Focus

Enhancing the in-service and pre-service training of English Language teachers in Nigeria

The project

Upgrading the skills of English language teachers in Nigeria is one of the top priorities of the Federal Government. The British Council was ready and able to respond to this need.

A course designed for Africa by top UK professional course writers, the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course, formed the core of the project. The course focuses on the needs of trainers of English Language teachers. The British Council and the National Teachers' Institute (NTI) joined forces in promoting and piloting the CPD course in Nigeria.

CPD offers a one year certificate course for trainers of English Language teachers, accessed on computer through a CD - ROM. The course is split into three blocks, with five ten-hour modules in each block. The trainees do self-study and have study group meetings. A tutor is needed to supervise and mentor each group of 10 trainees in each state. These tutors were specially selected and trained for this task.

The CPD course was piloted in one state in 2005-06 and was then rolled out to cover 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory. In this way, 380 teacher trainers in Nigeria received training, 40 during the pilot and 340 at the roll out stage.

The project target is for about 2000 teachers to receive the training and the course certificate.

The project has been so successful that the status of the programme may be upgraded to Certificate in the Teaching of English as a Second Language.

What the stakeholders say

The CPD course has improved the teaching skills of the Nigerian English Language teacher so tremendously and this is reflecting already in the performance of students in the language.
