier League, it's a shame he had to retire due ill health.
My favourite striker is Mbappe, because he's too good! He's only 23, in the Champions League and a top scorer.

You have right about Bony, he is certainly one great striker. He had shown us that in situations when Aguero was absent, but IMHO I think that he made mistake when he moved from Swansea to Manchester City. Obviously he will always be in the shadow of Aguero and in the other case if he has stayed at Swansea he would become an Swansea's legend. It's Not All About Money ;)

I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with you there. At first, it's obvious which shirt Fabregas is wearing now, but 'why'- that's crucial question. IMHO you haven't chosen good example for comparison, because Fabregas has played for Arsenal and Barcelona(maybe best club in the world) and has won the trophies in Barcelona and London. IMHO he had moved from Barcelona to Chelsea to spend a lot of time onto the pitch and to earn a tremendous amount of money, because if his primary target was earning trophies he should sit on the Barcelona's bench and lift the trophy on the end of season. Secondly: If you can just imagine that Swansea stay instead of Leicester now. Nobody on the beginning of the season could predict this scenario(Leicester's first position) and nobody know what's gona happen in the future. That's only my opinion mate, maybe I'm wrong.

Rema, thanks for your comments! But let me explain the example I've chosen for comparison. Earning trophies playing on the pitch to make a difference even for such a brilliant team as Barcelona is one thing, but earning trophies siting on the bench feeling that you didn't actually deserve any of those trophies is another story. He'd got plenty of pitch time but desperately lacked trophies (only 2 and not the highest ones) over his Arsenal career. For the first year at Stamford Bridge he has already earned 2, including the league title, with a pretty high assist rate meaning he played a key role in his team's success. It's very important for a footballer to get the reward when you perform well. He was very good at playing for Arsenal but didn't won too much. He had lots of trophies with Barca but his pitch time was limited. Last season he was consistently making a huge contribution to his team performance and got the reward he was eager for. Obviously, he had his pay increased, but I think money was the third priority to drive his decision to move to Chelsea after pitch time and top-tier trophies.

I know that he's the obvious choice but to score 4 goals in any Premier League game is amazing, and to score for a team that hadn't won all season is sensational.Who would you choose? There were some great performances last week. Wijnaldum's teammate is Aleksandar Mitrovic who I haven't seen much of this season. Do you think he's a good buy for Newcastle?

I totally agree with you, Georginio Wijnaldum at Newcastle is certainly the player of the week. Mitrović is good buy for Newcastle, he scored last week goal. Steve McClaren believes to him and gives him space in forward. After bad start I think that's better days coming on St James' Park. Mitrović is strong striker, with a sense for scoring goals, but he's so impulsive and he sometimes show bad behaviour what have for results few yellow and one red card. If he could control his temper he could become one of the best striker in Premier League.

I haven't answered you in the right time so it's obviously late for my prediction for this match. But we can discuss about that subject. Leicester are in great form and we can see that if we look on the league table. Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy are playing unbelievable(also the rest of the team have played great). Vardy equalled the record Van Nistelrooy(this is record for scoring in 10 consecutive Premier League matches) by scoring in Leicester's 3-0 victory over Newcastle at St James' Park last weekend. Something interesting: Vardy can break this record in the next match against Manchester United(former Van Nistelrooy's club).

Did you know that Ruud Vaan Nistelrooy has set his record of scoring in 10 consecutive matches against the same team - The Magpies (It seems like Newcastle have become the provider of record-breaking opportunities for other teams))) I feel very excited about this weekend's fixture: in-form Foxes vs striving-for-leadership Red Devils. But I haven't seen your prediction in the comments feed. Will you follow your head like Rich and predict a Man Utd win, or you will gamble to bet on Leicester's victory (and Vardie's record-breaking), or you will be diplomatic stating it will end up with a draw?)

The origins of this nickname(The Tractor Boys) aren't certainly know. I found data that that nickname accepted for the first time when Ipswich Town were played against Leeds, and they were won this game with 2:1. After defeat Leeds United fans start with chanting: '' We're being beaten by a bunch of tractor drivers''.

The region around Ipswich is well-known for agriculture, which would be why the Leeds fan's chanted this!

A couple of years ago, when I was reading about Man Utd's history I found out that George Best managed to score six in one match. It was in the FA Cup match against Northampton Town in 1970.

Yes, Rema this is quite sad story. He was a colourful character in the football World, some people considered him as even better than Pele or Maradona. Due to problems with alcohol he gave up football on the highest level when he was just 27.

I think that answer on second question isn't good. Five players have scored five goals in one game in the Premier League, not four.

You're welcome! I think something else isn't good. Accent is on the word net which is linked with some economic explanations(gross and net) and this words does not corresponding with this lesson. For this lesson I think that adequate explanation would be: The net is the area surrounded by a piece of material made from string into which a ball or puck is put in order to score points in various sports.
