Linking words together

Linking words together

In this week's Premier Skills English podcast, the main focus was on speaking skills and taking a long turn. However, we also spoke about the importance of linking words. On this page, we are going to take a closer look at some different types of linking words.

Premier Skills English Podcast: Speaking Exams - The long turn.

Here are some examples of linking words from this week's podcast:

The fans in the cafe are all in yellow, but I don’t think it’s Brazil, although they might be watching a match in Brazil.

In the photo at the top, there are fans watching a match on TV whereas in the other photo they are at the stadium.

Linking Words

In the podcast, we looked mainly at linking words to compare and contrast ideas and images. However, there are other ways we can use linking words, too.

When you are telling a story, a personal anecdote or comparing photographs in exams linking words can be very useful. You can use them in lots of different ways. Below, you can see three ways we often use linking words:

  1. To show reasons and causes
  2. To compare and contrast information
  3. To show the order or sequence of events

Here are six sentences about football. In each of them, the linking words are in blue. Read the sentences and then try to match the linking words with the rules above.

Manchester City scored a consolation goal in the 89th minute, but Liverpool had already scored four without reply.

Belgium and Portugal have never won the World Cup. However, they are amongst the favourites to win the World Cup this summer.

The manager had already made three substitutions so the team had to play the rest of the match with ten players.

Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona, Jamie Vardy, N'golo Kante and Luka Modric are players who were told they couldn't be footballers because they were too small.

Players and managers often have to give interviews to the media after a match.

When players take a penalty they need to be relaxed and confident.

Activity 1: It's a good idea to use linking words because it makes your language more complex. We use different linking words for different things.
Can you match the linking word to the rule?

Activity 2: In this activity, take a look at the different linking words and decide how they should be used.
Put the linkers in the right group.

There is a possibility, all the premier league matches might be cancelled because of covid-19 events seen at the players.
I don’t like to go shopping because I’m always bored by waiting someone while shopping.
Since I began to follow British Council lessons on internet, I improved my English knowledge and writing sentences practice .

He was talent and beneficial football player however he had been transferred to an another team.
Although she/he has no feet she/he plays in National amputee football team.
Despite lockdown some people go for a walk. I can’t understand the reason of this attitude.

I’ve recently read a book related to medieval the title was impressive whereas the content was boring.

When I walk and make work-out I really feel very well.
While I was walking I saluted an old man but he even didn’t look me then I realised that he wasn’t hearing .
Researches proved that after getting up in the morning human brain open to learn easy and fast.
Referee missed the second goal which has been scored at the off-side position. But V.A.R caught it.

I remember the linking words with the phrase FANBOYS.We use them to join words, phrases and clauses; and they're rules to follow.

another linking words that we can use in our conversations are:
whereby, before, while, which, where, what, even though.
(some people establish this site whereby we can learn english.)

We use as and since to show reasons and causes, whereas at some time we might use them to put in order. For example, 'As time passed, it seemed like that Liverpool would lose the game against Swansea' and 'Liverpool hasn't won any Premier League champion since season 1989-1990' Is that right?

Hi Lakerwang

Yes, you're using both words correctly in those examples although I might have said something like 'As the clock ticked towards the 90-minute mark ....'

It's always nice to pick up a few new phrases!

Correct me.

I really like PSE's page so much BECAUSE every time I come along to this website, my English becomes better and better by learning; new vocabularies, phrases and other interesting stuffs.

Reflecting the fact that I'm a Liverpool fan, SO I hope if I could enjoy a matchday experience at Anfield one day and it'd be the icing on the cake if it came in the late stages of the CL!

I think there will be no domestic title left for the rest of the PL teams to win by the end of this campaign as the Citizens will have won the treble. HOWEVER, nothing can be guaranteed in this crazy game!

Chelsea board of directors have let Antonio Conte down by not strengthening the squad by the players he want, BUT that doesn't mean he can't be blamed especially for releasing his goalscorer of the title-winning season.

WHEN I see KDB playing, I always wonder how on earth Mourinho couldn't realise the talent that this guy has got? I think the special one, or the only one, as he prefers to be called, is regretting it now.

Finally, I must thank teacher Jack and teacher Rich AFTER they provided us with this fantastic task and other numerous activities to help us improve our English.

Hi Ahmed Adam

Thanks for your positive feedback!

You've used all the linking words perfectly and I really like how you have used CAPITAL LETTERS to show us where you are using them. In fact, in this week's podcast, we are going to ask everybody to do the same thing in the task that we have for you all. Thanks for the fantastic idea!
