Phase 1: Tests

We are looking for any materials relating to the following test instruments:

Traditional Approaches to Language Testing (1941 – 1959)    

  • 1954 Knowledge of English Form for screening applicants for UK Universities
  • 1958 OSI 210 Assessment of Competence in English Form     

Psychometric-structuralist Approaches to Language Testing (1960s)

  • 1965 English Proficiency Test Battery (EPTB)

Communicative Approaches to Language Testing (1970s >)

  • 1980 ELTS Test
  • 1989 IELTS Test

We would be grateful for the temporary loan/donation of any of the following materials that might shed light on the above instruments:

  • Copies of the tests, accompanying instructions, mark schemes, preparation materials, reports (details of tests/number of candidates/where taken 1954-2013), etc.
  • Personal narratives on the construction/use/effects of these instruments
  • References  to/copies of  primary or secondary sources that  provide  information on any of these tests
  • Photographs/biographical details of any of the people involved with these tests, people taking the tests
  • Contact emails/telephone  numbers of any of the people involved with these tests who would be happy to be interviewed
  • PhDs on any of these tests (Either copies of PhD theses or information related to such theses, including any or all of the following: author, year of award, institution, title, topic).

Please note the British Council will cover postage and/or copying expenses.

In addition we would very much like to hear from anyone connected with the UCLES-British Council Joint Committee 1941-93, which was responsible for overseeing Cambridge Exams, or the UCLES Executive Committee for the Syndicate's examinations in English for foreign students from 1957.

Phase 2: Projects

We are looking for any materials relating to projects on English Language Assessment, particularly any project reports or evaluations. We currently are aware of the following projects:
