1-3 October 2012 – Cartagena, Colombia
The first in a series of high-level policy dialogue events in the Americas. The series, provisionally called the British Council English Conferences, is designed to provoke discussion about the opportunities, challenges and choices facing policy makers and educators in the area of English language teaching across the Americas, principally in Latin America.

Assessing and evaluating English language teacher education, teaching and learning: Second international conference for English language teacher educators

March 3-5 2012 – Hyderabad, India
Local and international delegates focused on the theme of Assessment and Evaluation of English Language Teacher Education, Teaching and Learning.  The theme was designed to focus attention on the importance of setting, achieving and maintaining standards which lead to better quality and more accountability, not just at the practitioner, but also at the programme levels. The conference aimed to address key questions on how to improve assessment and evaluation.

Learning English in Primary Schools – what do our children and teachers really need?

March 2  2012 - Beirut, Lebanon
82 head teachers, English coordinators, supervisors, inspectors, and Ministry of Education representatives from Lebanon and delegates from Jordan and Egypt attended a seminar to discuss findings of global and local British Council research about teaching English to children.  The aim was to support the Ministry’s Education Sector Development Plan to improve the overall quality of education, including the teaching of English. Speakers included UK and European university researchers from British Council projects.

Managing Change in English Language Teaching

March 2012 - Ankara, Turkey
16 Heads of ELT Departments and Schools of Foreign Languages from state universities in Turkey attended an event to discuss the reform of English language teaching and learning  in Turkish higher education institutions. Three contributors to the new British Council publication “Managing Change in ELT” led the discussions, and the event acted as a launch for the publication.

Language & Development Discussion Series

Monthly from January 2012 - Kathmandhu, Nepal
Policy-makers and educators meet to discuss opportunities, challenges and choices in the field of ELT in Nepal. The role of languages, including English, as a force for positive social transformation are explored. The discussion series will generate policy guidance documents which contribute to language-in-education policies and practices in the country.
