Football English Blog: Injuries

Football English Blog: Injuries

Welcome to Lesson 2 in Activity Week - Health & Fitness.

In all of our Football English blogs, we look at a topical item of football news and ask you to do three things:

  1. Read the article and look at the words in red. Think about what these words mean.
  2. Do the quiz at the end of the article. This quiz checks your understanding of the football English in the article.
  3. Answer the questions and give your opinion in the comments section.

This is our latest Football English Blog and this week we're talking about injuries and if tackling should be banned

Can a football injury end a player's career?

The sad answer to this question is yes. In February 2018, the ex-Hull City and Tottenham midfielder, Ryan Mason, announced his retirement from football at the age of just 26. Mason hasn't played football since suffering a fractured skull while playing for Hull against Chelsea in January 2017. The incident occurred during an accidental clash of heads between Mason and Chelsea's Gary Cahill while they were challenging for a corner. It's a sad reminder that tackles can end a player's footballing career. These types of injuries are, thankfully, rare and medical improvements on and off the pitch have drastically improved a player's chances of recovering from a serious injury. Only a few years ago, it would take a player a season to recover from a broken leg, nowadays a player might be back on the pitch a few months later. The most dreaded of football injuries is a serious injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This injury used to end player's careers but now a player can be back on the pitch in just six months.

Arsenal's Jack Wilshere has suffered from lots of injuries in his career.

What are the most common football injuries?

Fortunately, we don't see many broken legs or ACL injuries on the pitch and when they do occur they no longer end a player's career. However, that doesn't mean injuries on the pitch are in decline. The most common injury in football is an injury to the hamstring and it has been said that these types of injury are increasing. The hamstring is not one muscle but a group of muscles that are behind your thigh (between your knee and your hip). A hamstring injury usually happens when a player sprints and the muscle stretches too far. This is called a pulled hamstring. When it happens on the pitch you might hear someone say 'his hamstring's gone' or 'he's done his hamstring' because it's usually obvious from the way the player stops what has happened. Most football injuries, unsurprisingly, involve the legs and feet, some of them include: sprained ankles (injuring the joint between your leg and foot), knee ligament injuries (ligaments are the soft tissue that connects bones to other bones), thigh strains (a strain is an injury cause by using a muscle too much or moving it in an unusual way), metatarsal fractures (breaking a bone in your foot), groin strains (your groin is where your legs join together) or calf muscle tears (your calf is the muscle at the back of your leg; between your ankle and your knee).

Muscle injuries are the most common type of injury on the football pitch.

Should tackling be banned?

The risk of injury in football is fairly high. You have to run fast, change direction quickly and avoid contact with other players. Many injuries, especially muscle injuries, happen with no contact from another player. However, many injuries, especially connected to injuries below the knee, occur because of a badly-timed tackle. Two-footed tackles have been banned and result in a red card, tackles from behind have also been outlawed and are usually given a yellow card. A defender also has to be very careful with a slide tackle as they are often seen as too aggressive by referees as the defender is not in control of the tackle. On average, there are probably fewer tackles in a game of football than ten years ago. Is this a good thing?

A very interesting lesson with a lot of key vocabulary. I really enjoyed it. I believe that any type of approach that could endanger the health of the opponent should be prohibited. I think that nowadays players try to avoid attacking if possible and that is good for football and of course for players.

I think so, but it will not be answered exactly; Of course, some should be prohibited to avoid damage to players.
Players can perform various activities which can help them avoid an injury, one of these is the warm-up that allows the muscles to begin to activate for the next exercise, and also the stretching that allows a greater disposition and flexibility of the body, All these processes are very important to achieve the desired objective. But you also have to have a good rest so that your body can cool down and present greater disposition in the following.

At the moment when the players enter the field they know that they will give everything to win and they know very well that they can suffer some injuries or blows during the match and what the players can do to avoid any injury is to be careful at the time of going for the ball and know how to look well all around.

1.If I think that dangerous faults should be sanctioned, since they can cause serious damage.
2. Of course, I think it can be avoided a bit, making talks with the groups inciting them to a fair game and in other ways, although in this sport it is somewhat difficult to avoid a brusque or soft contact
3. There are many tackles in the Premier League.
4. It is very good to warm up before a game, as the muscles are prepared to work and respond.
Very good questionnaire, How I like this!

1)Yes, I think some can be quite aggressive and "harmful" to the other person.
Do not prohibit, if not know how to use them correctly.
2)To avoid injuries they must avoid physical contact with other players, and be agile when it comes to owning the ball.
It is too important, as heating and stretching the muscles helps to obtain better performance on the court and to avoid some minor injuries, such as a cramp.

In many sports there are many tackles including the Premier League, I think that some forms of boarding should be banned as they can be dangerous.

1. It is very important to make warm up but always to increase the pressure since a good warm-up can prevent an injury.
2. It is very important to warm up as this activates the body but when finished it is good to cool down as this causes your body to return to a normal state because otherwise you can produce an injury

I think it will be better to take preventions and some rules to avoid injuries but the tackle will still be ther but some preventions will be used.
first just try not to be so agressive and second, yes I think it is the best thing they could do for avoiding injuries

Yes, there are many dangerous tackles in the Premier League and other soccer teams.

Obviously, the  tackling or some forms of tackling should be banned with educational courses to play the soccer, is more like to awaken the players.

The words in red were new for me but when I read the articles I realize that some of them I already read in books and watched in medical TV series.

It's impossible to completely get rid of tackles because it's simply a contact game. Only, I would add a new rule in football. If a player intentionally tackle another player in a brutal way and he's concious that he can cause him a serious injury then such a player should be banned as long as recovery of suffered player lasts. There have been a couple of incidents when commission gathered and a player was suspended only for 4-5 games, but in my opinion, such a punishement isn't enough.
One thing occured to me what can players do to prevent injuries. The coaches usually repeat not to keep ball to foot but pass quickly, one or two touches. Of course warming up and cooling down is very important to prevent muscle injuries.

A very intresting lesson with lots of  key vocabulary. I really enjoyed. I think any kind of tackling that can put the opponent's health under threat should be banned. I believe nowadays players try to avoid tackling if possible and that is good for the football and of course for the players.

In my opinion Premier League is aggressive League, and there are too many dangerous tackles.
To prevent injuries players have to warm up to decrease the possibility of muscles injuries
