Introduction
Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our Monday round-up section on Premier Skills English.
Jack: Hi there. I’m Jack. Every Monday we discuss last weekend’s action, the best players, the best matches, Fantasy Football, and make some predictions for next weekend.
Rich: We want you to practise your English and interact with Premier League fans from around the world in our comments section.
Jack: You can do this on the Premier Skills English website or the Premier Skills-British Council Facebook page - if that’s where you are listening to us.
Rich: There were some brilliant games in Matchweek 16 so let’s get on with this week’s roundup!
Headlines
Rich: Derby joy for City!
Jack: Manchester City beat their City rivals, United by two goals to one to extend their lead at the top of the table to eleven points. David Silva struck first for City but Marcus Rashford equalised just before half-time. Nicolas Otamendi got the winner for City in the second half. City have now won fourteen Premier League matches in a row. A Premier League record!
Rich: Teams at the top drop points.
Jack: Manchester Utd were not the only team to drop points at the top of the table. Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal all failed to win at the weekend. The Chelsea result was the biggest surprise - the Blues lost 1-0 to West Ham! It was only the third win of the season for the Hammers.
Rich: Rooney rescues a point for Everton in Merseyside Derby.
Jack: Wayne Rooney scored his first goal in a Merseyside Derby thirteen years after playing in his first Liverpool - Everton match. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring but Rooney scored from the spot in the 77th minute to equalise for the Toffees.
Definition Alert!
Jack: Rooney scored from the spot. To score from the spot. What does this phrase mean?
Rich: To score from the spot means to score a penalty. The spot we are talking about here is the penalty spot.
Jack: Sometimes we call a penalty kick a spot kick. What did you think to Rooney’s penalty for Everton?
Rich: It was never a penalty. A very disappointing end to the Merseyside Derby Liverpool should have won the match easily!
Matchweek Awards
Rich: Right, every Monday, we give out three matchweek awards. Player of the Week, Team of the Week and Match of the Week.
Jack: In the comments section, you need to tell us if you agree with our choices …
Rich: Last week it was good to see that lots of you agreed with our choices of matchweek awards. Let’s see if you agree with our choices this week.
Jack: These awards always create a lot of discussion. Let’s start with our Player of the Week. There were some great individual performances in the Premier League last week.
Rich: Yes, there were. Mohamed Salah was good for Liverpool, the West Ham defence were outstanding against Chelsea. Heung Min Son and Riyad Mahrez were great for Spurs and Leicester and Jermaine Defoe for Bournemouth and Harry Kane for Tottenham were brilliant up front for Bournemouth and Spurs.
Jack: But we think we have to give our Player of the Week to a Manchester City player so our Player of the Week for Matchweek 16 is … Nicolas Otamendi.
Rich: The Argentinian defender was fantastic at the back for City and he popped up with the winning goal too!
Jack: He’s scored more goals than any other defender in the Premier League this season! Right, shall we move on to the next award?
Rich: Our next award is for Team of the Week. There were good wins for City, West Ham, Leicester, Swansea, Spurs, Huddersfield and Burnley. And our Team of the Week is West Ham Utd!
Jack: The Hammers beat Chelsea 1-0 to give David Moyes his first victory as West Ham manager. It’s always difficult to win when you are near the bottom of the table so a win against the Premier League Champions is a great result.
Jack: Finally, what about Match of the Week?
Rich: Our Match of the Week this week is … Newcastle v Leicester. A 3-2 thriller that finished in a win for the Foxes who are starting to climb the Premier League table.
Fantasy Football
Rich: What’s been happening in Fantasy Football this week, Jack?
Jack: The top scoring player in matchweek 16 was Tottenham’s Heung Min Son with 16 points. Did you have him in your team?
Rich: He wasn’t in the Premier Skills team who had a very bad week - only 24 points in total and drop down to second in the Premier Skills league.
Jack: The new leader is Team A managed by Ayan Das Gupta from India. Well done to you!
Rich: The Premier Skills Fantasy Premier League Manager of the Week for Matchweek 16 is Gerardo Lopez from Mexico - last year’s Premier Skills fantasy manager of the season.
Jack: His team, Los 11 impostores, scored 73 points last week.
Matchweek Prediction
Jack: Last week’s prediction was the two derby matches between Liverpool and Everton and Manchester City and Manchester United. You didn’t get either result right, Rich?
Rich: No, I thought Liverpool and United would win but City won and Liverpool - Everton finished in a draw.
Jack: But some of our listeners made better predictions. For example, Lakerwang from China and Elghoul from Algeria both predicted wins for Manchester City and Khladoun83 from Algeria also predicted the right result a 2-1 win for City. Well done to you! What match are you looking at this week, Rich?
Rich: There are two Matchweeks this week with Matchweek 17 being played in midweek. I’m going to concentrate on Matchweek 18 that will be played at the weekend. The big match is Manchester City v Tottenham. City are on the best run in Premier League history after winning 14 matches in a row and are looking unstoppable. But, they have a difficult match this weekend and I fancy Spurs to get something from this match. Spurs always play well in the big games and City’s run has to end soon so I’m going to go for a draw in a high-quality match. Final score: Manchester City 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Jack: I can’t see City dropping points at the moment. I think City will win 3-1.
Rich: We’ll see … we want you to make your prediction at the bottom of the page on the website. Are you a good predictor?
Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for. I hope you have enjoyed this Monday round-up. Don’t forget to join the discussion at the bottom of this page.
Rich: Also, if you want to improve your English, take a look at our weekly podcast. There is a link on the side of this page.
Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

We agree that Nicolas Otamendi should be player of the week but, we can't be sure since we were not actually able to see him play last week. We agree that West Ham should have been team of the week because they had a great match coming from behind to win. The best game match was deffinitely Newcastle v Leicester!!! As for the big match between Manchester City and Tottenham, we agree with Jack who predicted a 3-1 Wind for Manchester City. Our fantasy football team is doing as well as we can expect, we are new at playing fantasy football and are learning as we go!!

Correct me
Once again, I agree with your choices of the last gameweek awards. However, for the Citizens vs Spurs game, I think Man City will run out 3-2 winners. This winning streak will soon be broken as the congested fixtures of the Boxing Day are getting under way!
Before the two teams walked to the players tunnel, I noticed that the nickname of the leaders is written as "Cityzens" not "Citizens". so, have I been using the wrong nickname?
Squad rotating is a good thing since it can help to reduce players injuries, but I don't think every Liverpool fan was happy with the team selection that Klopp had made having rested the key players in a derby match. Maybe he's looking for the FA cup or he's thinking about January fixtures, who knows. Anyway, he deprived me from a good prediction again.
I've signed up at Fantasy Football and joined the Premier Skills league by managing a team named "Genuine United FC" although I have to say it's my first time to play an online game. It looks like we — Genuine United — have to play a one-legged play-off in order to be promoted to the PS league this weekend!!! We have already missed almost this season's half, hope not to be involved in a relegation battle!

I agree with you without the prayer of the week.
Otamendi’s performance and goal were so good, but I think the only goal of Man U was due to his mistake.
I think the player of the week is Ederson rather than Otamendi. He made amazing saves like last week De Gea.
My prediction is City 2 Tottenham 1.
