This paper addresses the learning and teaching of English, from the perspective of primary pupils in government schools in Egypt. It explores their aspirations for English and how/whether these are supported in the English language classroom. This paper will be of particular interest to teachers/policymakers who aim to give pupils a greater role in participating in English lessons, including having some control over what is taught and how. The pupils in this study, despite being ten years old, showed invaluable insights into the learning and teaching processes.
