Focus

Web-based language development for Brazilian state sector teachers of English.

The project

The British Council Brazil has developed a highly successful 100 hour web-based English Language Development course, called English Teachers' Portfolio (ETP). It is aimed primarily at Brazilian state school teachers of English who need to develop their language and methodological skills. Progress is measured against external benchmarks: the Common European Framework for languages, and the Cambridge ESOL Teaching Knowledge Test.

The web-based course, written by 3 leading British authors, focuses on improving speaking skills and vocabulary.

The ETP is divided into 20 units of 5 lessons each, totalling 100 hours of self-study. Teachers are encouraged to form study groups with colleagues and identify a mentor, that is, a more experienced teacher or teacher-trainer, to support them through monthly or fortnightly face-to-face meetings, when teachers can show their portfolio of written work and oral production.

Since 2006, hundreds of teachers have embarked upon and completed ETP, and have been awarded the British Council's certificates of completion.

The course has been very well received by participating local education authorities. In some states the authorities have recognised and rewarded with extra payments the work of those teachers who act as study-group mentors, in recognition of their efforts in supporting professional development of English teachers.

The course represents a very cost-effective way of providing teachers with high quality development opportunities.

The course is hosted within the British Council Brazil's ELT Online Community.

What the stakeholders say

Participating teachers have said:

I'm a public secondary school teacher, and I've been studying the ETP units. I think this is a great initiative to help teachers like me who have little time and money to enrol in a course to brush up our English. The lessons are carefully planned and designed, and the audio files are of good quality.

Congratulations on all the brilliant work you've been doing recently on the British Council ELT Community website - the audio and video recordings are great!

Thank you very much. We try to do our best for public schools in Brazil but it is not so easy. I am almost gave up teaching English..., but we still keep going. It's very good to know that there are people around supporting us. Thank you very much!
