Football Shout-out: After the match

Football Shout-out: After the match

Welcome to Football Shout-out from Premier Skills English, where we talk about the language you need when watching a match. Whether you are a super fan or an armchair supporter you won't be able to avoid football on TV this summer. In Football Shout-out, Jack and Rich present useful language to shout at the TV screen when watching a match with or without friends! In this episode, they look at some words and phrases that fans use after a match. Do you know what 'hanging on' means?

Transcript

If the listening was difficult, you can read the transcript and listen at the same time.

Jack: Hello and welcome to Premier Skills English - Football Shout-out

Rich: Football shoutout is the series that teaches you the language you need when you’re watching the game.

Jack: Hi everybody my name’s Jack

Rich: and my name’s Rich and welcome to our latest Football Shout-out where we talk about the English you need when you’re watching football.

Jack: If you listened to our last lesson, you will remember this:

Jack: Another long throw coming up. They’re just going to launch it again.

Rich: It’s all they do. That’s it. Get it out! Clear it!

Jack: Nice. Down the line. Pass it. Go on go past him.

Rich: Corner.

Jack: Get it swung in. Ahh! They’ve played it short again. Pass it. That’s it. Penalty!!

Rich: Outside the box. Free-kick.

Jack: We never score free kicks come on. He’s never going to get it over the wall.

Rich: Top corner this. You watch. Crossbar! How unlucky!

Jack: Penalty! Handball!

Rich: Which way is going to put it?

Jack: Down the middle, I reckon.

Rich: Goal. He got a hand to it but he was never going to stop that one.

Rich: Our last lesson was all about what we shout when your team has a set piece like a corner or free-kick. If you haven’t heard the lesson, there is a link on the side of this page for you to go back and listen and learn lots of phrases and words we use in these situations.

Jack: This lesson is all about what fans say after a match. Listen to this:

Rich: What a game!

Jack: I’m exhausted and I only watched it on TV!

Rich: I think we got away with it, to be honest.

Jack: No way! We were much the better team.

Rich: Yeah, but I couldn’t believe it when they missed their second penalty.

Jack: OK, I suppose we were hanging on a bit at the end but the referee had a stinker. Neither of them should have been penalties.

Rich: Hanging on? They were camped in our half for the whole second half.

Jack: Some great last-ditch defending though. It was all hands on deck at some points.

Rich: The keeper has to be my man of the match. He pulled off three or four worldies!

Jack: So, who do you think we’ll get next?

Rich: Could be Brazil? I think we can beat them too!

Jack: In the conversation, we were talking after our team had played. The situation was that we had won the game.

Rich: That’s definitely better because when my team lose, I don’t speak for about 24 hours!

Jack: So, our conversation was definitely more useful if you want to learn a few football phrases!

Rich: I thought that we’d been lucky to win the match. I said; ‘I think we got away with it’. This is used to say that we were lucky and that we might not have deserved to win.

Jack: But I thought we deserved to win, so I said; ‘we were much the better team’.

Rich: You changed your mind though, and used the phrase ‘hanging on at the end’. This is an expression to say your team was under a lot of pressure at the end of the match.

Jack: You might also want to talk about the players, referees and managers and whether they had good games or not.

Rich: Jack said that ‘the referee had a stinker’, which means a very bad performance.

Jack: And Rich said, ‘the goalkeeper was man of the match’ which means he was the best player on the pitch. You can also say that it was a man of the match performance.

Rich: I said that the goalkeeper pulled off three or four worldies. This is a really difficult sentence to understand.

Jack: To pull something off means to make or achieve something and a worldie is something amazing. So, it means the goalkeeper made three or four amazing saves.

Rich: I don’t think worldie is even in the dictionary yet, but it will be soon!

Jack: Another couple of idioms that we used in the conversation were connected to defending. They were last-ditch defending which is similar to last moment and all hands on deck which means everybody needs to help urgently in a situation.

Rich: Oh and nobody was camping on the football pitch in our conversation. When you say a team is camped in a half it means they are there for a long time and aren’t moving.

Jack: We’ll look at these phrases and a few more in the lesson which you can find below this podcast.

Rich: Listen again. Do you understand everything now?

Jack: So, there are a few expressions you can use after the match.

