Choosing a coach

Choosing a coach

In this week's Premier Skills English Podcast, Jack and Rich interview two very different candidates for a job. Listen to both phone interviews and decide who you would give the job to? The language focus is on the words enough and too and your task is to write about a player who you think would be right for your club. As always, we also have a new football phrase for you to guess. Enjoy!

Jack: Hi Rich, how’s the football coaching going?

Rich: Oh, hello Jack. Really well, thanks. The kids are off school for the summer holidays so we’re doing some extra training sessions.

Jack: Getting ready for the new season?

Rich: Exactly. Actually, we’ve got loads more kids than we expected. Parents are sending their kids to us so they can practise their English and do some football training at the same time.

Jack: So, you need more coaches?

Rich: Yes, we need more coaches. What about you Jack?

Jack: I live a bit too far away but I could help you find a coach?

Rich: Sounds good to me!

Welcome - Talking on the phone

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich

Jack: and I’m Jack

Rich: and welcome to this week’s Premier Skills English podcast

Jack: Where we talk about football and help you with your English.

Jack: What’s happening this week, Rich?

Rich: In this week’s podcast, we’re going to talk about choosing the right person for a job and some phrases and language connected to this.

Jack: That’s right. We’re going to do a couple of practise conversations and there’s going to be lots of vocabulary for you to learn and the language focus is on the words too and enough.

Rich: And we’ve got a task for you out there listening to this podcast. We’re going to ask you to think of a footballer that you would like your football team to buy and tell us why he would be the right player for your club.

Jack: And when you tell us, we want you to use lots of words and phrases that we used in our practice conversations.

Topic Focus

Jack: So, Rich. You need some help finding a new football coach. What kind of person are you looking for?

Rich: Well. I’m basically looking for someone with some experience of football coaching who is available to help two or three afternoons a week.

Jack: That’s a good start, but you need to think a bit more about the kind of person you want. Who would you want to work with? What would make this person a good candidate to help out with coaching?

Rich: That’s a good point. I’d like someone who likes working with children. Someone who is fun and isn’t too strict. We want them to learn, but the kids come to training because they love football and they want to have fun.

Jack: So, they need to be fun, not too strict, enjoy working with kids and probably patient too. But they need to have enough experience, too.

Rich: Actually, I’ve got the numbers of a couple of potential coaches who have said they are interested. Maybe we could give them a ring?

Jack: Good idea. Sure. I tell you what, I’ll call the first one and you can call the second and then we can ask our listeners to decide who would be the best coach.

Rich: Nice. I like that idea. It takes away the responsibility from me!!

Jack: So, who’s first?

Rich: Albert.

Jack: Have you got his number?

Rich: Hold on. It’s in my phone. OK, here it is 692343232.

Jack: Right, OK. I’m going to give him a ring. I’ll ask him a few questions to see what’s he’s like. So, we’re looking for some who has a bit of experience at football coaching and will be fun and good with children.

Rich: That’s right.

Ring ring

Albert: Hello. Who’s that? Hold on. Pass it. Pass it. Oh, come on! You’ve got to do better than that! That’s not good enough!

Jack: Hello. Is that Albert?

Albert: Yeah, it is sorry. Who’s that?

Jack: Yes, it’s Jack here. I’m calling regarding the football coaching that you said you might be interested in.

Albert: Hold on a sec. Tom, Tom you’ve got to hit the target there. You missed again. Right, 20 press ups! Go! I’ll be back in a minute.

Albert: Jack you said?

Jack: Yes, that’s right. I was just phoning to see if I could ask you a few questions about the football coaching we’re offering to see if you might be interested in helping out.

Albert: Yes, great.

Jack: Is it a good time to talk?

Albert: Brilliant. Yes, hold on. Tom - three times round the pitch. Go! Now is good, I’m on the training pitch now - giving my son Tom a few tips you know!

Jack: Ahh, I see. Have you got a lot of experience coaching kids?

Albert: Yeah, yeah I train my eight-year-old Tom every day. Push him and push him. He’s going to be a brilliant player. He thinks he trains too much but he needs it you know!

Jack: Anybody else?

Albert: I was in the army for 20 years. We had an army team and I helped out with the coaching. Lots of running. Running every day. That’s what you need to play. You need to be fit. You can never run enough, you know!

Jack: OK, and do you think fun is something that is important when coaching kids.

Albert: Fun? No, not really. Kids today have too much fun! Discipline! That’s what you need. You need to take things seriously if you want to be the best. Right, I need to get back to Tom. Call me when you need a coach. I’m available every day. Tom! Tom! Faster!

Jack: OK, bye...

Rich: How did it go?

Jack: He’s free every day. That’s a good point! But, I’m not sure he’s patient enough to work with children. Anyway, we’ll let our listeners make the decision.

