Arsenal v Manchester Utd

Arsenal v Manchester Utd

Welcome to this week's Premier League Prediction! Every Monday we have a new prediction for you to make. This week Rich and Jack talk about the match between Arsenal and Manchester Utd. Both teams are fighting for a top four finish which will mean Champions League qualification. Matches between Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger are often interesting to watch. Who will come out on top this time? Will United be distracted by their semi-final matches in the Europa League? We also take a look at the first conditional e.g. 'If Utd win the Europa League, the Premier League will have five teams in next season's Champions League.' This is also a page for you to discuss all the upcoming Premier League matches. This weekend sees some big matches in the Premier League and we want you to discuss all the matches in the comments section below.

Transcript

If the listening was a bit difficult, you can listen again and read the transcript at the same time.
Read and listen.

Jack: Hi everybody. I’m Jack and we’re here with a little bit of extra football English for you to think about.

Rich: That’s right, Jack. Just a little bit. Hi, everybody. I’m Rich and we’re here with this week’s Premier League Prediction and some football English for you to practise.

Jack: This week there is another big match between the teams fighting for a place in the top four of the Premier League.

Rich: The top four guarantees Champions League football next season and there are six teams battling for four places.

Jack: And the big match this weekend is Arsenal in sixth against Manchester Utd in fifth.

Rich: These two teams are just outside the top four so need to win to keep their chances of a top four finish alive.

Jack: I’m a bit worried about Arsenal. It could be the first time in 20 years that the Gunners don’t qualify for the Champions League.

RIch: It will also be a big deal if Manchester Utd miss out but at least they have two chances to qualify for the Champions League.

Jack: What do you mean?

Rich: The winners of the Europa League, Europe’s junior competition, also go into the Champions League.

Jack: Of course, and United are in the semi-finals this week against Celta Vigo from Spain.

Rich:  ‘If United win the Europa League, the Premier League will have five teams in the Champions League next season.’

Jack: So what about this weekend’s match. I think Arsenal will win. They need to bounce back after losing the North London Derby to Spurs! I think they will win 1-0.

Rich: I actually agree with you, Jack. I think Man Utd will have their eye on the Europa League semi-finals. This match comes in the middle of the two legs of those matches against the Spanish team. United have also suffered lots of injuries lately, especially in defence. Arsenal only have the Premier League now and I think they will get the three points. Final score: Arsenal 2-1 Manchester Utd

Jack: I’m not sure it will be enough to get Arsenal into the top four but you never know…

Rich: Before we go, let’s take a look at one of the sentences we used earlier. It is ‘If United win the Europa League, the Premier League will have five teams in the Champions League next season.’

Jack: This is an example of a conditional sentence. It is often called the first conditional which is used to describe real and possible situations. It is possible that Utd will win the Europa League and the result of this happening would be five Premier League teams in the Champions League next season.

Rich: We create the first conditional by using if plus the present simple and then will in the second part of the sentence.

Jack: Some examples might be: If Swansea finish in 18th place they will be relegated or if Arsenal beat Manchester United at the weekend I’ll be very happy.

Rich: Can you think of some first conditional sentences? Try writing them in the comments section below.

Jack: Right, that’s all from us for now. We’ll be back later in the week with a new podcast. Let us know who you think will win the big match in the vote and in the comments section.

Rich: And remember to discuss the rest of this week’s football fixtures in the comments section. There are some other big matches this weekend, too.

Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

Correct me.
Utd has lost lots of players due to the injuries and has had difficult fixtures both in April and in May, so the draw against Arsenal can be considered as a success. I'm sure it's more important for the club and Mourinho himself to win the Europa League. That's why he won't jeopardise the core players who will stand for Utd in their home match against Celta Vigo.
It's a chance for Arsenal to take 3 points but I'm not sure that they'll be able to do it.
I'm going to watch only the mentioned match because I'm busy on Saturday. However, if I have to miss any interesting the match on TV, I'll watch "Match of the day" which also helps me to increase the level of listening skills.

There is the UEFA ratings which defines the number of teams each country have in the UCL every year. Russia has 2 teams now, but after the international club matches this year we have more points than Portugal. This means that we'll have 3 teams in the UCL in the 2018/2019 season.

Hi Shobonenok

I've re-written your comment below. Take a look at the differences between your comment and mine and have a think why I might have written things differently.

A draw between Arsenal and Man U would satisfying for both teams. I am going to watch Leicester against Watford if I can during my travel to Algiers. The terrible run of Algerian team has bad effect on popularity of both Mahrez and Slimani and this crisis is still occuring although there is a new manager. Algiers people prefer Real and Barca to low profil teams.

The number of teams depends also on who will win this year European Trophy. Spain will have the greatest number in theory but the prequalifying of 2017 will decide on end.

If I were Englishman I shall prefer to see Man U winning the European Cup.

Correct me: I would like to find out what happens to Arsenal if they win the FA cup? Could they be palying in the champions league? If yes, then we are likely to have 6 teams in the champions league. Great season it will be next year if all the above are right i must say.

Hi Kwesimanifest

Your writing is very accurate so these are not big problems, nevertheless, here are a couple of corrections:

I would like to find out what happens to Arsenal if they win the FA cup? Could they be playing in the champions league? If yes, then we are likely to have 6 teams in the champions league. Great season it will be next year if all the above are right i must say.

1. What you have written is not completely wrong. Because you are talking about a rule, the zero conditional (if + present simple + then + present simple) is OK. However, I would have used a first conditional because it feels more like a speculation. What will happen to Arsenal if they win the FA Cup?

2. I'm not sure about this. It really is fine. I think that it could be better if the form matched the previous sentence and so I would have used will rather than could, but it's fine.

3. This final sentence sounds a lot like Yoda from Star Wars.  It will be a great season next year if that's right.

Unfortunately, the winner of the FA Cup qualifies for the Europa League not the Champions League.

Thanks

Jack - The Premier Skills English Team