Rich: We’ve got some activities to help you remember the phrases that we’ve been speaking about in the lesson below this podcast.

Jack: This was our final football shout-out lesson in this series, we hope it helped you learn some new football phrases.

Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

Language

After a match

In this lesson, Jack and Rich used lots of phrases that we use after a match. The phrases can be divided into sections depending on how you feel your team played:

  • your team deserved to win and won
  • your team deserved to win but lost
  • your team were lucky or fortunate to win

Look at following three sentences and match them to the three options above.

We were hanging on a bit at the end and got away with it when they hit the post.

We were the much better team. It could have been six!

I can't believe we lost that. They only had one chance in the entire game!

In the first sentence, the team is lucky to win. In the second sentence, the team wins deservedly and in the third sentence the team deserved to win but lost.

Can you think of any other phrases you might use in these three situations?

Luis Suarez and Cristiano Ronaldo shaking hands after Uruguay beat Portugal.

A Lucky Win

The team that wins isn't always the team that deserves to win. There are many examples of teams who are fortunate to win. This often happens when teams defend a lot and then score on the counter-attack, or when an opponent misses lots of easy chances. In the podcast, Jack and Rich used the following phrases:

I think we got away with it, to be honest.

I suppose we were hanging on a bit at the end.

The phrase 'to get away with something' means to do something wrong and not be punished for it. In a sporting context, this means to make mistakes or not play well and still win, in other words - to be lucky. The phrase 'hanging on' means to be under a lot of pressure from the other team but still winning. This usually happens at the end of a match when the other team needs to score.

A Deserved Win

The team that plays well and takes their chances deserves to win and this is what usually happens. Here are some example phrases to use if your team has won easily:

We were the much better team.

We could have scored six!

We absolutely battered them.

These phrases are used to say that your team won (or should have won) easily. The final phrase 'we absolutely battered them' is quite strong and it means that we beat the other team very easily.

Do you know any other phrases you could use to describe a deserved or lucky win?

Samuel Umtiti and Lionel Messi shaking hands after France beat Argentina.

Task

World Cup Match

We would like you to tell us about a World Cup match that you have watched and tell us your opinions about:

  1. the result (did the teams deserve to win or lose; was one of the teams lucky)
  2. the players (who played well/badly, who was man of the match)
  3. the referee (did he have a good game; were there any difficult decisions)

Write your answers in the comments section at the bottom of the page. Try to use some of the language that we used in this podcast.

The answers to the quiz below are all words that Rich and Jack used in the roleplay. Can you remember what they said?

I watched the game Japan vs Belgium, I think it was an amazing match because the game had a lot of emotions, firts no one couldn't imagine that Japan was going ahead on the score, although they were lucky because Belgium was attacking and attacking, but Japan scored two times in good counter-attacks. However I think Belgium deserved to win that game and the man of the match for me was Eden Hazard and about the referee I think he didn't have any problem the teams played a fair game.

England didn't deserve to lose against Croatia. Raheem Sterling has been doing very well as a forward either in his right side or in the middle of the attack and sometimes in the left also. It is a pity the manager had not thought to replace the captain by Vardy at the half time. Luckily for the Croatian Perisic had succeeded in the second half in his shots and crosses. The referee would have been better if he had booked the Croate defenders who made some faults when struggling to stop Sterling.

Thanks for your support, Elghoul! We agree with you although Croatia were the better team after half-time.

All these phrases were new to me.
I do not know any other phrase since I'm starting to learn everything about the world of football

I watched the match of Uruguay vs Portugal.
I think Uruguay had a little bit of luck because winning against Portugal is not anything, although Uruguay deserved to win, as they showed their effort.
All the players played well, except Cristiano Ronaldo (he was a disappointment) and the man of the game was Cavani, the two goals that were made were "helegance"
I do not think there was any difficult decision for the referee, everything was fine

I watched Argentina vs Nigeria match.
I think Argentina was lucky to win even though they played much better than in its first two games. They had appeared!
The man of the match was the defender Marcos Rojo who scored an amazing goal and became a hero for Argentina as we were on the verge of elimination.
It was a thrilling game like always, they were playing with passion.
I felt sorry for Nigeria because they had played very well throughout the tournament but I felt happy for Argentina, I can't explain the feelings that I felt when they won.
By the way the referee had a good game.
