The word 'handball' seems too easy and I confuse it with 'foul'.

The phrasebook defines a fourth official as ' He decides how much injury time to add on'. However, the wiki said that a fourth official ' Notifying the teams and spectators, by means of numbered boards or electronic displays where supplied, of the amount of time added on at the end of each half, after having been advised of this by the referee'. So is the referee in effect deciding the amount of time added on?

Hi Asurada

You have made a very good point and you are right, it is the referee who decides the amount of injury time although the fourth official and an assistant keep a record of stoppages. Here is a link to an article on the BBC that has much more detail than this vocabulary article ever could.

- What does "second-last opponent" mean? (in sentence "A player is in an offside position if he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent." - Phrase book)
- I think the sentence about offside in the quiz is correct, in phrase book is not.
- I think handball is when a player touches the ball, not matter how deliberately or incidentally.
- The fourth official doesn't decides how much extra time, he decides injury time (I learned it in earlier lesson).

Hi Tonucatien,

  1. Second-last means the one before the last one. For example, if the ball is played forward and an attacking player is further forward than all the defenders but not the goalkeeper (the last defender) he is offside.
  2. Both the quiz and the phrasebook questions are correct. The phrasebook explanation is more specific than the quiz question.
  3. Handball is only seen as a foul when it is deliberate. You can see more here http://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/laws/football-11-11/law-1...
  4. Officially, extra-time is in cup games when there are 30 extra minutes and like you say injury time is usually 2 or 3 minutes that is decided by the referee att he end of each half. Informally, we sometimes call injury time extra time which can be a bit confusing smiley

Thanks for your comments and I hope you are enjoying the website.
