Football English Blog: Do you want VAR?

Football English Blog: Do you want VAR?

In all of our Football English blogs, we look at a topical item of football news and ask you to do three things:

  1. Read the article and look at the words in red. Think about what these words mean.
  2. Do the quiz at the end of the article. This quiz checks your understanding of the football English in the article.
  3. Answer the questions and give your opinion in the comments section.

This is our latest Football English Blog and this week we're talking about whether VAR technology is a good thing for football or not.

Technology and Football

This is not the first time that technology has been brought into the game of football. Innovations over the last 50 years include better quality footballs, goalkeeping gloves and football boots. But, it's the decision to introduce electronic technology into the game that has been most controversial. Following a number of errors that resulted in goals not being given, as assistant referees hadn't seen the ball cross the line, football associations decided to investigate the use of goal-line technology that was being used successfully in other sports such as tennis. In 2013, it was introduced in the Premier League. The 2014 World Cup was the first time goal-line technology was used on the world stage. Its use has been a success and the system of sending an immediate message to the referee's watch that a goal has been scored is seen by most as fast and fair.

Goal-line technlogy has been used in the Premier League since 2013.

What is VAR?

VAR is one step further than goal-line technology. It stands for Video Assistant Referee and is a system of video technology that allows difficult decisions to be looked at again on a screen; either by the match referee or a team of experts in a control room, who are in contact with the referee on the pitch. Unlike goal-line technology, which looks at one thing related to the game, VAR looks at four match-changing events. These are:

  1. Goals and the build-up to the goal
  2. Penalty decisions
  3. Red cards
  4. Mistaken identity

The referee can either ask for help from VAR or the VAR team can notify the referee if a clear mistake has been made. The referee will then go to the touchline to look at a replay of the incident and make a decision.

What is the referee signalling? You might see this much more next season!

Why is VAR controversial?

People who want to see VAR used say that it will mean more correct decisions being made on the pitch. VAR could stop bad offside decisions being made and decrease diving and acts of simulation as players will know that these incidents will get looked at again. However, people who would prefer not to have VAR in the game say that it will slow the game down because we will have to wait for a decision to be made. Some pundits and commentators have also mentioned that some incidents are too subjective. They say that VAR may not be able to help with penalty decisions as people often disagree about when a penalty should be given or not.

Do we need VAR in the Premier League?

Watch this video (with subtitles) and let us know what you think about the decisions made in the recent Liverpool - Spurs match.

1)The var must be used so that the arbitrator, after seeing nothing, checks the taxation in the case of a foul or a penalty.

3)I didn't understand the words of red

1 in my personal opinion I have to ideas, agree because it helps to clarify clue actions during the match, but in other hand it reduce the human fact as the error that make the match something for entertainment.

2 Advantage: Most of the clue actions are solving quickly.

Disadvantage: the match lost valuable time.

3 no at it all, but the context clarify the ideas.

Yes, u agree VAR, can be as help, but it has got to yhe stage where it m as kes you wonder who is refereeing a game, the m as n on the field, of someone in a TV studio. It is too intrusive, every little incident being looked at, countless replays of offsides, which are then decided on imaginary lines drawn on the screen, it is no good for the game and needs to be abandoned as an idea too far!

Yes, VAR should be used in the Premier League. There are areas where a referee may not be able to see like when a player is attacked by an opposition player away from where the ball is.A video replay is necessary. The case of 'hand of God' needed VAR to disallow it.

While VAR is fast and efficient, small teams are not happy with VAR.These teams allege VAR ignores some bad actions committed by big teams. There are many reports in LaLiga, Serie A ,and the recent FIFA World Cup where VAR appears to have been abused.

1. I think VAR is really necessary for this kind of places because sometimes is difficult to know what really happened.

2. I believe that VAR brings more advantages than disadvantages because it is extra help for the referee.

3. Some of them were known for me.

I think VAR will be used in the Premier League.
With the VAR the referee can verify his decision making.
I only understand some terms in red.

1. I believe that the VAR should be used in the Premier League as this would help to correct some supposed missing that are unnecessary.
2. I believe that the VAR as a disadvantage is that it should use more and as an advantage it helps to correct errors.
3. Of course I understand English soccer in red because this helps us strengthen our vucabularity thanks to those people who make this possible

I think VAR should be used in the Premier League.
Some decisions is going to be more precise.I think that will incrase quality of game.Today football is full of diving and acts of simulation, and I don t like that.American footbal is nice example of using technology, and other sports to.Today games bring very fast action and there is always a space for human mistake.I know that some people would say technology could wipe out traditional football game.

I think it's a valuable idea to use technology as a means of helping referee during the match.
One of the major plus points of using VAR as I understood, it the precise in the information given to referee before he makes any decision.
On the other side of an argument using this new technology could slow down the match, which can make the match a little boring.
Yes, I could understand most of the words in red.

Football has become very fast and the referee physically simply does not have time. Of course, I'm for video replay.
So referees do not abuse it, I would give the initiative to the teams. Let the coach and/or the captain themselves address with a requirement to review the video replay in a controversial episode. And the number of such requirements should be limited. Let's say three times per game.
VAR is not a miracle cure: controversial situations will still rise, but such measures will help make football fairer.
For example, the above game Liverpool VS Spurs. In my opinion, in the first case with a penalty, and in in the second - OFFSIDE. And there is no difference whether van Dijk touch or not, the linesman slept his main job...

I support the use of VAR. I hope in the nearest future technologies will allow referees to look at a replay of the incident on their watch by holograms or on smart glasses, so it won't take much time from a match. However, VAR won't solve controversial situations as the referee's decisions are subjective. Nevertheless, VAR should be used because opinions always differ and the match-changing events should be reviewed

The drawback of using VAR is that many pundits and commentators can crucify referee without looking at them as a human being that make mistakes.

I thank that eventually all major football leagues and tournaments will be using VAR. VAR is already used in Germany, Italy and some other leagues, also it had been already used in FA Cup. So Premier League will have no other choice but to introduce it as well, if it want to be competitive.
But as any newly introduced technology VAR has some problems. The main are: some decisions seem to be controversial even after the review and fans want to have swiftly-made decisions. The later problem could be dissolved by using only video operation room with reserve referee who could review the episode there. It will take less time than to wait for the referee to go to the touchline to look at a replay.

I agree that more technology will have to be introduced, but I don't want the referee to have to run over to check a screen for every controversial decision. If there were a panel of referees off pitch that the referee could appeal to and get immediate feedback, that would be good. Especially if something happens that the referee totally misses. But what actually happens on the pitch has to be up to the referee.
