Hi Tonucatien

I think that in most cases, they are the same. The only difference I can think of is that if a reserve is asked to play, then they would be a substitute. When they are on the bench, they are reserves or substitutes.

I hope that helps.

Jack

I think they are the same, too. You're right about the only difference. Both two words are about the players who are in registered player list but not in first team. I just wonder why there are two words about the same, there must be a difference, a little at least.
In many times, I can't explain all my thoughts. So my sentences are unintelligible, or stupid :)
Sorry about my limitation. If you find any error in my comments, please show me!
Anyway, thank you for you answers.

Hi Tonucatien

Your English is remarkable - I can't believe you have many problems expalining yourself. I think you're right - in the Premier League, clubs have to name squads of twenty five players from which they can play a starting eleven and have between three and twelve on the bench. I think that in some cases, players who don't regularly play, but are fit and in the squad are know as reserve players, but it's hard to find clear definitions to show the difference.

English is a dynamic language - there are official and unofficial words being added all the time and this is why there are so many words that are so similar. It's true that they are added because they help describe something differently, but they often get used interchangeably and it's hard to pin down what the differences are. I think that advanced speakers of any language get a feel for vocabulary and don't need to be aware of the exact meaning of words.

Thanks

Yes Jack. You're completely right about new words being added in people language.
I usually use dictionary and search on Internet when reading or writing English.
