Hi Straikflaer
A cup tie is a match that is played in a cup competition. Tie is a synonym of match but it is more commonly used to talk about cup matches.
The word tie is also a synonym of draw. This can be confusing sometimes. It's possible to have a tie in a cup tie. If this happens you need a replay or a penalty shoot-out to separate the teams.
Best wishes

Hi winthuya and welcome to Premier Skills English!
Question 3 Before the competition, the two teams played against each other in a very exciting _____ .
The correct answer is friendly because teams play friendly matches before the season starts. For example Arsenal and other Premier League teams might play in different countries against clubs from other countries in June and July.

No new words, but for a 'cup tie'. Once I have heard the sentence 'their football club was cup tied' Based on the context I figured it out that the team was disallowed to participate in the cup tournament. Am I right to understand it that way?

Hi Nikosonris - I'm not sure about that use of the expression. Players can be cup-tied, but I don't think clubs can be. I don't know if this happens in other countries, but in the UK, a player can only play for one club in a club competition. So if a player plays in the opening round of a competition, like the FA Cup, and then moves clubs, he can't play for his new team in matches in the same club competition. Thanks, Jack.
