Swansea City

Swansea City

Swansea badge

Swansea City was founded in 1912 and play their home games at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea, Wales. The capacity of the Liberty Stadium is 20532 which makes it one of the smallest stadiums in the Premier League, where they have been playing since 2005. Before then, Swansea or 'The Swans' had been playing at Vetch Field Stadium, which had been their home from 1912. The current manager is Paul Clement, who has been assistant manager at Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Only just over 10 years ago, Swansea were in the fourth division of English football. Swansea play in white shirts, shorts and socks with a gold trim.

At the end of 2001, Swansea City football club was bought for just £1.

Swansea have won one major English trophy, which was the League Cup in 2013, under then manager, Michael Laudrup. However, Swansea have won the Welsh Cup 10 times, but as a Welsh club playing in England are no longer able to play in this competition. Swansea finished in their highest-ever Premier League position in 2014/15 (8th), but their highest ever finish in the top division was in 1981-82, when they finished 6th. By winning the League Cup, Swansea qualified for the UEFA Europa League for the first time through the English system, Swansea had played in the UEFA Cup 7 times previously, after winning the Welsh Cup.

Fernando Llorente plays for Swansea.

Swansea City, along with other Welsh clubs such as Cardiff City, have played in England since the clubs were formed. This was because, at that time, there was no specific Welsh League and both English and Welsh clubs played together in regional leagues because there were much better transport links between South Wales and England than between North Wales and South Wales. When the Welsh Premier League was created in 1992, Swansea and Cardiff decided to continue playing in the English Leagues.

Swansea’s strongest rivalry is with Cardiff, which is another city in South Wales. The 'South Wales Derby' between Swansea and Cardiff was first played in 1912. It has been played 107 times, with Cardiff winning 44 times and Swansea 35. In November 2013, the first ever 'South Wales Derby' was played in the Premier League, with Cardiff City winning 1-0.

Leroy Fer in the rain for Swansea City.

In 2016/17, Swansea City finished 15th and narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship. After a poor start to the season, Swansea changed managers and Paul Clement arrived at the club. He turned around the team's fortunes on the pitch and Swansea will hope to have a more comfortable season this time around. Swansea’s top scorer was Spanish international Fernando Llorente, with 15 goals, and Swansea will again look to the Spaniard to provide the goals for the team. Do Swansea City have enough quality to avoid a battle against relegation this season?

Prediction 2017/18: 17th

Key player: Fernando Llorente

Did you know......?

Swansea City are not the only team that play at the Liberty Stadium, it is also home to rugby team, Ospreys.

Swansea City is a nice team which play defensive football but they need improvements in some positions. My favourite player for me in Swansea City was the Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski but he left for West Ham United.
Hope to see them in the Premier League soon.

I think Laudrupp should have stayed in Swansea. He had still so many new things to teach them. The problem is that in one moment they showed bad performances. Still, it was just a permanent form, not a reason for leaving the team. This year they will have to strive to win a good position.

I think Gomis is an excellent player. Players often have dips in form and when it happens to a few players at the same time this has an effect on the entire team. It reminds me of a common football expression - 'Form is temporary, class is permanent.'

Nice expression, I've got it written down. I've also heard the recent news that Garry Monk had been reluctantly dismissed, although, IMHO, the blame for Swans' poor performance should not be fully put on him. Let's see how they perform in post-Monk era.

Real refreshment for the Premier league. The swans are making unique atmosphere and coreography. I always thought that Cardif was only true representative of welsh football. How wrong.. There's Swansea FC and they are playing really really well..
