Jack: Hi everybody. I’m Jack and we’re here with a little bit of extra football English for you to think about.
Rich: That’s right, Jack. Just a little bit. Hi, everybody. I’m Rich and we’re here with this week’s Premier League Prediction and some football English for you to practise.
Jack: This week’s bit of football English is the word ‘derby’. Later, Rich, you’re going to predict the result of the Merseyside Derby between Liverpool and Everton, but first, we’re going to look at the word derby in a bit more detail.
Rich: First, the meaning of derby is a match between two teams from the same city or region. Liverpool v Everton is the Merseyside Derby because Merseyside is the region where Liverpool is located.
Jack: In the Premier League, there are lots of derby matches. The Manchester Derby, the North London Derby between Arsenal and Spurs. There’s a North East Derby or the Tees- Wear Derby between Sunderland and Middlesbrough and lots of other London Derbies.
Rich: A derby is always a match between two teams from the same region. A derby is never just a match between two important teams. A match between Chelsea and Manchester Utd can never be called a derby.
Jack: But why do we say ‘derby’?
Rich: Well, nobody is 100% sure but it probably came from a horse race called The Derby. The Derby was the UK’s most famous horse race in the 19th century and the word ‘derby’ started to be used for a contest in any type of sport.
Jack: So, the word derby but more specifically the term ‘local derby’ started to be used in football in the early 20th century.
Rich: But, over time, the word ‘local’ was often dropped and the word ‘derby’ came to mean a match between two local teams.
Jack: So, in Liverpool, when they talk about the derby they mean the match between Liverpool and Everton.
Rich: That’s right and that is the match I’m going to speak about now. The Merseyside Derby. This Saturday, Liverpool play Everton at Anfield in the 228th Merseyside Derby. Both teams are in good form and have won three of their last five matches. Everton have Romelu Lukaku, who is the Premier League’s top scorer with 21 goals, so will always be dangerous. But Liverpool need the three points in their fight to finish in the Champions League places With Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane playing well I think Liverpool will have too much quality for their local rivals. I also have a feeling that Philippe Coutinho will have a good game. Final score: Liverpool 2-1 Everton
Jack: You know there is a cliche in football which says ‘form goes out of the window in derby matches’ it means that because of the passionate atmosphere and desire of the players to win the quality of the players is less important.
Rich: Does that mean you think Everton are going to win?
Jack: Yes, Everton will win 3-2!
Rich: Thanks, Jack!
Jack: You can discuss this match and the rest of this week’s football fixtures in the comments section. There are some other big matches this weekend, too. Arsenal v City on Sunday!
Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

This will be a good derby and I think that Liverpool will win. Today there will be a derby in Brazil (Cruzeiro against Atlético Mineiro), this kind of match is always different than a normal match. The city stop for watch, it's a exciting game and there are players that can decide a match how Coutinho at Liverpool and Arrascaeta for Cruzeiro.

In my point of view, Liverpool will win the mentioned Debry if something contingent, for example, injuries or sending off will happen. However, Everton will be able to score twice.
Unfortunately, I won't have an opportunity to watch either the Merseyside Derby or Arsenal against City. The university schedule on Saturday and the football cup match in my university on Sunday are the reasons which I can't overcome.
Chelsea - Crystal Palace is the remained derby. Palace is situated in the south of London if I'm not mistaken.
I have never been at the stadium during any of derby matches in England but there are lots of differences between them and normal games in Russia.
Derby means a stadium full of supporters (it's an achievement for the Russian Premier League, because our citizens don't love football as much as in Engand or Spain and Germany, for instance), a special media attention, atmosphere at the stadium, a strong desire to win for each of playing clubs.
These matches are often memorized by the supporters of both teams. For example, Spartak Moscow, the team which I support lost its first home derby at the new stadium against CSKA. Spartak was took apart, it was a huge gap between the qualities of CSKA and Spartak performances. It was absolutely bad day at the office and lots of supporters were totally aggrieved and livid, threw their scarves on the pitch. Someone let their hearts rule their heads and sweared on the team, the owner and the whole world.
Fortunately, there were no attempts to break the criminal law.

Hi Shobonenok
You're right, Crystal Palace are based in south London. And what a shock result, too. This is what derby matches are about. The form book often goes out the window!

Merseyside Derby this year will go for Everton win. Liverpool coach Mr KLOPP don't seem to me well in his shoes from what I saw in the TV.
Again I will try to see Leicester waiting for them a good tie in Champion's League.
Watford match against Sunderland is another derby for the North East region, doesn't it? And for the South we can watch Bornemouth playing not far away Southampton.

Hi Elghoul
You're right about the South Coast Derby between Southampton and Bournemouth but Watford is just north of London so the match against Sunderland is not a derby.

Just recently there was a derby match in Ghana between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko which ended by Hearts winning by a lone goal from the spot in about the 72nd minute. The jubilant fans of Hearts of Oak was enough to tell how important the derby match was even though the refree gave a questionable penalty.

Derby matches are different feom normal matches because of the euphoria and the enthusiasm that comes with such derby matches. Fans, players and teams need a win in such matches to earn bragging rights if for nothing at all.

Correct me
I think Liverpool will win this derby, they show a really good football in big matches. Klopp knows how to inspire his players and, in my opinion, they will fight every moment of match.
Also I want to see Arsenal against MC. It is the key match for Arsene. They really need points! But I think they will lose.
