This is our latest Football English Blog and this week we're talking about whether cup competitions are important for Premier League clubs.
Are Premier League teams up for the cup?
This week sees Premier League teams in action in the FA Cup and European competition. For the first time, five Premier League clubs have made it to the knockout stages of the Champions League and Arsenal have advanced to the final 32 of the Europa League. This weekend sees the fifth round of the FA Cup and ten Premier League clubs are still in contention to win the oldest football competition in the world. But, how interested are Premier League clubs in these competitions? In the previous two rounds of the FA Cup, Premier League teams have often selected weakened teams and this has resulted in ten Premier League teams being knocked out of the competition; often by underdogs from the second, third or even fourth tier of English football. Why is this happening?
Are Premier League teams playing too many games?
One argument that is often given for teams playing reserve players in cup competitions is fixture congestion. For example, Chelsea had to play nine matches in January while teams that had been knocked out in earlier rounds of cup competitions only had to play five or six. In the FA Cup, against Norwich City, Chelsea made nine changes to their starting line-up from the previous match. This resulted in a replay and an additional match to Chelsea's already busy schedule. In the two-legged League Cup semi-final, which Chelsea played against Arsenal before and after the Norwich match, they fielded a full-strength line-up. It seems that Premier League teams will run the risk of getting knocked out by underdogs in the early rounds of competitions but if they have a chance of winning the competition they will play their full-strength Premier League team.
Is Premier League survival more important than winning a trophy?
This is an argument that is often given for Premier League teams not taking the FA Cup seriously but the reality is that only four teams (Stoke City, West Ham, Bournemouth and Arsenal) have been knocked out by a team from a lower division in this season's competition. It is true that Premier League survival has become more important over the years, but, in recent years, teams that have reached the FA Cup Final have included: Crystal Palace, Hull City, Stoke City, Aston Villa and Portsmouth. All of these teams were in the bottom half of the Premier League and none of them were relegated. However, all Premier League teams want to avoid what happened to Wigan Atheltic in the 2012/13 season. Wigan famously beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup but they were relegated just three days later and are currently playing in the third tier of English football. On a happier note, Wigan have been this season's giant killers beating Bournemouth in the third round and West Ham in the fourth round of this season's FA Cup. They have a chance to re-create their shock FA Cup win when they play Manchester City in the fifth round later this week.

1. I am not very fond of football, I consider that both are very important, the Premier League because it is the highest category of soccer and cup as it is worldwide where countries compete to leave their country up.
2. Yes, I would say yes, I would recommend that they calm down a bit, that they have the mentality of winners, that for a moment they forget the game because I am also an athlete and I know how those nerves feel, try the same as in the game have fun and have fun.

1. In my opinion I guess that depends on the teams because the teams in the league or the lower try to measure themselves against the big ones in the Premier League and both will fight to win the cup, so I think the cup is more important the participants and competitiveness

•I really do not know if it is more or less important than others because as I said before I am not a big fan but I know it is very important and that fans love to follow every game that is played and analyze the statistics of each team.
•I do not believe in fideldad that they play too many since there are too many fans that also love to really follow the teams and everything they do and this in turn entertains them and makes them happy.
•I think what I like the most is the excitement and euphoria that are seen and felt during each game and more when it is a match of the team of preference of each one, these reactions are much greater.

I think it's good that Premier League teams play many matches because level of football increases and Premier League is one of the best football league in Europe/ World. Players are always prepare to play on the highest level. From my point of view, instead of making fixture congestion easy , football clubs should extend their squads. They should put more young players from academies into their teams.
In cup matches, I like that even football teams from a low tier of football can compete with those from higher one successfully.
Question number 3 in the quiz. There should be "of" before "the FA Cup by Wigan" I think.

But if to choose between the Champions League, PL and FA Cup, unfortunately, I think most PL managers will give a priority to the Champions League and after to PL. in this regard, I would suggest the following changes. The winner of FA Cup gets an opportunity to get into the Champions League coming in the confrontation with the 4th team of PL. And the winner of this confrontation comes to the final qualifying round of Champions League. The other losing team comes to the last qualifying round of the Europa League or comes in confrontation for a ticket to the Europa League with the 6th team of PL (it’s another one dilemma for me:) I think it’s a good motivation as for big clubs, as for small. Especially for small.

If the player for some reason doesn’t play in the main team, FA Cup is a great chance to change it. And it’s a door to the main team for young players. I think that now it’s all about money. Due to its TV contract Premier League is offering to teams a chance to earn more money than any other tournament in the world (even a Champions League cannot be competitive in respect of money). So any team which plays in Premier League (and even teams from Championship which are in promotion race at the moment) is going to conserve its strength for Premier League.
The only exception is Manchester City. Because of the huge advantage they have in the Premier League, their away 4-0 victory over Basel in Champions League and due to the fact that they will play their next Premier League fixture only in March, MC now could concentrate on 5th round of FA Cup and FL Cup Final against Arsenal. It’s a huge chance for them to make a triple on the domestic stage and a grate chance to make an incredible quadruple if the could win all four competitions they are playing this season (Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and FL Cup).
