English Out There

English Out There is the world’s first English course specially designed to work with social media and free internet telephony. In 2011, the European Commission funded website elearningeuropa.info named it one of the top ten uses of social media for formal language learning in the EU after listening to a case study in which a Chinese adult learner went from a beginner to intermediate speaker in just six lessons.

The content consists of a suite of English language teaching and learning materials in simple file formats (PDF and MP3) that support focused real speaking and listening practice in every lesson. 250,000 hours of teaching and testing has created a unique global English course that can be used in any ELT environment and combines psycholinguistics with tasks with social learning.

  • Teach in class or online using worksheets (Input)
  • Teachers and students go out into the real world (English speaking countries) or students keep worksheets and go online for homework.
  • Students speak to people in the real world or their online practice partners sourced via sites like Facebook.com, Italki.com or Skype (Activity).
  • Students reflect upon their experiences with their teacher and their peers in various ways (Result)

Exam English

Teachers will find interactive practice tests for the most important international English exams:

  • IELTS
  • Cambridge English Main Suite: KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE
  • Cambridge Business exams: BULATS, BEC
  • Cambridge Michigan ECCE, ECPE
  • Pearson PTE Academic, General

Vocabulary tests are available based on the academic word list as well as by topic from the Cambridge PET word list. Grammar explanations and practice material is linked to CEFR levels according to the British Council/EQUALS Core Inventory.

An adaptive level test helps learners to select study materials at an appropriate level.

Learners with handheld devices can access the mobile version of the web site as well as download a suite of mobile apps.

Language Lab

Where can students play paintball, learn how to read and play music, visit a gallery and then drive away in the car that they have hired with their teacher and classmates while speaking English at the same time? Well they can do that if they travel to an English speaking country or they can ‘travel’ to English City and do it online in a realistic and interactive environment.

Students use avatars (characters) to talk to other students and teachers in the city and do things you can in a city like London; buy a cup of coffee, go shopping or have a meal with friends. English teachers and actors play the parts of a café owner, an estate agent, a banker etc so the students know who to visit where for the type of language input they need.

Languagelab arranges regular tours and introductions for teachers and researchers who are interested in getting more involved in immersive 3-D environments for teaching. Instructions on getting there can be found on their website.
