In This Week, Jack and Rich talk about all of the weekend's action in the Premier League; the big headlines and the main talking points. We also ask you to get involved; do you agree with Jack and Rich's choices of best player, best team and best match of Matchweek 29? Make your prediction for next week's big match and tell us how your club or fantasy football team is doing. We welcome comments from all football fans and especially welcome comments from football fans who are learning English.

Introduction

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our Monday round-up section on Premier Skills English.

Jack: Hi there. I’m Jack. Every Monday we discuss last weekend’s action, the best players, the best matches, Fantasy Football, and make some predictions for next weekend.

Rich: We want you to practise your English and interact with Premier League fans from around the world in our comments section.

Jack: You can do this on the Premier Skills English website or the Premier Skills-British Council Facebook page - if that’s where you are listening to us.

Rich: There were some superb matches in Matchweek 29, so let’s get on with this week’s round-up!

Headlines

Rich: City march on after win against Chelsea.

Jack: A first-half strike by Bernardo Silva was enough to give City all three points against an ultra-defensive Chelsea. Chelsea didn’t shoot once in the first half and failed to have shot on target in the entire match.

Rich: Liverpool up to second after Salah scores again.

Jack: Liverpool moved up to second place in the Premier League after a 2-0 win against Newcastle. Mohamed Salah scored his 24th Premier League goal of the season just before half-time and Sadio Mane got the second the other side of the interval.

Rich: Brighton add to Arsenal’s problems.

Jack: Brighton beat Arsenal for the first time since 1982 to ease their relegation fears as Arsenal continue to struggle. It’s the first time in 15 years that the Gunners have lost four games in a row.

Rich: What about that Chelsea performance against City? Were you surprised to see them being so defensive?

Jack: Well, I’m not sure. They’d just seen Arsenal lose when trying an attacking strategy. It’s just very, very difficult to stop City at the moment.

Definition Alert!

Rich: Sadio Mane got the second the other side of the interval. The interval? What is this?

Jack: The interval is the 15-minute break that teams have at half-time. The word interval is also used to describe a break at the theatre.

Rich: We can also say the break. It’s 1-1 at the break. This is probably more common than interval when talking about football.

Jack: The most common way to describe it though is just half-time. The score at half-time is 1-1.

Activity Week

Rich: Before we move on we’d like to tell you about our new activity week on Premier Skills English. It’s a free series of lessons designed to help you with your English and you can sign up for it now on our homepage.

Jack: Just go to the website and look for the live tab at the top of the page. You can sign up for last week’s activity week about health and fitness to give you an idea what it’s all about.

Rich: And you can also sign up for next week’s Activity Week which going to be all about films. This Activity Week will start on Monday the 12th of March. We would love to see you there!

Matchweek Awards

Rich: Right, every Monday, we give out three Matchweek awards. Player of the Week, Team of the Week and Match of the Week.

Jack: In the comments section, you need to tell us if you agree with our choices …

Rich: These awards always create a lot of discussion. Last week lots of you agreed with our choices like Khaldoun83 from Algeria who said that he totally agree with all our choices.

Jack: But not all of you agreed. Giovi from Poland the Match of the Week should have been Bournemouth against Newcastle which was a 2-2 thriller.

Rich: Let’s see who agrees and disagrees with our choices this week. Write your opinions on our facebook page or on the website.

Jack: Let’s start with our Player of the Week. There were some great individual performances in the Premier League last week.

Rich: Leroy Sane has been in brilliant form for City, Riyad Mahrez scored a great free-kick for Leicester and Sadio Mane was brilliant for Liverpool.

Jack: But our Player of the Week is Tottenham’s Son Heung-min. Son scored both goals in Spurs’ 2-0 win against Huddersfield and the South Korean is in fantastic form at the moment.

Rich: Right our next award is for Team of the Week. There were good wins for City, Liverpool, Spurs, Brighton, Burnley and Watford but our team of the week is Swansea City.

Jack: The Swans beat West Ham 4-1 and they are now up to 13th place in the Premier League.

Rich: Swansea have won seven matches in a row since their new manager, Carlos Carvahal, arrived in December. They were bottom when he arrived, so it’s been a great turnaround.

Jack: Finally, what about Match of the Week?

Rich: It’s a difficult one this week but let’s go with Brighton against Arsenal. The Seagulls are now up to 10th place which is very impressive.

Fantasy Football

Rich: What’s been happening in Fantasy Football this week, Jack?

Jack: The top scoring player in Matchweek 28 so far is Son Heung-min with 16 points. Where is the Premier Skills team in the Premier Skills Fantasy football league?

