West Ham United
West Ham United
2016/17 was a big season in the history of West Ham Utd Football Club. That season was the first in their new home - the London Stadium, or more commonly known as the Olympic Stadium, in Stratford, London. West Ham United was founded in 1895 and had played their home games at the Boleyn Ground, which is more commonly called Upton Park, since 1904. The new stadium, which is about 5km from their old home, has a capacity of 62,500.
West Ham's current manager is David Moyes. West Ham has two nicknames, 'The Irons' and 'The Hammers', both of these names are related to their original name which was 'Thames Ironworks FC'. On the club badge, you can see two hammers, which relate to the club's industrial past.
Factsheet
- Stadium: London Stadium
- Stadium Capacity: 62,500
- Location: East London
- Founded: 1895
- Nickname: The Irons or The Hammers
- Manager: David Moyes
- Kit: Claret shirts with blue sleeves, claret shorts and claret and blue striped socks
West Ham play in claret shirts with blue sleeves, white shorts, and claret socks. West Ham's colours are the same as Aston Villa's because in 1899, Bill Dove, the father of a West Ham United player, went to a fair in Birmingham. Bill Dove was a professional sprinter and was challenged to a race by four Aston Villa players. The Aston Villa players made a bet that they could beat Bill Dove, but in the end, they all lost and didn’t have the money to pay. The Aston Villa players gave Bill Dove a complete team’s football kits instead of payment and Bill gave these kits to his son.
West Ham have played in the Premier League for a total of 25 seasons, they have been relegated twice, in 2002-03 and 2010-11, and promoted to the Premier League three times, in 1993, 2005 and 2012. The highest West Ham have ever finished in the Premier League was 5th place in 1998-1999 but they did finish 3rd in the league in 1985-86, which was their highest ever finish in the top division. West Ham have won four major trophies in their history; they won the FA Cup in 1964, 1975 and 1980 and they won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1965, beating 1860 Munich in the final. That winning team included Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, who would also win the World Cup with England the following year.
"Bobby Moore was my friend as well as the greatest defender I ever played against." - Pelé
Key player: Michail Antonio
Did you know......?
In 1965, West Ham became only the second English team to win a European trophy, after Tottenham Hotspur (1963).

I'm not a West Ham fan but I must admit that the atmosphere on the Upton Park is absolutely unique when they start singing and the bubbles fly in the air..

'I'm forever blowing bubbles' is the song you hear when the players get on the pitch on Upton Park. Together with L'pool's 'Never walk alone' probably most recognizable songs. Such a great club, such passion hardly you can see in some other country. Magic lives in England for sure.. Bubbles everywhere...

Hi Rema and all Hammers! Personal congratulations to you on winning last season's Premier Skills competition.
We should all be proud of the team's performance so far, but I don't think West Ham can keep up with the big ones in the long run. I hope to be wrong, though.
I saw that the Rugby World Cup 3rd/4th place match was played at the Olympic Stadium, and it had 'Newham' as a name. All this Oldham/Newham/East Ham/West Ham is a bit confusing...

Hi 1 teacher- Thank you for the congratulations :) As you say we could be proud of the team's performance so far and we are already defeat four giants. Last week we were defeated at Vicarage Road and this was our first defeat after seven games. Ighalo was ruined us on that day with two goals. I hope that your prediction will not come true. You had that luck that you have been on the Boleyn Ground and also on the Olympic Stadium. Can you say us something about Olympic Stadium and about atmosphere on the Boleyn Ground (I found in one of yours previous comment that you say that's Boleyn Ground is uncomfortable dangerous matchbox). Cheers ;)

Hi Rema! I haven't actually been to the Olympic Stadium yet. I just saw that a Rugby World Cup match took place there. However, once the Hammers have made the move, I'll start looking for a convenient event to watch live (and I hope my dad will be still willing to go with me).
Maybe it was a bit unkind of me to use those terms to refer to the Boleyn Ground, but it really is old and uncomfortable. It's the same with Chelsea's Stamford Bridge. I once went there to watch FC Barcelona and we got stuck for hours at the turnstiles.
It feels that these old stadiums could be dangerous in an emergency situation, but then, what do I know?
To be honest, the atmosphere in Upton Park at the game I attended wasn't as impressive as I had expected. They played "I'm forever blowing bubbles" at the start of the second half too, but hardly anybody sang along then. The Arsenal fans cheered and shouted more than the home crowd. There was the odd "Come on you irons" chant when the Hammers were trying to equalize. However, the fighting spirit on the pitch was there all the 95+ minutes of the game.

Hi Rema,
No, at the moment honestly I can't! Barcelona play otherworldly football right now. Last Saturday they crushed Real Madrid with an insulting ease. Just watch the game if you can get hold of it. It's a masterclass of how to play footie..
I would love Barcelona playing a Champions League final against anybody we hate (Real Madrid, any team coached by Mourinho...) at the London Olympic Stadium. Not against West Ham, though, as in that case I wouldn't know who to support.

When Alex Song shoots, there are two West Ham players off side. One of them (Sakho) spreads his legs to let the ball go through. He doesn't touch it but the referee considers that he is in the goalkeeper's line of sight (which is clearly not true when you see it). Most of the times the goal would have been conceded. On the other hand, the first time an Arsenal player falls in the area it's a penalty!
I think they are doing a great season when you consider the squad they have. Adrian is in impressive form, saving pretty much everything which is thrown at him, Carroll does a fantastic job as an attacking reference and the whole team shows a lot of determination. They had equalizing chances up to the very last second.

Just back from London after an undeserved 1-2 loss to Arsenal. A draw would have been a fair result, but the referee seemed to be pushing for the stronger team all the time. Great game though!
No wonder West Ham are leaving the Boleyn Ground. It's an uncomfortable dangerous matchbox.

Hi Dienekes92,
I just saw "Green Street". I didn't know it even existed, but I got hold of it because of your comment. I loved the language and the depiction of the (East) London atmosphere, but there's too much violence in it for me (and obviously for my students). It's a pity I can't show it in the classroom (maybe some bits), but I liked it anyway. Thank you!

Actually my dad says I might have chosen a worse opponent, so we could have a better chance to see them win! However, I thought it was the best option because it's in the Christmas holidays (so I dont' have to take any days off work) and it's also a London derby.

I am a West Ham fan because of my dad. I was born in 1966, the year England won the World Cup. Three of their best players (Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters) played for West Ham, so my father became a fan of that team, even though he has never been to London and doesn't speak any English at all!
He is an Espanyol fan at home, and I think both teams share a very strong local spirit and the underdog quality, usually struggling to avoid relegation but always ready to fight and give the big teams a bad day.
Curiously enough, the only West Ham game I have ever seen live (with my dad, of course) was last summer's City of Barcelona trophy in which they beat RCD Espanyol 0-1. It was a rather dull pre-season event, but I was positively surprised by some of Ravel Morrison's skills. He was the most talented player on the pitch.
I am very bad at predicitons, so I don't know whether they will have a more peaceful season next year. What I do know is that I'll try to bring my father to see a match at the Boleyn Ground before they make the move to the Olympic Stadium.