Rich: OK, Rob is the other coach. I’ll give a ring and see if he’s free to talk. I’ve got his number here.

Ring, ring

Rob: Hello?

Rich: Hello. Is that Rob?

Rob: Yes, yes it is.

Rich: Hi. My name’s Rich. I’m giving you a call about the football coaching that you said you were interested in. Are you free to talk?

Rob: Yes, of course.

Rich: OK, I’d just like to ask you a few questions. Can I start by asking you what experience you have of football coaching?

Rob: Well’ first of all, I’d just like to say that I don’t have too much football coaching experience but I have done some general sports coaching and I really really enjoyed it. And, I love football and am looking to be involved in my local community, you know…

Rich: Great… Have you got any experience teaching children?

Rob: Not a lot, but like I said before I’ve done a bit of coaching before. It was with children on a summer camp and they and I really enjoyed it. We had lots of fun.

Rich: OK and what do you think is the most important thing when coaching children?

Rob: I think the most important thing is they have fun. Have fun in a safe environment. They already love football and if one of them turns into the next Harry Kane that’s a bonus!

Rich: OK, one final thing. Are you available in the afternoons?

Rob: Yes, well every day apart from Wednesdays and Fridays. Wednesdays I’m doing a first aid training course and Fridays I have language classes.

Rich: Well, nice speaking to you and we’ll be in touch soon.

Rob: Good speaking to you, too. Bye.

Jack: How did it go?

Rich: Good, I think.

Jack: Right so, we want our listeners to decide which candidate to choose to help out with the football coaching. Is it going to be Albert or will it be Rob? Let us know in the comments section and tell us why we should choose that person!

Language Focus

Jack: In the conversations above we used the words too and enough quite a lot.

Rich: Both of these words are used to talk about the amount or degree of something. Too is used when we’re talking about more than what is necessary or needed and enough is used when we’re saying that something is sufficient.

Jack: Earlier, Albert said kids today have too much fun this means that kids have more fun than what is necessary. He thinks kids should have less fun and take things more seriously.

Rich: Earlier, when Albert was shouting at his son he said that’s not good enough. This means that he needs to do more because it isn’t sufficient.

Jack: Enough can be used after adjectives like in the example above - it’s often used in negative sentences like he’s not fast enough or he’s not old enough.

Rich: Enough is often also used before nouns. For example, I don’t have enough money or earlier Jack said I’m not sure he enough patience.

Jack: Too is often used with adjectives. For example, that player is too old or he’s too slow.

Rich: When we use too with nouns we use much or many like in the conversation earlier Laura said she doesn’t have too much coaching experience.

Jack: We’ve got a couple of activities about this language on the page below if you want to practise.

Task

Rich: We’ve got a task for you to do. We’d like you to think of a football player that you think your club should sign.

Jack: When you have thought of this player you should think why he would be a good player to sign for your team.

Rich: Use phrases like What I like about … is and one of the best things about... is and has got plenty of ---------

Jack: You can also try to use lots of examples of too and enough in your comments.

Rich: Write your opinions in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

Can you work out this week’s football phrase?

Rich: Have you got a football phrase for us this week?

Jack: Yes, I have, but first, last week’s football phrase. The phrase was pre-season friendly. The phrase is used to describe matches that happen in July and early August before the Premier League kicks off.

Rich: Well done to Liubomyr from Ukraine, AssemJuve from Palestine, Ahmed Adam from Sudan, and Kwesimanifest from Ghana. You all got the right answer!

Rich: So, what’s this week’s football phrase, Jack?

Jack: This week’s football phrase is ******** ******. There are no football matches at the moment so football news is full of ******** *******. Which player is moving where and so on. I’ve heard that Alexis Sanchez is moving to Manchester City and Alvaro Morata is going to Chelsea. But, who knows? A ******** ****** is a story or some information that might be true or more often something that is not true!

Rich: I try not to read them but I can’t help it sometimes!

Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for this week! Don’t forget to write your answers to our questions and make a guess at our football phrase in the comments below.

Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football!

Vocabulary

How much did you understand?

In the podcast, Rich and Jack used some words and phrases that might be new for you. Do you know the words in bold?

The kids are off school for the summer holidays so we're doing some extra training sessions.

I've got the numbers of a couple of potential coaches.

There were a few more tricky words and phrases in the podcast. Do you know what they all mean? Try the activity below, then, listen to the podcast again to hear how we used the words. This can really help your understanding.

Activity 1

In this activity, have a look at some words and phrases from the podcast and try to match them to the correct definition.
Can you match the words to their definitions?

Can you spot the famous face at this Premier Skills coaching session?

Language

Enough

In this podcast, Rich and Jack used the words too and enough quite a lot. Both of these words are used to talk about the degree of something. Let's take a look at enough first. Enough is usually used to say that the amount, number or degree of something is sufficient; more of something isn't necessary. It's often used in negative sentences. Take a look at this example from the podcast:

I'm not sure he's patient enough to work with children.

Here enough is being used after an adjective and it's being used in a negative sentence so it's saying that this person is not patient - he needs to be more patient. These are some other common examples. Can you think of a situation when you might hear this phrase?

That's not good enough! Can you do it again, please.

You're not coming in, you're not old enough. Next!

You can't go on this ride I'm afraid. You're not tall enough.

Enough is also often used with nouns but when it is used with nouns you can see that enough comes before the noun rather than after it. Take a look at these examples:

The coaches need to have enough experience.

I don't have enough money to buy that car.

I never have enough time to finish my homework.

Too

Too is used to say that there is more than what is needed or necessary. It's more common to see too in positive sentences but the situation is usually negative. Too is used before adjectives and, like in the example below, can also be used with nouns and verbs but we need to add much (uncountable nouns) or many (countable nouns) after too. Take a look at this example from the podcast.

Kids today have too much fun.

These are some more common examples. Can you think of a situation when you might hear this phrase?

I can't do that. It's too difficult.

I can't talk now I have too much to do.

Celebrities are paid too much money if you ask me.

In this activity, take a look at the sentences and decide if you should use too or enough.

Activity 2

In this activity, take a look at each sentence and decide if you should be using 'too' or 'enough'.
Complete the gaps with the right word!

What skills do you think you need to be a good football coach for children?

Learning

Finding the right person

Jack and Rich used a few phrases and expressions to talk about the two candidates for the job. These expressions are useful when speaking about other people's characteristics and personalities. They can be used in lots of situations and you may want to use them when talking about a football player you want your club to buy, which is the task we ask you to write about in the task section.

  1. The good thing about .......... is .................
  2. What I like about ............... is .................
  3. She's got lots of experience with ................
  4. He definitely knows how to..................
  5. She's got enough ................. but she might not have enough ...................
  6. He's too .................. I don't think he's ...........................

There are lots of ******** ******* in the newspapers at this time of year. Do you know this week's football phrase?

Task

The right player for your club

In the podcast, Rich and Jack interviewed two very different people who wanted to be a football coach. They will have to decide who is the right person for the job. When a manager or a club decide to buy a new player they don't only think about the player's ability on the pitch. The manager has to think about things such as: is the player will be right for the team, do they need someone in that player's position, what is the player's injury record, does he have disciplinary problems, and does he work hard. The club also has to think about things such as: the size of the transfer fee, the player's wages and the length of the contract. We want you to tell us about a player you think should sign for your club.  Why would this player make your team and your club better?

  1. Think about some of the things the manager has to think about before buying a player.
  2. Think about some of the things the club has to think about before buying a player.
  3. Use some of the language (too and enough) we used in the podcast in your answer.

Write your answer in the comments section below and don't forget to reply to other people's messages, too!

TASK

• To be a good football coach for children needed pedagogical proficiency and to like training kids as well. The best method teaching children is to make it like playing a game.

• The players who have disciplinary problems never should be transferred even the best in her/his position. The priority of manager must be team work and efficiency.

LEARNING

• In my opinion Chelsea- N'Golo Kanté is one of the perfect midfielder. He attends team counter-attacks,assists forwards and helps defend line as well. He definitely knows how to tackle and generally achieves to grab the ball while tackling. He's got lots of experience with football and What I like about him is being two-sided midfielder. He's got enough experience but he might not have enough tall.

COMMENT

• Both of them seems not to be experienced enough.I would look for more options. If I'd have no more candidates to recruit I'd choose Rob.

PHRASES

• The athletes who are student have to study rest of the time after training to get ready for school everyday.

Hi Mo'men Mohammed,

Hakim Ziyech is a very good choice. He is having an excellent season for Chelsea.

- I would sing with sign 'Rob' as coach for my Team. I think the verb you are looking for here is sign.
- I think it will  would be 'Hakim Ziyech'. You should use would as this is an unreal/hypothetical situation.

The player that I think he would be right for my club is N'Golo Kante

The good thing about him is that he is fit enough for the tell
What I like about him is that he is self-disciplined
He's got lots of experience with the way he intercepts the ball and give it to a more creative player to build an attack
He definitely knows how to tackle without making a foul or getting cards
He's got enough strength but he might not have enough skills
He's too fast I don't think he's talented with dribbling

Hi Chamara - welcome to Premier Skills English. We don't get that many Sri Lankans on here so it's good to see you.

Here are some corrections:

i think rob her a good coach because rob good understand the kids and to mush fan kids always like a fun that way they can learn very first .

1. This is not easy to understand. If you used capital letters to start your sentences and full stops to end them, it makes them easier to understand.

2. Rob is a man so you should write: He is a good coach because ...

3. This is quite a common error. Understand is a verb so you should use an adverb. The adverb form of good is well. So you could say: He understands well. However, in this sentence, it would be better to use really. He really understands the kids.

