Pronunciation

Pronunciation

In all my years in the classroom and working as a trainer, pronunciation has been one of the most difficult areas related to learning English, for learners and teachers alike. Speaking to other teachers or watching them teach, I realise that they're often in the same situation I used to be: trying to teach something related to spoken English which they're not 100% sure about, and which the learners often don't really hear - meaning of course that they have a limited chance to actually speak like that!

In this workshop, we will consider a few alternative approaches when focussing on pronunciation, and I hope it will help you, when thinking about what pronunciation should mean in your classes, and exactly what you want your learners to achieve when you work on pronunciation.

You can download all the materials from the workshop in the downloads section on the right. You can complete some of the materials online by taking a look at the activities in the activities section, and if you have any questions or comments about the workshop we would be happy to hear from you. You can add your comments in the discuss section. We hope you enjoy the workshop.

Pronunciation Workshop

The following activities on the topic of pronunciation are intended to help you think about what you learnt from the video.

Activity 1: In this activity, you have to match the activities to whether they help raise awareness about features of pronunciation, help learners understand how the features work or help learners speak better.
Match the activities to their objectives.

Activity 2: In this next activity, look at the different opinions about teaching pronunciation . There are no right or wrong answers, the opinions are intended to get you thinking about how you tackle pronunciation with your learners.
How do you focus on pronunciation in the classroom?

I find teaching intonation and sentence stress a tricky area of teaching because it can have different meanings and some of them might sounds a bit rude.

Pronunciation should be made by breaking words into syllabus

I'm not a teacher, but this is a very interesting tip to be used. Btw, I'm getting used to your accent.., I've been listening to you on futurelearn(dot)com also.