Rich: We’ve still in 13th place but we’ve got David De Gea and Paul Pogba to play in Manchester Utd’s late match against Crystal Palace so we might pick up some more points.

Jack: Our Fantasy Football Premier Skills Team of the Week is West Tam FC managed by Zulkifli Fadli, a West Ham fan from Indonesia. Zulkifli has got 72 points this week so well done to you!

Matchweek Prediction

Jack: Rich - your prediction for Matchweek 29 was for City to beat Chelsea 2-0 and they won 1-0 so another good prediction.

Rich: Yes, I’m getting good at this! It wasn’t just me though. Khaldoun83 from Algeria and Giovi from Poland also predicted a win for City!

Jack: Let’s see if you can do it again. What’s your prediction for Matchweek 30?

Rich: The big match in Matchweek 30 has to be Manchester Utd against Liverpool. Both teams are up near the top of the table, but this match is worth more than three points to the fans due to the intense rivalry between them. Both teams are in pretty good form in the Premier League but it’s Liverpool that have been playing the better football - only Manchester City have scored more than the Reds this season. Jose Mourinho would prefer a defensive match, but I can’t see them stopping a front three of Salah, Mane and Roberto Firmino. Final score: Manchester Utd 1-2 Liverpool.

Jack: You seem to think that Liverpool will win this one easily. I’m not so sure and I think United will win 1-0. We want you to make your prediction at the bottom of the page. Are you a good predictor?

Rich: Right, that’s all we have time for. I hope you have enjoyed this football round-up.

Jack: Remember to check out the Premier Skills English homepage to keep an eye out for our new activity week on the language of films! Registration will be open on Thursday!

Rich: And don’t forget to join the discussion at the bottom of the page. And if you’ve enjoyed this podcast why not leave a rating or review and that will help other people find us.

Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

I agree with all your choices. I'd like to add that Heung Min Son is a really great football player. I get the impression that sometimes he is underrated. I watched him live and his pace and movement impressed me, fantastic player.
My prediction is 1-1.

Hello MG23
Thanks for writing to me.
I think all teams in our group are on a similar level and matches will be really tight. Details may decide about the final results.
My prediction is a goal draw 1-1. I hope both Poland and Columbia will come out of the group. During the last World Cup Columbia and James Rodriguez impressed me and it was the team I supported.
And what is your prediction MG23?
Greetings

1. Son is on form. Probably and hopefully he will achieve a great end this season just like the previous. I am sure he will be up for the World Cup in Russia.

2. Absolutely yes for Swansea City both this week and as it was said in the podcast since the new manager had been appointed.

3. Sorry for the gunners whose game was good albeit it was an historical loose.

Prediction, United 1 Liverpool 1

1. I think we would not have seen such a great form from Harry Kane this season, if not a prodigy at number “7”. The beginning of the spring is for Tottenham and Swansea Koreans, Heung-Min Son and Sung-Yong Ki;)
2. Absolutely agree about Swansea City as a team of the weak. I could even imagine how hard it was for Carlos Carvalhal to make players believe in themselves being at the bottom. An incredible transformation of “an ugly duck” into a “swan” that is confident in its strength!
3. I think the best match was played yesterday between Crystal Palace and ManUtd. After 2:0 I have no doubts that "The Eagles" will win. But what a comeback! What a Nemanja! Nemanja scores rarely, but does it with taste:)
4. Even not playing this week in the Champions League, ManUtd has no any chances against the attacking trio “FMS”. But they will score their goal of prestige.
5. So important goal from Mahrez, a wizard! Despite the latest team results, I am glad that the players do not fall in spirit (I’m about snowball game from Ndidi:) March will be for Foxes!

-Regardless the good performance of Heung Min Son, I think Mohammed Salah is doing well this season. So, I think he deserves to be the best player of the week but when it comes to match of the week and team of the week I agree with you.

-My prediction to match week 30 I think it'll finish with a goalless draw. Manchester United 0-0 Liverpool.

Hello everyone
On this week I watched only one game #MCICHE and this was so boring! I fall to sleep at second half, Blues doing nothing and City play hypnotized tiki-taka uah!
In next week Liverpool will take 3 ponts I think and score at least 2 goals. My prediction is 1-2

Hi there

Respectfully dear, Manchester match was not boring I think. It was so tactical actually, I have to tell you that Pep Guardiola just hold possession because it was part of his tactic and he is aware of injury in this late month. So he didn't keeps pressure on Chelsea's goal!
