We are proud to bring you a series of webinars showcasing ideas from the 2015 ELTons winning innovations. Here we present the 2015 winner of the Eltons Award for Innovation in Learner Resources. Diana Lea, Editor of the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary of Academic English, will show how this award-winning Dictionary of Academic English can support learners who wish to use core academic vocabulary accurately and appropriately in their writing.

Theme: Learners’ dictionaries often mark words as ‘academic vocabulary’ but they rarely show them in use in an academic context. The Oxford Learner’s Dictionary of Academic English is based on an 85-million-word academic corpus, created especially for the purpose. In this webinar, Diana will show how the dictionary can support learners in reading academic texts, and help them use core academic vocabulary accurately and appropriately in their own writing. She will demonstrate some practical exercises that will help EAP students become familiar with the dictionary, focusing on topics such as collocation, word families and disciplinary differences in word meanings.
About the speaker
Diana Lea taught English in Czechoslovakia and Poland before joining Oxford University Press as a dictionary editor in 1994. She has worked on a number of dictionaries for learners of English, including the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary and the Oxford Collocations Dictionary. She is the editor of the Oxford Learner’s Thesaurus – a dictionary of synonyms and of the ELTon award-winning Oxford Learner’s Dictionary of Academic English.