4. Here, I think you mean too much. However, kids are countable so you should say too many. One more point, I think that in this sentence you don't mean too many (this means that there are so many that there is a problem) rather you mean a large number so you should have said: Lots of kids ...

5. Instead of saying like a fun, you could say: like to have fun.

Thanks again for commenting and I hope you enjoy the podcasts.

Correct me

Since luiz suarez had left, there hasn't been a prolific goalscorer at Anfield. And this is why we've seen the Reds struggling against mid-table teams dropping easy points.
It's very important to have a player who fights for the golden boot award, by this way goals will be regulary scored.
The prospects of playing against the big teams are enough to extra motivate the players, while the topscorer is always extremely motivated to score at least a brace in each game to catch up with the goal-scoring table, and this will help out with our probs against mid-table teams.

My choice for this role-playing is the Gabunian striker Aubumeyang. No one doubts the quality of the player as he is very skillful, but what I like about him is, he's very calm and quick-thinking when sent one-on-one with the keeper, he scores from half chances and making assists for teammates as well.
One of the best things a bout him is his pace; he's one of the fastest footballers on the planet! He will perfectly fit liverpool's style of play.

The rhythm of the EPL is already fast, so, he will settle in straight away in things like:
direct play, vertical passing and pressing high up the pitch to win the ball back to start making counter attacks.
This player if signed to be alongside Sadio Mane up front with Coutinho just behind, there would be no chance for any team to escape from being beaten!

Albert seems to be very strict, limited and aggressive. By appointing this guy, kids are going to hate football. Hence, he won't be a rational choice. Rob, on the other hand, dispite having no enough experiences, he seems to be accetable. Kids love the person who got a good sense of humor. Besides, Rob is keen on working in his comunity, he's also enthusiastic about giving us world-class footballers in the future. And for all those reasons, I'll go for Rob.

Rob is better for children than Albert who is too strict.

Mahrez would be right for Arsenal if they can afford enough money for the fees. What I like about this creative mieldfielder  whom other persons qualify improperly as winger is its dribble and his straitforwards balls on the empty spaces. He is talented enough to fit Gunners with his assists and goals and someone would praise his balls towards fast runners like Bellerin or Lacasette and how he can do with Sanchis or Ozul.

Hello everyone, it's time to come back to the Premier Skills English!
Let's start with hiring a right person for the football coach job. If we don't want to harm children's mind we shouldn't hire Albert. There are lots of disadvantages of giving him a job. He has no expererience of teaching any groups of children, he is too rude and strict with everyone he manages, he has a lot of free time and, i'm afraid, he is far from being a teetotaler.
On the other hand, Rob (Stark, haha) considers fan as an important part of relations with children. He has no experience of football coaching but it's easier to teach how to coach in football than to change a person’s temper.

Let me turn now to my choice of player who is necessary to be bought to Man City. Notwithstanding Ederson was signed from Benfica I want Joe Hart to be returned to the squad. First of all, he is a top notch goalkeeper. He has wonderful reaction, often makes unbelievable saves, is loved by City fans, has a huge international experience. Defenders can hang on for him and he is good in the box. However, I don't have on hand his stats and don't know why he fell out with Pep.
Hope, he will have a chance to compete with Bravo and Ederson.

The phrase is "******* *******", I suppose.

Are you going to watch the UEFA Women's Euro? I was watching Russia vs Italy yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by the level of women's football and high skills of the participants. By the way, Three Lions and the Spanish team play tomorrow against Scotland and Portugal. Two national derbies are expected to be cracking!

Hi Shobonenok

It's a pity Hull got relegated last season. How do you think Leonid Slutsky will do? The Championship is a very tough league and Hull have sold a few of their best players - it might not be the best place to go and manage at the moment! I've heard a ****** that some Russian players might be encouraged to move to England this summer as preparation for the World Cup next year. Do you think it will happen?

Hi Rich
I'm not sure about that. Russian players can earn more playing in the Russian PL and English clubs won't probably pay even a half of the current salaries to the Russian footballers. Moreover, most of them underestimate the level and reputation of Championship and its clubs. As for the top PL clubs, they may be wonder only about Golovin but, once again, it's only a rumour at the moment.

The rumours about Smolov's transfer are spread in the Russian media for more than a year and everyone is tired about them. Russians were figured as suitable players for English clubs only after Euro-2008 which was successful for us. Most of players, supporters and media in Russia felt irritated when national team failed to qualify from the Confederations Cup group. I have a feeling that foreign scouts were not admired by the Russian footballers' performances.

Hi Phhchuong123

This phrase is a synonym of the phrase that you are looking for so it is a really good guess! The main difference is that football gossip is used as an uncountable noun and is more general whereas the phrase we want is used as a countable noun and can be about one specific thing.
