This report contains 25 detailed country and regional profiles, which focus on language policies and practices in the education sector, as well as in the media, public services and spaces, and business.
The report investigates current language policies and practices in EU partner countries, and how ‘language rich’ they are. The research explores a variety of language types: foreign languages, regional or minority languages, immigrant languages and national languages. For the latter, it looks particularly at the ways institutions support the learning of the national language for newcomers, an all-important factor in their ability to access both education and employment. The underlying objective of this investigation is to see how Europe can position itself successfully to do business with the world’s emerging economic powers in the 21st century.
